I've always thought that old logo of Boston's looks like he's sitting on the john instead of a thrown. The cards look nice and simple...Thanks Rod, another great vid.

Hi Mike. I just examined this logo again. An old guy/leprechaun smoking a small pipe with a scepter-like cane in his left fist. Oh yeah, and a shamrock vest and gold crown with "NBA" on it. It is a puzzling emblem, isn't it? Who decided that was a good design, lol? And it was that way in Boston from 1950-1968! "1000logos.net" has this explanation: "The first leprechaun appeared on the club’s logo in 1950. It was a funny man in a crown-hat with the “NBA” lettering. There was also a pipe and an oak cane on the picture. The leprechaun, designed by Zang Auerbach, was colored in white and green, keeping the signature color palette of the team." Yes, Zang is Red's brother. Take care. 🏀

@@redfanrod Well done research. When I got to the part where you said that it was designed by Z. Auerbach, a light suddenly went off in my head, and the next sentence rather confirmed it - I'm guessing that Red had a lot to do with the explanation, lol. Maybe Zack came up with the idea while he himself was pinching a loaf... Mike

Great replay and a great choice of teams! I've had Crunch Time in my collection with the all-time great pro teams from Brad Logan for about a year now but haven't got it on the table yet. I picked up a few seasons (NBA 76-77 & 80-81) from Gustavo; boy those cards are sharp! My plan (eventually) is a Maravich Replay using the 76-77 set. Your videos will certainly get me prepped for that. Keep 'em coming! Oh, by the way, using 2 sets of action cards is a great idea!

Thanks for the input, Max! I think Crunch Time is a fascinating game. I say that with its simplicity in mind. I don't come across a tabletop basketball game like this one too often. It reminds of a throw-back game, PTG Basketball, in the sense that player ratings (especially defense and rebound ratings) play a key role in the flow of the game. Ratings of "A" thru "F" don't require heavy thought on most possessions (rebounds, ball handling, defense, etc.). As I've said many times, the ball handling (bh rating) separates Crunch Time from other tabletop basketball experiences. Have a good one and good luck with your future replays with Crunch Time. 🏀

Thanks for sharing so many games. It is interesting. I have playing king of the hill with various seasons and games. (Statis Pro, PTG ABA, Hoops, Oscar Robertson game) I play games to 50 and include some strange homebrews which forces me to use all players. It has been fun. I enjoy statis pro the most because it flows really well. I would like some other PTG seasons. Any suggestions? I would even take pdfs.

Hey, DC, and thanks. Keith's health isn't all that good right now, so he has retired from distributing PTG Basketball. I only know of a couple of guys who have replicated some "missing" NCAA sets of PTG but not too much else. If you can contact me on Facebook Messenger at my "Tabletop Basketball Board Games" page I might have some home brewed cards (in PDF) I can send you. Have a good one. 🏀

Great teams- Amazing players and careers. HOFs- Reed, Frazier, Bradley, Bellamy, Barnett, Phil Jackson (as a coach), Chet Walker, Chamberlain, Greer, Cunningham, and Larry Costello (as a coach). That's 11 which sounds impossible. :) Matt Guokus I always pronounced his name with the vowel sound as in Duke- Gukus without the o. How's that for nitpicking. :)

Thanks for pointing that out. I was between GO-kus and GOO-kus during my call of that game. I'm pretty certain it's GOO-Kus, so I'll have to work on that, lol. Those teams were loaded. I like the "pre-champion" Knicks and it was a bold move to send Bellamy to Detroit for DeBusschere during the 68-69 season. This was a great game as "Bells" had stopped Wilt from scoring any points in the first quarter and, again, he shut The Dipper down in the third quarter (Wilt was 0-5 combined in those two quarters). Wilt ended up getting the last laugh, and Greer did his best to score and shut down Dick Barnett, the latest edition to the Basketball Hall of Fame. Have a good one. 🏀

Rod I still like not having to keep time by using TAC's. Here would be an optional easy fix. To increase FGA's, let Offensive rebounders shoot if you want them too. But only let your choice guard take a Fast Break. That way the Rebounders (F's and C's) won't be getting all of the extra shots. (4-6 per quarter) Remember, they wouldn't have to shoot. You may go to the next FAC. Use stamina *s here also. I just thought that was easier than adding up minutes. So for example in your Knicks/76er's game. Bill Bradley would've used up his 6 stamina marks very quickly. He becomes an F Foul rate, causing more fouls. Or get someone else in there. You could also Down Grade their Def Rate & RB Rates a letter Grade. I just thought it was easier to change the Foul rate to F. I like the FT rebounding rule you suggested! House Rules are always welcome!

I love these ideas, Bradley Logan! I will be experimenting with both yours and Gustaw's suggestions in an upcoming video. As you mention, using the original number of cards per quarter (60 for NBA/ABA) would be the preferred option. The other options, of course, would be putting additional cards in the deck or using my aforementioned game clock. Either way, I'm enjoying the Crunch Time Basketball experience. Thank you. 🏀

Rod - even for the games I’m not as big a fan of, your presentations are always on point & chock full of NBA history. Totally agree with the concept of including playoff stats…why not take the largest possible sample size? One minor thing…not sure where Barrett went to college but definitely not UK

    • @redfanrod

Got me, Larry! Mike Pratt (not Barrett) who played with Thunder Dan at Kentucky. Somehow I linked those names together. Pratt and Issel had one ABA season together with the Colonels. As for Crunch Time, I think a "shots clock" like PTG might improve the overall accuracy of the FGAs per game. I do like this game and these cards for different reasons that I do Hoops and Fast Break. Just a unique concept to team basketball. In this game, I had rookie Dollar Bill Bradley in at forward and the Knicks' offense flowed better because of his passing. He really didn't shoot much that year and his defense and rebounding aren't even close to average, but his ability to turn shots from "misses" to "makes" (with a "bh" rating of "A") really had the 76ers on their heals for much of that first half. I played him 22 minutes, which was his average as a reserve during his rookie year. I see potential in that Rhodes Scholar and in that Knicks team. 🏀
