The other cool thing is that the technique allows you get away from playing a different note for every pick stroke (like fiddlers or more modern mandolin approaches). At higher speeds this gives the line shape and it sounds less frenetic. The late Ingrid Hermann, daughter of the big bandleader Woody Hermann, told me that her dad heard Monroe and commented on this shaping aspect of Monroe's technique. Its cool in that he often leaves out notes a fiddler might play---kind of suggesting them and leaving the listener to put it together. My friend Ed Neff likens this to Monroe doing what the Impressionist painters did.
