Outstanding! You forgot to mention that when you trim the seedlings back to 5 inches, you should use all of the trimmed onion tops as chives on baked potatoes, or any other recipe that calls for chives. I would also trim back some of the tops of the harvested onions and use those for green onions.
I totally get that its a lot of work to show the whole process step by step because you shot this video over months, but I wish that was more common in gardening videos. Thank you so much for sharing the whole process!
I appreciate the fact that you waited until you had a full video from start to finish for growing onions. So many TH-camrs just tell you and don't show because they don't have footage ready. Great video!! 💚
ABSOLUTELY 💯% the best gardener is NATE!! I harvested some of my yellow onions 🌰💛 today!!😅😅 (grew them ALL WINTER here in the upstate of SC and they are the BIGGEST I have ever grown following Nates advice!! BEYOND HAPPY 😊 with my gardening skills because of this channel!!
Wow, really nice onions!!! That's definitely what my puny onions have been lacking, i need more compost in my soil and fertilizing with compost tea to get them growiiiinnggggggg! Thanks for the helpful content!!
Thank you Nate...have all of my onions started. Going through videos while I cook food for my sons Spring break snowboarding trip. Love learning while I'm doing other things that I love. Had terrific onions last season starting from seed and following your videos. PA (old) 6a/b
Great I will give this a go this year. Done a year on Carnivore which has been great but after watching Dr Sean Omara I will be fermenting most of my veg this year as there are huge benefits to the fermented veggies.
I have been harvesting my onions too late. I have been waiting for the greens to fold over. They have been going bad quickly so I will try harvesting them earlier now.
Good method! Going to follow it and give it a try! The biggest fails that I have done is not giving each onion enough room and harvesting to late. Like your drying racks but doing it that way takes a lot of patience. I think it would pay off though. Keep up the good work!
0:17 *TIMING* Anytime in February is fine. 0:30 *SHORT VS LONG DAY ONION* Short day onions grow vegetatively as days are getting shorter, and begin bulb growth as days are getting longer (good in the South where they can over-winter onions). Long day onions grow vegetatively as days are getting longer, and begin bulb growth as days are getting shorter (good for the North where onions are planted in the Spring). 1:15 *BIENNIAL* First year they grow, second year they go to seed. 1:20 *SEED VS SETS* Starting from seed is best, so grow first year. Sets are second year onions, end up with small onions that don't keep well and plant may try flowering as it is the second year of growth. 2:30 *TRAYS AND SOIL* Uses 2-tray method. Use sifted potting soil, he uses Fox Farm, but can be any as long as chemical free. 2:52 *WORM CASTINGS* Add 20% by volume, prevents many issues. 3:07 *MOISTURE* Pre-moisten the soil so it's moist, but not dripping wet. 3:15 *TRAY* Fill with soil, gently pat down, spray the surface 3:24 *SEEDING* Sprinkle up to 300 seeds per tray. He's using Yellow of Parma. They can grow very close together. 3:37 *GERMINATION* After 10-days will see them sprouting. Keep around 70 degrees Fahrenheit, use heat mat if needed. 3:50 *TRIMMING* After a few weeks when they're 8 inches tall, trim them down to about 5 inches tall. 4:15 *FERTILIZER* Use 1 fl oz of fish fertilizer per gallon of water to fertilize the tray every time you trim them. 4:27 *TRANSPLANT* Around Apr11, gently pull apart roots in tub of compost tea. Choose largest ones, set smaller ones aside. Rake back mulch and put into compost to plant into soil beneath. 5:34 *BOARD METHOD* Nate's magic method (so pay attention). Lays down parallel boards (2x4 or 2x6) on bed with 2-3 inch gap between them. Makes shallow trench 1-inch deep, lays onions in trench, covers with fluffy quality compost, waters in with aerated compost tea (if you have it). Leave boards in place. NOTE: Nate later explains that using 2x6 boards will result in larger onions due to extra space compared to 2x4 boards. 6:19 *10 DAYS* About 10d after transplanting (Apr11 in video), onions should have perked up and standing upright. Can remove boards at this point if onions standing on their own. 6:30 *8 WEEKS* About 8w after transplanting (Jun06 in video), should have well established onion plants. Shows his onions mulched with 3-4 inches of grass clippings, which help keep soil moist. Mulch is important because onions have shallow roots. Nate only watered with weekly compost tea. 7:04 *12 WEEKS* About 12w after transplanting (Jun28 in video). Nate shows hute onion plants about waist height (3-feet). Summer solstice just passed, days getting shorter, so his "long day onions" are now starting bulb formation. 7:15 *HARVEST* About 15w after transplanting (Jul21 in video). Nate shows onion bulbs ready to harvest because some are falling over. Don't wait until they all fall over. 8:58 *SOIL FOOD WEB* Nate shows soil under harvested onions, just need robust soil food web, not gimmicks like the electroculture. 9:20 *CURING* Hangs upside down on day of harvest, uses wire shelving. Let air dry in the shade for 2-3 weeks until leaves turn brown and crispy. Then cut off leaving 2-3 inches of the neck for storage. 9:48 *STORAGE* Nate shows his stored onions on Feb22, 6 months after harvesting. 10:15 *FLASHBACK* Shows red onions with all the tops flopped over, waited too long to harvest so won't store as well. Then fast-forwards 6 months later, showing most of the ones that flopped over are sprouting, while very few of the ones that didn't flop over are sprouting.
How the heck did I miss this one. Wow what awesome advice, I may even try once again to grow onions. Thanks so much Nate. You blow me away with your knowledge
Well today I planted by this method, only a small crop, it’s coming into spring summer here so I guess they will be long grown. Let’s hope I have success.
Thanks Nate, another great video. You know the best thing about your videos for me is they come out 6 months before I need them. It gives me plenty of time to prepare 😂. I'm in New Zealand 🇳🇿
Howdy, howdy from Tennessee.! I simply cannot hear this enough. I have close to 100 seedlings up about 2" that have just sprouted. I mixed our own seedling mix this season, and used heating mat and are still under lights. Your timing is perfect. My personal failure has always been onions. Much appreciation for you documenting your journey, and will try your board method this year. I am guilty of planting to deep. Tray 2 will get started later this week... feeling a bit more confident. Thanks my friend.
I’m so excited for this method! I’ve got about 600 seeds started… Yellow Of Parma and a red variety I can’t remember the name of. Last year I purchased starts (like baby plants not the 2nd year bulbs) and I only got 2 decent sized onions!! 😂 This will be my year!! Thank you Nate!
I thought I had a pretty good handle on growing onions..........and then YOU came along and completely blew apart anything that I thought I knew. Wow......great video.
Wow incredible video visual and to the point...so excited to grow onions for the first time this year...l think you are the only gardener that has actually explained the winter and summer solstice and the significance to onions...thank you!!!
kickass im gonna follow along with you this whole year i caughton too late last season.. LETSS DOO ITTT thanks for the information i cant wait to see what you come up with this year
I experimented with onions, cut and used the red onion tops in the cooking, and placed the bottom part into water until they rooted and the green also started to grow. I did this last year, when they had enough roots I planted in the garden. It was a fun experiment. Grew into about five onions. At that time I didn't know they were bi-annual. The white ones made beautiful seeds, and looked like a pin cushion 😂. So I have saved the seed. Thank You NATE for showing us your tried and true method of growing Onions. A❤W❤E❤S❤O❤M❤E
Love it, can’t wait to try it in my own garden! The board method is genius - if I am growing a really large onion variety, like Ailsa Craig, would the 2x6 boards be best for spacing?
Thank you for this info! Started my onion seeds yesterday & hoping this will be my year to finally grow Ohio s to store! I will use the board method of planting & make And apply compost tea! I appreciate the tips!!!
Greetings from zone 10 B. Another great video. My onions are doing awesome. Only been using rainwater , fish fertilizer and maringa tree fertilizer. And I'll have to tell you. I could see a big difference using fertilizer made from the Maringa tree.
Great video and info... I really appreciate the DATES of different stages. Questions: is it true onion seeds don't store well so you have to buy them every year? But have you tried saving your own seeds? When harvesting, I gather you don't wash them, but keep them as dry as possible, but what if during the time you are going to harvest, you get several rainy days, what would you do? Do you grow onions in that spot year after year, and don't change the location? What do you do with that lot after you harvest the onions? Thank you for the tips... I am going to try to incorporate them in my yard. If you like you can answer these questions in the LIVE on Saturday.
I have a couple of Weather's field reds that have sprouted from last season. I'm just going to try and put the out this season to make seeds. See Saturday for the live my friend 👍👍👍
I absolutely learned a lot through this video, I'm going to try this this season. Separate question though, and aside from the obvious fencing it off, what can I do for my garlic patch after my dog pees on it?
Excellent informative video i was struggling with germination. Ordering the thermostat controler heat mats. Planning the board method on rows of straw bales and mowing the grass between for the compost for the farm along with electric company wood chips after they rot a year. Thanks much for the information
Question - do you think the depth of the starter tray really matters? Whether you use a container that is 2 inches deep or a container that is 4 inches deep?
I grow Cortlands and Ailsa Craig (long day) in central NYS, in milk jugs under lights. They sure are easy to transplant; I jab a trowel in the soil around 6 inches. Really stay on top of watering and weed pulling. I harvest when tops have mostly died down, dry outside a few days in October, have lots of very firm Cortlands still. Great video. Gonna try your taters in bags, or boxes.
Also, in another video you said not to spray plants when the sun is out. I have a fertilizer mixture of Grass Fertilizer, Fish fertilizer, calcium and chicken 'stew' that I'm spraying my onions with. Can I do that during the day? Or do I still need to do that while the sun is down. Early AM or late PM?
Great video. When I sow black seeds on black soil, I usually tamp the potting mix fairly level, then spread a thin layer of very fine river sand, similar to what they use in golf course sand traps, on top, then when I sow the seeds I can easily see their distribution. The smaller the seed, the greater the benefit. You're transplanting April 11 in your zone... to help me translate to my zone 4, what's your average last spring frost date please?
We got our onion seeds started last weekend and have some sprouted already. Last year we had ping pong ball onions so hopefully following your video does the trick this year! 😁
Viking gardener, so you think this technique of planting between 2x4s could work for garlic so that bulbs will grow larger in compacted soil? I wouldn't sprout them first, I'd plant the garlic cloves directly.
This will be my 5th year starting onions from seed, I normally have been placing in a bin and just broadcast the seed like you showed. This year I am planting in 72 cell trays, see if I get a bit more robust starts (not being so crowded). All I use for nutrition are worm castings and compost tea. 2nd year growing Yellow of Parma, left one to go to seed for next years free seeds. Still eating last years crop with no signs of sprouting. Interesting method with the boards, think I will give that a try this year. Stay Well!!!!
This is hands down the best video I have ever seen on how to grow onions.
Agree 💯%
Best video on all of youtube! 🖖🌱☀️🌈
💯
Same here. Thanks Brother! 🌱🧅🌱 Happy Spring Gardening fellow Gardenerds 😊 #IfYouGrowYouKnow

Outstanding! You forgot to mention that when you trim the seedlings back to 5 inches, you should use all of the trimmed onion tops as chives on baked potatoes, or any other recipe that calls for chives. I would also trim back some of the tops of the harvested onions and use those for green onions.
yes I wish I would've said that in the video thank you for reminding us!!
I totally get that its a lot of work to show the whole process step by step because you shot this video over months, but I wish that was more common in gardening videos. Thank you so much for sharing the whole process!
Ace, this is the knowledge we all must be searching for in these times on earth
I am absorbing this information like a sponge. Recommending your channel to everyone I care about.
I appreciate the positive energy my friend thank you!!
I appreciate the fact that you waited until you had a full video from start to finish for growing onions. So many TH-camrs just tell you and don't show because they don't have footage ready. Great video!! 💚

Wow, really nice onions!!! That's definitely what my puny onions have been lacking, i need more compost in my soil and fertilizing with compost tea to get them growiiiinnggggggg! Thanks for the helpful content!!
I am watching this video at 9pm and i am feeling like waking up right now go get the seeds, straight to the garden no waiting tomorrow😂
That board method is going to be a game changer!
I watch a lot of gardening shows - you are my favourite and I share you every chance I get. I just wish all garden pods say their Zone...
Onions are already sowed based on your other onion vids. Yea baby!!!
Good to know about pulling late and storage. Thanks
Perfect timing. Thank you. We're eager to follow along 🙌
Very nice. Thank you....time to order some seeds!! 😊
You are a natural teacher. You sacrifice other things to show us the shortcomings of not doing the right thing.
Thank you Nate...have all of my onions started. Going through videos while I cook food for my sons Spring break snowboarding trip. Love learning while I'm doing other things that I love. Had terrific onions last season starting from seed and following your videos. PA (old) 6a/b
This gave me a dose of repect for the onion. They are a lot of work to grow.
Wish I saw this earlier. I’ll have to try this next year for sure.
Great I will give this a go this year. Done a year on Carnivore which has been great but after watching Dr Sean Omara I will be fermenting most of my veg this year as there are huge benefits to the fermented veggies.
absolutely my friend the fermented veg like onions and tomatoes and kraut and kimchi is all fantastic fermented!
GREAT! Thank you for this! I have not found a video that explains onion like you do. So simple. Thank you again!
I have been harvesting my onions too late. I have been waiting for the greens to fold over. They have been going bad quickly so I will try harvesting them earlier now.

yes my friend this is your year!!!
Thanks! Great video and exactly what I was wondering about...😀👍
Greetings from Sweden🇸🇪
I’ve watched your other video multiple times and was just as excited to watch them as I was the first time. Just as excited to watch this one!
We have onions and carrots planted in fall. Growing right now through the winter in cold ask Michigan.
Thank you, I was looking for inspiration and got it. Very good!
Its really wonderful the use of natura means.
Thanks, as usual, for the valuable information.
Super ordenada la huerta! 💪👏
I have totally changed the way I approach planting onions based on this video! Amazing! Thanks!
I thought I had a pretty good handle on growing onions..........and then YOU came along and completely blew apart anything that I thought I knew. Wow......great video.
lol isn't it a wonderful feeling learning something new and useful!!!... thank you!
Wow incredible video visual and to the point...so excited to grow onions for the first time this year...l think you are the only gardener that has actually explained the winter and summer solstice and the significance to onions...thank you!!!
I think you will have great success this year my friend thank you!!
Great video. In the process of planting my long day onions from seed.
Fantastic!!! …. New subscriber. 😊
Fabulous. Wish I had this 2 months ago for us Floridians. But there’s always next year. Thank you !
in Florida you can grow both intermediate day over the summer and short day over the winter!!
kickass im gonna follow along with you this whole year i caughton too late last season.. LETSS DOO ITTT thanks for the information i cant wait to see what you come up with this year
Gunna try first time.
Never had luck with onions before, but this looks good.
Awesome.. i need to get mine in the ground .. I'm in May now.. way late but they are still going in.. Ty Nate!! ❤🎉
I experimented with onions, cut and used the red onion tops in the cooking, and placed the bottom part into water until they rooted and the green also started to grow.
I did this last year, when they had enough roots I planted in the garden.

So I have saved the seed.
Thank You NATE for showing us your tried and true method of growing Onions.

wonderful so now you can plant those this upcoming year!!... but you can surely grow short day onions over your winter I believe?
Love it, can’t wait to try it in my own garden! The board method is genius - if I am growing a really large onion variety, like Ailsa Craig, would the 2x6 boards be best for spacing?

In southeast Ohio tried intermediate and long-day onions. Long-day in my experience produces better in my area. Love yellow of Parma variety.
Very informative
Love onion
Awesome video, thanks for your work..
Going to try your planting method this year! Thanks Nate.
I cut the green stems back on some to make space for hanging while drying. I hope that is ok. Great video!
Wow, I'm am going to try this
Greetings from zone 10 B. Another great video. My onions are doing awesome. Only been using rainwater , fish fertilizer and maringa tree fertilizer. And I'll have to tell you. I could see a big difference using fertilizer made from the Maringa tree.
brilliant method and video.
The onion 👑

Always the best and trusted information
FreKing awesome! So excited to get some land and grow my food!
Yes the best I’ve seen on the topic
I absolutely learned a lot through this video, I'm going to try this this season.

sounds like a solid plan!
Beautiful harvest!
Ingenious Nate! Any other ideas instead of boards? Wood is very expensive. Still stuck in Lodi.
Question - do you think the depth of the starter tray really matters? Whether you use a container that is 2 inches deep or a container that is 4 inches deep?
Awesome video ❤
I learned alot from this video! It is not so scary to do. Don't know why I was afraid to try onions before.
I grow Cortlands and Ailsa Craig (long day) in central NYS, in milk jugs under lights. They sure are easy to transplant; I jab a trowel in the soil around 6 inches. Nate - Best video I've ever seen on onions! Thank you!
Great video! Thank you! Can you still use the onions that have sprouted?
Thanks ..
Here in Africa we do grow yam. Do you have any video on growing/planting yam?
I've watched that your potatoes and educational. Thanks
You make it look easy!
Just right on time.
Thank you
Great video! It would be great to have the date-timeline for short day onions. So tricky to get the timing right!!
coming this fall I'll make a "shorts" video about short day onions for you!!
Killer. Can't wait
Go Nate!
Great useful content.
Many thanks!🧅🧅🧅
Started last week, thanks
What do you do with the big chunks you sift out of your bagged soil? Any specifically good use, or just compost it?
Awesome, i have failed 100% of the time I’ve tried to grow onions… next season I’ll try this method.
you rock viking!
Yowza. Ive never been able to sprout onion seeds, only the small ones for chives. Thanks you!
Can't wait to try the 2x4's!!!
Good video my friend
Good show, masterclass, cheers Nate
We got our onion seeds started last weekend and have some sprouted already. Last year we had ping pong ball onions so hopefully following your video does the trick this year! 😁
be sure to supercharge them with the "seedling fertilizer" from the video I made last spring thats the ticket!
@@gardenlikeaviking going to watch that one right now!
Viking gardener, so you think this technique of planting between 2x4s could work for garlic so that bulbs will grow larger in compacted soil? I wouldn't sprout them first, I'd plant the garlic cloves directly.
As Always, Great Content
6b. Starting today!
Just sunscribed ..you da best 👌
This will be my 5th year starting onions from seed, I normally have been placing in a bin and just broadcast the seed like you showed. This year I am planting in 72 cell trays, see if I get a bit more robust starts (not being so crowded).
All I use for nutrition are worm castings and compost tea.
2nd year growing Yellow of Parma, left one to go to seed for next years free seeds. Still eating last years crop with no signs of sprouting.
Interesting method with the boards, think I will give that a try this year.
Stay Well!!!!
Great Video Nate! 🧅
Can we make photosynthetic bacteria without MSG ? Can we replace MSG other thing ?
