    ED: for the perceptive among you, I say 'righty tighty' in this video but was speaking from the perspective of the player. It should of course be as you look down the neck from the headstock. However you can see and hear that I went the correct way to right the issue. Adjusting towards the camera on this two way truss rod. Cheers folks and sorry for the lack of response to comments recently I'll explain my absence soon.

      You can't just turn the truss rod so much and expect immediate relief (or tension) to come through on the neck. You should have done it and waited 10 minutes.

      You may notice I made very minor adjustments until it had a small effect. I have gone back as you rightly say not 10 minutes but 48 hours later to check. The additional effect is minimal and has put the setup right where I wanted it.

    I know some people will probably scream sacrilege but with most of my guitars that includes my epiphone's and my Harley Benton's I've put roller bridges on them from Philadelphia luthier. I hardly ever break a string and to me it seems to hold tuning better and I get better intonation. But it's what works for me.

    I'm an Epiphone man. I have a 97 Les Paul Studio, 2004 SG and 2000 Les Paul Special II And A Ovation Acoustic that I bought in 1986. I can't afford Gibson's guitars but I do love my Epiphone's and enjoyed setting them up. I used them to learn cleaning up frets and neck adjustment. The wraparound strings on the tailpiece really helped. Upgrading the pickups and electronics was also fun. I was tempted to purchase a Chinese fake Gibson but didn't trust my chances of getting a good one and some how it didn't seem right. I have a friend who buy's Chinese guitars and thinks I'm crazy for buying so called expensive Epiphone's. I buy used Epiphone's for cheep and enjoy upgrading them, so what's the problem. I enjoyed this video and thank you for making it. I look forward to watching the comparison between the fakes and the Epiphone's.

    The best $20 you'll spend on any TuneOMatic Bridge based guitar is to replace that string cutter with a Wilkinson roller bridge. All of my Epiphone, Gibson, and Yamaha axes have been converted and it not only helps the string life, it also makes palm muting more comfortable. You can also simply raise the stop tail a bit via the screws (that's what they are for, after all) to reduce the break angle.

    I find it remarkable that guitar owners of today need a tech to adjust a neck and intonation. In the 60s we all set-up and maintained our own instruments, including fret dressing. Only the rich farmed it out. half a century later, a new generation of incapable kids need experts to do everything for them... Uber instead of drive, restaurant instead of cook, and luthiers to do the most elementary things.

      Today’s guitars are mostly shit . I remember my first guitar form Sears and Roebuck . It was a Sg copy and it came in tune and the intonation was perfect . Now you have to pay for them to be in tune . So the kids are told only a professional can do the work . But you would be surprised how many people know how to work on their own guitars . That comment you made tells me your not a guitar player or if you are your no good . Because I’m at the music store once a week and I never see anyone having work done . Your just making an assumption from this video .

    linseed oil is best for a rosewood neck.. keeps the wood from getting dry and cracking, also keeps dna on the surface so it can be easily removed when you change strings, not used for cleaning.. for that you use lighter fluid

    I think Epiphones are great guitars too. I have a Les Paul '56 Gold Top with P90 pickups which sounds really great. The neck pickup is really sweet and the bridge pickup has plenty of growl. I bought it new for 350€ as the shop owner had had it hanging on the wall for around 5 years and no-one had shown much interest in it. The list price was around 500€ so it was a real bargain. I cleaned it up and put a set of D'Addario 10-46 strings on it and it was ready to go. I don't have a problem with intonation (it has Grover tuners) or string breakage and it has a perfect action so I haven't changed anything on it. All in all a great bargain!

  • @peterschmidt9942
    @peterschmidt9942 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Running sandpaper though the saddle slot is always the first port of call. Pretty much all of the cheaper guitars I've owned (epi's included) that have tuneomatic bridges, never have their saddles cut well. If I'm having issues with string breakage, first thing is I re-cut the bridge slots with a nut file. Then give them a little sand around the edges just to take off any burrs.
    Sometimes, the saddles are already too low, so I'll just replace them all with blank saddles and cut new ones. It all depends on whether the bridge itself has a rattle or not. If it does, then I just replace the bridge with a decent one.
    I'm a little heavy handed when playing - I'll break D strings just by looking at them. So on most of my guitars, I've changed that one saddle to a roller saddle. For me, it makes that string last a little longer.
    BTW Yeah, that's one of the thing's that lets the chibsons down - they can't make pick guards or truss covers worth a shit. Along with pickups, generally it's a throw away and replace item.

    • @johncartelli
      @johncartelli 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      raising the stop bar they say lessens the resonance....I have two2017 Harley Bentons (SC450 plus LD and a SC Custom in lemon flame) both play as well, but different feel because of different neck shapes than the 2005 Epiphone heritage classic I also own. the epi had pups way too dark so in went Iron Gear's rolling mill and hot slag pups.($35 ea.) The Harley Bentons had great bridge pups (Wilkinsons) but the necks were too muddy. the Sc450 got a pair of Stewart Macdonalds Parson Street pafs.($49 on sale ea or $69 normally) the SC Custom kept the bridge but got a mid 90's epiphone. I use the HB SC450 the most great tone...the Epi has the most sustain but the pups are brighter than either HB...All in all i love the Epi for what it does and I love the 450 for what it does...the epi seems a bit better on quality but it is a $5-600 dollar guitar versus the 450 at $160.

      To do it without gauges, like it do, fret the first and last and adjust in tiny increments until you can make the string sound between the frets. It's the quickest and best way I have found over the years. If you take it to a luthier they will generally use a capo at the 1st fret, fret out the 14th or 15th fret and then use a feeler gauge at the 7th or 8th fret to set to various manufacturer recommended specs.

    You really do need to put some Orange Oil or Lemon Oil on the fretboard. Wood dries out naturally and the oil fills the pores and re-nourishes the wood, it helps a lot. Also, when sanding the frets, 1,000 grit is not sufficient, you need to go down to at least 2,000 to get them polished, then finish off with a liquid polish afterwards, something like chrome cleaner. Best to tape up the fretboard also before you polish the frets. Also, best to measure the neck relief rather than just winging it. It's easy to measure with some feeler gauges.

    What "incredible discoveries" did you make? The whole exercise seemed utterly pedestrion and unremarkable. I own a variety of guitars with a variety of nuts, bridges, etc. & I haven't broken a string in 30 years. I hope that little sand-paper action did the trick. I was told by Fender to also put a smidge of 3-in-1 oil on the saddle.

    I thought Epiphone would be the poster child for a Chibson. It is owned by Gibson, but manufactured in China. The greatest cost in building a guitar is labor. Asia has talent, labor, infrastructure, and material to build the lowest priced musical instruments in the world. Quality is expected regardless of price. The criticism of China - has pushed quality up without rising costs, if you are emulating older, original designs from the West.

    • @Chinaguitarsceptic
      @Chinaguitarsceptic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no doubt that quality has jumped up. This epiphone is just incredible and more than equal to many Gibson guitars.

    That is a pretty guitar. Hey some of the kits from china are guitars coming of off tge epiphone. Tokai, esp ect lines unfinished but to get a great kit is kind of a crap shoot. Just like buying chibsons. Some are good many are poor to mediocre and some just man cave wall art.

    You really need to stop with the Chibson stuff like its bad...these guitars vary greatly from seller to seller, my Chinese replicas are far superior to any epiphone they were shown to me step by step during the build process...I have posted this on other sites as well...in the pictures I got there were many Epiphones right next to the so called "Chibsons' in that shop...my guitars arent compareable to Epiphones more like the higher end LesPaul Gibsons of which I have put mine up against countless times and come out an obvious winner every time...lets get one thing clear, my sunburst "Chibson" came with a shielded copper foil cavity, 5/8 inch tiger maple cap..one soild piece mahogany body, the electronis werent the best but came with 2 Orange caps...it need minor adjustment...it weighs 9.5 lbs I did replavce the electronics not because it was need but because of my preferance the tuners yes I replaced you arent going to get great tuners and frets for that kind of money face it...some work IS required BUT ALL of my name brand guitars required the same work...I bought 5 other guitars from this same sellers and all high quality so also keep this in mind Maple is maple no matter what part of the world my guitars are very high quality and this may be the exception not the rule..remeber not all of these are equal but they far exceed an Epiphonee...these guitars sound far better than my Real Gibsons and also play better..so..I think this needs to be looked into further because 2 of my guitars had epiphone electronics in them also, ALL of my guitars went through US customs, IF these were fakes which we know they are, why would they be allowed into the country by the LAW!!! I will gladly put my Chibson up against any 6 thousand dollar LesPaul any time.

    What ya mean "This is not a Chibson?". They have a "Gibson" logo and "Made In USA" writing. They must be killer gettars!! But this is one have a "Made In China" writing. So this gettar must be a piece of sh*t :'((((

    Dear Millennial Video Posters. It sure wouldn't hurt to spell check and just go over your title before you post something as ignorant as typing Chibson instead of Gibson. I mean, you were supposed to get an education while in school. This reflects on your intelligence and how the world perceives you.

      Let's agree to disagree although, like here, I never use water (or spit usually) unless a dry cloth will not remove the gunk
