Remembering Beautiful Kapoho, Hawaii - June 2018

  • Every scene in this video is completely covered by lava, gone forever. Kapoho, Hawaii's stunning oceanic museum, my all-time favorite snorkeling place, is now a memory. 100's of lava pools were nurseries to every kind of sub-tropical Pacific fish and coral.
Sadly, in the first week of June 2018, the Kapoho Tide pools, Kapoho Vacationland, Kapoho Bay and the surrounding area, were buried by lava from the Leilani Estates Fissure Eruption. My heart goes-out to the home owners, all safely evacuated. I still can’t believe it’s gone. Kapoho was truly a magical place...
Autel X-Star Premium drone scenes were shot on Dec. 27 & 28th 2017, only four months prior to the eruption. Sony Action Cam underwater scenes shot in July & Aug. 2017.

Grew up on Oahu as a child. Went back to visit friends on the big island in the 80s after living on the mainland for many years. They took me here. Out of all the fond memories of the good times I had in the 808, the warm kapoho (keiki) pools are the standout highlight. Besides visiting friends on Oahu, getting back to those pools is one of the main reasons I would visit again. I told my kids about this place, & had planned to take them there & make Kapoho's magic as vital a part of their being, as it is mine. I witnessed Kilauea up close & personal when I was only 7, so I'm well aware of its devastating potential, & ultimately respect the awesome power of Pele's will. Kind of sucks knowing it no longer exists. So be it. Thnx for the audiovisual tribute. I'll be back

Your welcome. It was a labor of love. I tried to go twice a month, an hour’s drive each way from Hilo. It became a sanctuary we looked forward to visiting. I’ve been all over the pacific, nothing compared to the tide pools of Kapoho....

Me too. You simply wouldn’t recognize it today. It looks raw, rugged, almost foreboding - the innocence is gone…

It's been a while since you posted this but I think not too late for a comment. Your beautiful sequences bring back all the memories of our stays on WaiOpae in our friends' home there. We watched our videos recently, they are not as nice as yours are. Such a wonderful, magical place. Gone forever. Thank you for putting these out there, so appreciated.

Thanks much for the kind words, you’re very welcome. I actually made this video for myself, as therapy. I loved Kapoho so much, I was having an awful time dealing with it’s disappearance. I had lots of underwater video, but by dumb luck, I had flown my new drone over the area 3-4 times only months before the eruptions.
I had to somehow transfer that emotional connection into an experience I could share, this is the result. I’ve watched it 50+ times on a 65” TV, b/c it brings me right back. I didn’t add an intrusive soundtrack b/c I didn’t want anything to interfere with the sights and sounds of being there, being underwater. I guess others feel like we do, it’s by far the most popular video I’ve ever made!

Xxxmermaid Love - I know.... I’ve found it almost impossible to explain it to people who have never been there. Every time I went there it was magical. Kapoho took you away to another place, a peaceful place.... No place like it on earth...

Xxxmermaid Love Thanks so much. I make these video’s primarily, selfishly, for myself. For my memories. I’m part Hawaiian.
I figured if I was pleased/moved by them, maybe some folks who understand our perspective my enjoy them as well. When I promised a friend to make an hour-long video wallpaper for his cafe in Hilo, I never thought it would take so long. It was because if I couldn’t do justice to this magical place, I wouldn’t do it at all. After 2 years, I got about as close as I could get being a one-man-band. One drone, one Mac, LOL. This was not made to be watched in one sitting, but I find myself getting lost in it every time I watch it. I hope it brings some pleasure to you as well... Thank you for posting this. This was my favorite place to snorkel in the entire state.
It is good to see again some of my favorite corals, which I also recognize on the video. May they RIP.

Jason Jackson - thanks so much for the kind words. I miss it terribly, but a new area is being born. Issac Hale was spared, perhaps a new region is forming!

Mahalo for the kind words. I loved the Kapoho Tide Pools. I tried to go there once a week when in Hilo. I've snorkeled all over the Pacific, this was my favorite spot. It seemed to have every kind of coral possible for Hawaiian waters. Each pond was different. On calm days, you could swim out beyond the ponds in deeper water -- magical. I miss Kapoho terribly, so this was a labor of love...

@@HiloHawaiian, just out of curiousity, what did it look like beyond the pools? I'd imagine it was a dropoff - the surf zone was a typical reef crest, and then a deep drop off maybe like at the Cook Monument in Keleakekua Bay?

    • @HiloHawaiian
      @HiloHawaiian  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Jason Jackson Yes, there was a steep drop-off. On calm days, I snorkeled beyond the pools, since there were big coral heads out there, but it deepened quickly so I never went too far. Also, during the fierce rainstorm I briefly showed near the end of the video, there were strong currents that suddenly appeared out if nowhere. At one point, I hung-on to a coral head for dear life, in only 4’ of water. While it wasn’t truly life-threatening, it was scary as hell. I couldn’t out swim it, so I hung on with gloved hands and snorkel face-down in the water. After a few minutes, my arms getting tired, a sudden surge snapped the coral head off, and I tumbled backwards towards some lava boulders and jumped-out. I’ve never experienced rip currents that strong anywhere else - and in the most unlikely place!

Not too many people knew about the large coral head maze, but it was the best spot when the tide and conditions were right. Mahalo for sharing.
