In 1985, Roger Ebert (Siskel & Ebert) described it as “one of the most amazing debut performances in movie history”. She deserves all her flowers, and should’ve won her first Oscar then.

It's still outrageous that Color Purple didn't win a Oscar, there's nothing Meryl Streep, Sally Field or Bette Midler has ever done that can top Whoopi Goldberg in that role.

In 1985 it was still rare to see black people on TV or in commercials. The Color Purple was an all black cast and it was phenomenal! It inspired and opened paths for many more later 80's movies like Coming To America, Lean on Me, Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing, & more. They were still too struck by stupid to give it an Oscar though.
Whoopi is perfection in The Color Purple. I cannot wait to see Tasia breathe new life into this character.

Whoopi’s Celie is legendary. The original film is legendary. What do we think about the standing ovation for her work in the color purple on this episode of The View? There aren’t enough ovations in the world to properly ovate her performance, and the significance of the film itself. #TrueIcon. If Whoopi Goldberg had not played Celie in the color purple we as a country and a world would not have half of the character actors who happened to be African-American coming after her. Her work and her intelligence lifted the idea of what they could expect from a black actor. Oprah would not have had the opportunity to become Oprah without Sealy standing in front of her

I just learned that the NAACP called for a ban of the original The Color Purple movie because of Whoopi’s role in the movie, playing what they called a ‘lesbian’ character 😮 I watched it as a kid and never saw anything wrong with the movie. Narcissist vs. Empath. That's the deal. Oprah's chasing the love of a mother who didn't want her. Whoopi's practicing the love from the mother who taught her. Oprah knows that Whoopi will never bow down to Oprah and Oprah feels threatened by that. Not because of career or money -- but because Whoopi represents that strong maternal woman she never had a chance of being in the favor of.

It feels & seems to me that she's not giving her just due regards, respects, & flowers when Oprah comes in the mix for a long time (in my humble opinion as alleged the rift between Whoopi & Oprah ALLEGEDLY). And you can see it or sense that from Fantasia's facial expressions [like they did Whoopi wrong for making her oart of this classic moment that she was the main character in the movie then 🤦♀️🫣] not when she said she hasn't spoken to Whoopi b4 this movie and said she couldn't wait to see/speak to Whoopi on The View.

Whoopie deserved the standing ovation, no doubt. "The Color Purple" was ground-breaking when it premiered back in 1986 and it has stood the test of time which says a lot. Spielberg knew what he was doing adapting Alice Walker's book. And it is now another transformation of a wonderful story of human strength through adversity.
Let’s also give beautiful flowers to the WRITER OF THE BOOK.
