    I wonder why so many handlines were directed into the thermal column? Handlines don't have enough GPM's to absorb the heat, unlike a deck gun or elevated master stream. Put the water on the fuel at the base of the fire, not the heat column above the fuel. That much fire will convert the water to steam above the fire and it will never reach the actual burning fuel. Sure, steam conversion in a more confined fire can do wonders to knock down the fire, but aiming a handline into the thermal column is not effective. I see this in loads of fire videos and always wonder why they are not putting the water on the base of the flames where it will have a better chance of being effective.

    I do not know who made the decision to fight the fire, BUT as a Fire Chief as soon as I heard the first volley my instructions would be to back up and let it burn. Our duty then would be to save and protect surrounding structures. There is NO WAY I would let my crew keep moving forward knowing there was ammo in the house and it was going off

      The majority of ammo is unloaded and cooks off without lethal velocity. Chambered ammo can be lethal, but is much less common. As many gun owners as there are in the U.S., we've all fought fires involving ammo in the fire load. In all the commotion, you might not have even noticed.

      There is at least one video out there where multiple scenarios involving structures and tractor trailers loaded with ammo and the conclusion was that standard firefighter protective gear would prevent injuries from small arms ammo cooking off.

    Should they even be fighting that fire with ammo cooking off?

      Yes. The velocity is too low to penetrate firefighter gear.

    Though exploding live ammo can be dangerous, it is highly unlikely to be hit by exploding ammo from a fire unless you are close to it.

    That's not ammo cooking off. that's fireworks. ammo will make small pops. even large calibers.

    • @drwhoeric
      @drwhoeric ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, I pretty much agree, though I also heard ammo. Discharging ammo makes a "Crack" noise where the "Pops" are firecrackers or larger works.
