  • For those of you who do not know, this format is one of my favorites, because it allows dancers to present a pithy snapshot of their choreography and performance skills. Let's see who I feel is the winner of this Strictly Lindy competition at Swim Out Costa Brava 2023!
Join my Street Smart Swing community and learn to mastery Lindy Hop with the simplest system on earth, gain access to all of my weekly classes, and receive my personal feedback on your dancing.

Anyone who has been around the Lindy Hop dance community for any period of time knows that the art is entirely governed by a relatively small number of universal principles.
What is less known is exactly what those principles are and how a student is supposed to learn them.
Traditionally, instructors expose their students to thousands of moves over several years with the expectation that, at some point, they will “figure out” what the principles are.
The problem is that most students “drown” in techniques for years, and never decipher the principles with any degree of significance and clarity.
Principle-based Learning will help you make sense of every technique you are exposed to past, present, and future.
You’ll waste less time in the frustration zone, and spend more time in the flow zone.
The content you will learn in the Street Smart Swing membership will help you learn instantly what it took me over 10,000 of dancing to figure out.

You nailed the analysis. To me, the third couple's second pass was the best pass, followed by the first couple's first pass.
An even though one of my teacher was competing, those two parts looked like the ones more in sync with the music.
Overall, the first couple had the most complete performance.

Hey Jamin I've got a question for you. Do you prefer Strictly or Jack n' Jill?
To me, I'm always leaning towards Jack n' Jill. Love the improvisation and how much more in sync to the music tends to be than Strictly.
In fact, whenever I have to show someone how fantastic Lindy could be, I always show them the same video:
Michael Seguin and Frida in LindyFest 2013 All Star Jack n' Jill.
This video represents everything that Lindy could be, Frida is laughing her butt off all the song, being constantly surprised but having all her moments and ideas, they're nailing every single part of the song and the all-stars simply amazed on the background makes it so much more fun.

Great question. Overall, I would say the J&J is for those who understand it's improvised. (Lindy Hop practitioners) Strictly is great for those who are not into Lindy Hop yet and who need a little more structured excitement. This is also like comparing artist like Eminem who primarily construct dense lyrical kung fu in songs, (Strictly) juxtaposed to Jay Z who is known for his ability to create entire songs by free-styling. (J&J) Simply put: Choreography or improvisation. For me it all boils down to what mood I'm in and how I want to be inspired.

@@streetsmartswing but the thing I don't like about strictly is that, being with live music, some people tend to adhere to a choreography even though it doesn't suit the music. I'd much rather have Advanced if I want to see structure.

Maybe it's my age, but I don't see the lauding of high speed Lindy - it often resembles thrashing and seems to deprive the dancers of an opportunity to be more expressive. You can't see as much synchronicity with the music either - catching riffs on individual instruments. It's definitely athletic, but rarely graceful.
