Afrobeats isn't reggae and has a different role to play All that crying and begging for end of poverty and injustice where has that gotten black people? The problem with blacks is lack of unity and self love. All the years of artist like Buju yet look at whats going on in jamaica and the world. Afrobeats premotes love and unity between continental africans and the dicpora while making people proud of ther African roots thats powerful, people like you need to stop trying to downplay this fact. And i can tell people like you dont really listen to afrobeats or you would know the same artist you a criticizing also have uplifting and political content songs. Not every song of an artist has to be that type of song to make an impact. Lastly alot of people who listen to reggae music only listen for the vibe and rebellious nature don't apply the content to their everyday life.

Buju Banton's stand on this afrobeat genre is not totally what most guys here understand! He was asked what's the different between Reggae and Dancehall, he said that Dancehall is a sexualized and slang form of reggae, but reggae on the other side, is music made for the soul and are meant for enlightenment that brings about redemption.
Out of 100% we can't say 40% of today's afrobeat are made to reform or redeem Africans. Like Buju said, most of them talks about sex & money and the artiste don't care since they had the opportunity to make money and nothing else. Fela Kuti's way of Afrobeat is very different from today's Most Afrobeat and you know it. Buju is not hating or jealous of the progress of Afrobeat, what he is concerned about is how it is done, the impact on Africa Now. Those Artist are being controlled by the Uptowns and most of their song are being regulated and influenced by the outside world. Reggae would have done a massive change to our lives but the Powers dissolved it when it was evolving. [ From Ghana ]

What Buju is saying might come across as hating, but he has a valid point. As a Nigerian, I agree with him. The majority of today's African artists make great music, but they continue to trade the African identity for the washed up western values. Imagine African artists using the N-word in their songs and actually promoting it in Africa. Burna Boy wears fake grillz on his teeth and ignorantly acts more gangster than Americans. Flavour sings about nothing but money and women. Tekno wey dem born for Bauchi State is now claiming he's an American boy because he moved to the US yesterday. Wizkid never had an identity, and you can hardly tell where Diamond Platnumz belongs as there is nothing African about him with his second-class fashion sense.
There are so many conscious African artists, but they are pushed behind while those singing and promoting nyansh, champagne, and bla bla are headlining because that's what your oppressors want.

Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear, Culture, Fela, Hugh Masakela, Miriam Makeba, and many notable artists from the black community reached out to people through music THESE PEOPLE ACTUALLY FOUGHT AGAINST THE BIASED AND ONE-SIDED SYSTEM WITH MUSIC.
Buju acknowledges the massive talent in Africa, but he is disappointed that African artists are sadly and ignorantly caught up in material things, forgetting there is work to do in liberating the continent with their voices, especially now that they've got the world's attention. They are always inventing different dance moves, while others are advancing in the 21st century. SAD!

Buju needs to sit his behind down and stop hating. His first album was not about freedom, it was still about f**kery. All music cannot be used for freedom fight. He is just hating and masking it. What freedom is hip hop fighting for today? Or dancehall? Or rock? Or country music? Even the reggae today, is it not riddled with lyrics about gang violence and so on? I love his music but on this issue, he should take several seats behind. I've seen many jamaicans online hating on afrobeats, saying it has taken the shine off of reggae/dancehall. Every music has its season. Dancehall and reggae have been around for decades and have had multiple cycles of boom and lull. They should chill and wait for the next boom. In the meantime, appreciate afrobeats and stop hating.

And as someone who loves Reggae, Buju isn't an artist I like, nor do I hear alot of other Americans that live reggae talk about him. I honestly, think there might be some jealousy with his comments as he may feel he should be bigger that he really is. It’s absolute nonsense for another man to tell you what to use your music for.

@@musab2025 so wanting afican music to be more uplifting and have the same impact as reggae music is now disrespectful? Oh please.
      Stop being so sensitive.
Let me just say this, aftobeats is based on the jamaican style and culture, your own afrobeats artists even say how jamaican music has influenced them and their careers.
Whether you want to accept this or not, here are the facts, afrobeats is completely based off jamaican beats, style of singing, the rthymic pattern of flow pretty much everything in afrobeats has been taken from jamaican music. I have no problem with that whatsoever.
Ampiano is the same. Ampiano is based off black american house music. Anyone with any music knowledge know that ampiano has taken all of its foundation especially the drum patterns and style from black american house music. These arre facts.
My point is if afrobeats has taken so much from jamaican music and without jamaican music there would be no Burna, wizz kid, Davido, then Buju has every right to call out African music for not uplifting Afica because it has taken pretty much everything from Jamaica.
So Buju is saying, if you are going to take from the Jamaican culture which is fine, at least use the power you have taken to uplift the people the same way the early Jamaican artists used reggae music to uplift Africa.
Now to your last point. The reason why reggae has not uplifted Jamaica is because it has been stopped from uplifting Jamaica from the powers that be.
They know how powerful reggae music is that's why they deliberately promote all the current dancehall trash to keep the people from uplftment.
Remember how they murdered Bob Marley because his music was uplifting not only Jamaica, but Africa and the rest of the world.
They cannot allow that to happen again, and that's why they only promote this negative dancehall music that does nothing to uplift the people.
If Reggae music was left to flourish then it would have changed the entire world by now and Jamaica would be a totally different place.
You need to understand the length they will go to in order to stop another Bob Marley from reconnecting with the people. This is deep politics that is involved in the oppression of the Jamaican people.

You think Africa didn’t have music before Jamaica? Where did Jamaicans get their music from? Pluto? Where are the roots of Jamaican to begin with.
And don’t act like you don’t hear how Buju described African music.
You make excuse for current music coming out of Jamaica but why can’t Jamaicans make sure they push only the good music?
Is so dumb to go at African music when all the liberation music by Bob Marley still hasn’t liberated Jamaica.
To conclude, if you don’t know any uplifting African music, just say you don’t. Don’t generalize and call it f**kery because there are many song that connects with people on a spiritual level. They don’t even understand the language but they can feel it.

They r designed for chilling out and not really bruckin out .I am not formally trained musician so I cannot describe the difference in dancehall beat and afro beats but it is clear that thr dancehall hit way harder. And that sounds that drum is a reflection of the consciousness of the artist. Bounty killer did interview making similar points as buju. The last thing I want to say is that we cannot ignore the class character of dancehall vs afro beats scene. Dancehall has always been of and from the slums, the ghetto, the poor and working class - and so the dancehall clubs b composed of those people. Afro beats is generally for the middle class minded that don't want to b associated with that ghetto shit. Let's tell the truth! I just don't like people like this, and the one that made fun of the south sudan basketball team and also those that don't make an effort to actually learn about Africa. I guarantee most black Americans think Africa is a country. Those kynda people, I just don't like.

@@warrendoris9669 and just because you are a black foreigner doesn't mean you are my brother. A white guy living in my country contributing to the economy and lifestyle is more of a brother than some foreigner I don't know. But if you come to my country with good intentions, regardless of race, you are welcome

Buju Banton is a legend much love and respect to him and I heard you ask the question is he a liar no sir in these days it seems men deal with their feelings and create things in their mind somehow instead of dealing with the truth and the facts thank you
