Higher level students from the most distinguished professional dance academy in China supported with government funding. The girls are really lacking in details and artistic expression. They go through movements like robots with no communication to the audience. They are tall, slender and long limbed, yet there is no beauty and grace. Anyone will get bored and not seeing any beauty in the art of ballet aside from a series of jumps and turns. Boys abilities are extraordinary and better in energy than girls. Yet similarly, they lack many artistic details in the movement of head, arms and shoulder with the exception of a few. This is why you don’t see any Chinese ballet dancers, especially females on international stage. The understanding of the art is quite shallow and still rests upon the execution of technical aspects. Even so, most of the girls lack stability and control.
You are absolutely right. The teachers there teach ballet like a sport and artistry is never their primary concern. That's why the students are like robots doing programmed movements with no real understanding of the aesthetics behind it. Besides, I cannot see any joy in their performance. What a shame!
I beg to disagree. There's Yuan Yuan Tan with San Francisco Ballet and Xiao Nan Yu with National Ballet of Canada. Chun Wai Chan with Houston Ballet. Li Cunxin (Mao's Last Dancer) who danced with both Houston Ballet and Australian Ballet, and is now director of Queensland Ballet. To be fair these dancers do look a bit unpolished. I feel that the girls were somewhat sloppy. But at the time this was filmed I'm pretty sure they were still in training, so they have yet to bloom. They were pretty much diamonds in the rough waiting to be polished.
Can you give some examples of ballerinas paying attention to artistic details? My untrained eyes cannot tell the ‘robotic’ quality of their dancing. Is what you are talking about similiar to the case of Melanie from MBA who has been criticised for her lack of artistry and excessive pirouettes?
Good boys !!! Well done ! Nice leap !
