- It's time to start making our way through Let's Vote Round 2 with the first place winner, Castlevania : Circle of the Moon for the Game Boy Advance! One quick anticlimactic vampire summoning, and it's time to start a new adventure. As one of the first GBA games I ever played, this one has some fond memories for me, so I'm looking forward to collecting some cards and fighting some Draculas!

This was the first castlevania I ever played. I remember coming home from school and my mother bought me a gameboy advance with this game. Played for hours that knight and had a dream that my class went to Dracula’s castle on a field trip lol
So many good memories
This is such a great game , a classic in my opinion! GBA was an awesome system.

When this began, I pictured you tucking a super exhausted Mega Man into bed complete with a Met plushie to keep him company just before you started this game. Those MaGMML projects must have been really draining on him...

why not a belt or collar? and if it wears it as wristband, then it would sit arround the shoulders... right?
DracherRu that depends on the size of the bat. If the bat is too small then the band will just fall off.
have you seen the SIZE of these bats? it should be obvious that THESE bats, can wear it like that^^
Something to note is that the Vampire set of cards in Yu-gi-oh is based off Castlevania, Belmont included.

I imagine the fashion savvy bat was wearing the wristband as a belt and the spirit had one as an earring or a headband. We don't know how elastic those bands are plus being seemingly on fire must be a sweaty thing, so being able to keep a dry head might be usefull.
One of my favorite games of All Time, finally being LPed by you of all people. I am beyond thrilled.

It's a solid enough title, if maybe they tried a little too hard to not be a broken as Symphony; thus, difficulty curve issues.
All the parts are going to be named after Yugioh cards, aren't they?

They're giving you a lot of health and magic upgrades. Also, axe. Wasn't there one Castlevania game where the axe was really broken?
Apparently, wearing cotton makes you 100 times smarter. Who knew?
Surprised they give you double jump this early. That's usually saved for at least mid-game in Metroidvanias.
The Double-jump is actually a more basic ability, I've noticed.
Yes, in Rondo of Blood/Dracula X, the axe damage was busted, and with an overabundance of stairs and airborne enemies, it was also the most practical. Only exceptions were the Cerberus and RoB Dracula fight, where the cross was better.
But. RoB also had Maria as a playable character, and she's by far the most busted character in all non metroidvania castlevania history, so Richter still paled in comparaison to her, axe or not.
I hear Maria can also tear up Portrait of Ruin in Richter Mode.
Also the choir was good because it was made with a special system but when you play the game for yourself it sounds worse

I remember this game as being the first of this type of vania games that I played (or at least more than a weekend rental of Symphony of the Night) and really enjoyed and liked the idea of the cards to try different combos. Really great to see a new LP from my favorite dragons on youtube
So we know the Salamander card has the power of fire, and the Mercury card has the potential of strength... so the question now is, what does the Alu card have?

It is super weird, somehow i remember something like the 2nd Bomber always dropping it's card, yet any time i've played in the past few years, they make me work of it for a while.
Speaking of weird, i never could unsee the vintage Microsoft Widows logo in the room around 5:30 in the background.
It's a 20% drop rate. And I rarely seem to have the Bomber drop it until I reach the Catacombs proper.
Really love seeing you play games that have lots of secrets, so you can show off everything. Also, this game can be pretty challenging so it's fun seeing your skills. Nice LP idea.

This was the first castlevania game I ever owned and I remember all the struggles I had with certain bosses and I remember playing it a lot in my first year of high school. I also like the magic card systems, it's pretty nice. I will definitely enjoy this let's play and I look forward to seeing more of it.
I agree - the Flame Whip animation is really neat.

I mean, people usually do it for the Mega Man related ones, like I know people have said it for some of the MMBN LPs.
I'll be interested to see this, though. This is the one GBA Castlevania I haven't seen, since you and ProtonJon have done Aria, and I think Shagg/Robin did the other GBA Castlevania.

I have to agree that "Awake" is one of the series' finest opening area themes. Whenever I think of this game, this is the song that comes to mind. Also, I would have been just a LITTLE enviously frustrated if you had managed to get that third card so easily. Even with luck equipment from a couple areas from now, getting that card was a bit of a thing for me.
The start of it makes me think of leprechauns and that's always a plus.

Castlevania seldom skimps on first level music, but yeah- "Awake" is a standout among standouts. Hearing it is what got me to play Circle of the Moon in the first place.
the bat was wearing the wrist band as a sash across its torso, and the spirit was using it as an eye-patch for the pirate costume it was going to wear to the costume party it was going to go to after its shift in Draculas' castle.
I love the columns on the sides of the screen. It's just so stylish.
Woot! I've never seen or played a metroidvania style game before, so I can't wait to follow this; I'm looking forward to it!

I recently managed to get this game on the Castlevania Advance Collection on my Switch, along with Harmony of Dissonance, Aria of Sorrow & Dracula X.
One unique thing they added as an option is that if you hit a monster that can yield a card, the game will let you know!
Although to be honest, it also came with a bestiary that allows you to know what each monster drops, all the items & consumables in the game, & in this game's case, a list of what all the game's card combos, albeit with some translation tweaks.
I am kinda surprised however that Symphony of the Night is yet to get a Switch release...
Hey Roahm, sorry to be a mild sap, but thank you for making videos. I dont say much, but I really do enjoy your videos. They've helped improve my mood on several occasions. And, as one dragon, it really kind of gives me hope to see another finding happiness in doing something they love.

The first area Catacombs and it's music have been cemented in my mind. Whenever I think of metroidvania Castlevania this is what I remember.
This is a good LP, I've gotta give that.

This is my favorite Castlevania game of all time.
and my birthday is on the 6th. This is like an early present! BEST. LP. EVER.
You may know this already, but the Circle of the Moon soundtrack is filled with remixes. In fact, we've encountered five in this video alone!
"Requiem" - Castlevania: Rondo of Blood - The title screen.
"Introduction" - Castlevania 64 - The beginning text intro.
"A Vision of Dark Secrets" - Castlevania Bloodlines - Cutscene: Drac Is Back
"Nightmare" - Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse - The segment with the Bomber Skeletons, just after the fall.
"Shudder" - Castlevania 64 - The Cerberus battle.
There are more we haven't yet encountered; in the interests of preventing spoilers, I'm not going to reveal them just yet.

Massively underrated game. Got it as my launch title for the GBA and I loved it
great way to start and it's more awesome because Roahm's playing. with the bat, it might have used the item as a armor and the head could have attached it to it's forehead or it was eaten early in the day.

Ah, the hardest of the GBA Castlevania games. Good stuff.
I do like the first area theme here, but I think Harmony of Dissonance has the best first area music.
I think INT mainly affects how fast your MP regenerates. 100 INT is probably worth more than 5 DEF.
Especially once you get the Mandragora and Jupiter cards.
Summer is almost over but I feel like this is the start of a great time.
Not a bad title, though I think Dark Renewal would be even more fitting. *XD*

CotM isn't my favorite gba Castlevania by any means (that'd be Aria of Sorrow) but it certainly is still one of my favorite Castlevanias. It's the game that really got me into the series.

And so begins the tale of the card collector. No Starter Pack, unfortunately.
Dracula's portrait makes me think for some reason that he became part statue.
I just noticed Nathan was running first time we see him, yet he needs new boots in order to be able to do so again. Maybe the old ones got messed up on the landing.
I wanna think the bat was wearing the wristband as a collar of sorts, or maybe a headband. As for the spirit, uh...it...ate it? Spawned so it encapsule it? Thing is it had the stuff inside.
Fun fact, circle of the moon is the first ever castlevania game I played. Looking forward to this lp
oh I LOVE this game! Still think the Sorrow games are the best IGA-Vania style games but seeing as Circle of the Moon and Mario Advance where the first GBA games I ever owned it holds a special place in my heart even if the old GBA screen made it nearly impossible to see anything half the time ^ ^

I wonder if any cards have strange elemental powers attached to them that seem out of place in this game hehe
kind of like ganondorf's level 4+ swords in hyrule warriors
Well... At least in my case, the second elemental card I got gave me plant/flower elemental abilities, which... Yeah... (Okay, in all honesty, it's not nearly as dumb as I'm making it out to be, but I still found it kinda funny!)
Don't mock Mandragora; that, plus Jupiter, is one of the best combos in the game.
So, while the Sorrow duology and the DS games are my favorite of the portable castlevanias I must say that Circle of the Moon's card system always has interested me. I've never completed this game, and the drop rates make me sad, but this makes dragon's lp all the more interesting.
I did not notice back then but none of the main cast seems to be a Belmont.
And yes the game did not have a subtitle here in europe. The same for the Playstation 2 one Castlevania - lament of innocence which is also just Castlevania here.
I also jumped into the first bomb in my play back then. :D
off to a great start roahm, a shame about that earth drop though.
In this game, all int does is increase the rate your mp gets regenerated. Spell and sub weapon damage are determined by str.
Maybe the band was on the bat's leg, like a scientific tracker?

A fun thing to note, and something that I feel is a great detail in itself, is that when you get hit by an attack you take on a different shade and get a little particle effect when hit by an elemental attack. Like when you got hit by the bomb, you turned red and emitted flames because it's fire damage. I enjoy it, because I think at later points it's hard to tell what element some attacks are without getting hit by them. Does any other Castlevania game have that much detail on hit? The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Symphony of the Night.

Symphony of the night was my very first castlevania I played and aria of sorrow was my first gba game I played so both the listed are the ones close to my heart.
Also though the lord of shadows got a lot of hate I loved those games as well
Oh and I never played the first Bloodstained game but loved the second game

Most DSS cards are held by exactly two enemy types. The exceptions are at the right ends of the lists, of course.

This was my first true Metroidvania game! It blew my mind, though the art style didn't really complement the GBA's super dim screen.
Maybe the Wristband was being used as a bat collar? Now I feel bad for killing, it coulda been someone's pet.
Though I was bummed that Pokemon did not win, seeing Circle of the Moon go first is a good choice, I'm looking forward to this LP.
Bear in mind the prequel to this was Symphony of the Night which was set in 1796 and during the 1800's the lord of Darkness was pestered once every two to three decades from this point on. Circle of the moon is barely 40 years on from Symphony of the Night and that's not taking into consideration Castlevania 64 (+Legacy of Darkness) and Order of Eclessia.
Wait...are you gonna name every episode after a Yu-Gi-Oh card?
I don't like how there's no Eye for Decay. I also wish they'd have clearly marked items you've seen but not picked up on the map. Plus having lots of items to get off of enemies kind of conflicts with level ups, I'd say.
Also note that INT does not affect the strength of magic. It only affects the rate of MP recovery. If you want my two cents, try grabbing another Gauntlet from Hopper.
I downloaded CotM a couple of days ago. It's the first Castlevania game I've ever played (came from the show lol). That Earth Demon _always_ kills me. Kinda frustrating.^^
So this game takes place between Order of Ecclesia and Legacy of Darkness. And Carmilla has a more prominent role here than she did in Simon's Quest and Rondo of Blood.
The wrist band can also be... A hat.... Oh oh, or a cape, possibly. O.o
