‘They call us Bangladeshi’: Assam’s citizenship crisis, neglected villages | Report by Karma Paljor

In Dhubri, the bastion of AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, has hundreds of homes ravaged by erosion. The burden to prove one’s legacy becomes more difficult.
Dhubri is a town located at the edge of Assam, an entry point into Bangladesh. Its location has been a point of contention between the two countries- it’s portrayed as a gateway for illegal immigrants.
Until 1874, Dhubri was under the Koch Rajbongshi kings. Today, it is home to mostly Bengalis, especially Bengali Muslims, and is considered the bastion of All India United Democratic Front supremo Badruddin Ajmal, the perfume baron who has represented it since 2009.
This time, Ajmal faces a river of rage, because change is difficult in a region that's battered by the fury of the Brahmaputra every year.
Soil erosion has hit hundreds of families, eating up their homes, schools and even health facilities. And when your village gets washed away, how do you prove your address is ‘real’? How do you prove your legacy?
“I feel scared. I am a daily wage worker and earn Rs 250 a day. Now I spend about Rs 3,000 on travel, Rs 5,000 for the lawyer. He was asking for Rs 10,000. How do I pay him? I have sold my cows and goats and everything. I urge the government to put an end to everything,” says Rukiya Khatun, whose case is being heard in Barpeta.
EastMojo’s Karma Paljor finds similar stories in one village after another in the region. Across lower Assam, since 1997, thousands of people have been identified as D-voters or doubtful voters. A person whose citizenship is in question. D-voters and the fight to prove their citizenship remains a focal point for thousands. But even if your citizenship is not in doubt, it hardly translates into a better quality of life.
Take the example of Asharikandi, the terracotta village which got its 60 seconds of fame when PM Narendra Modi talked about this village during his Mann Ki Baat in September 2020. Artisans point to lack of basic amenities, and the absence of quality soil with the mountains cut down.

Bangladeshis are Bangladeshis neither Muslim nor Hindu. Watch to tripura what happened to them.
Tripura is surrounded by Bangladesh on 3 sides and connected to India only on its NE side by 2 states .. that also a very small part is connected ... People who speak Bengali inhibits the region from a long time ... Radcliff draw a line on a map partitioning India and overnight they became nationless.. Assam and Tripura was a part of Bengal .. so it is very much natural to find bengalis here.
@@dd78775 are u out of your mind? Assam and Tripura were never part of Bengal. You Bengalis are just too much in population that's why u immigrated to other parts and settled here and displaced the indigenous peoples. Stop making up fake history.

Dhubri was a koch Rajbongshi dominated area then how can it be a bengali Muslim majority now. The answer is that they are mostly Bangladeshi illegal immigrants. So, why shouldn't their citizenship be doubted?
Kashmir ka Raja bhi Hindu tha is ka kya matlab Kashmir me muslim majority
Do you mean there were no Muslims in the Koch Kingdom?😐
@@salahuddinayubi4160 In 1951 the Muslim population in dhubri was 40% whereas according to the 2011 census it's almost 80%. Do you want to say their population increased just by birth? The population boom is due to the influx of the illegal immigrants. If a person is illegal immigrants then why should they have the right to vote or even have right to the resources of the indigenous Assamese population.

They are literally relocating because of river erosion. Literally even a blind should understand that it's not that simple to label everyone as outsiders
@@notayanWell they shouldn't be living here first hand. Native Assamese people don't occupy lands near river and build houses over night, they have their proper villages with ancestral homes. These are not native people, that's why they are living near river side.
You should have asked for art 370 like an arrangement when the constitution was being created

It's not just about "Muslims" nor it is about the indigenous bengalis. It is about "Bangladeshis" irrespective of what their religion is! I hate it when people who have no idea about the issues of the North East present it as a whole different story altogether!
Exactly
Bengali Hindus are not outsider. They were in what the Ahoms call today Assam, the ancient Kamrup and ancient Pragyotish before the Ahoms came from China in 14th century.
In 1936 there was a Muslim Chief Minister in Assam; he invited Muslims from East Bengal. That is the reason Assam today has too many Muslims.
Religion is very important. Muslims are outsiders, but the Hindus are not. Ahoms and other tribals are not indigenous at all.
@@DipakBose-bq1vvYou're a bengali and of course you will weave your own version of history. Anyways, this pretentious nature of yours is exactly why you're hated a lot. As, I said religion does not matter anyone who came from Bangladesh after 1971 must be deported back to Bangladesh. We don't care. And also if you've read my comment I clearly mentioned "it's not about indigenous bengalis". Bengalis who are here since centuries have anyways assimilated into the Assamese culture. It's the bengalis like you who disregard the local culture and want to dominate and impose your own. So mind your language and see what you speak!
@@DipakBose-bq1vvDon't create your own version of history! 😂 Bengalis who came after 1971 are Bangladeshis irrespective of whatever their religion is. And please don't make this religious, we northeasterns will be the last people on earth to fight on the basis of religion. The bengalis who have lived here from centuries are indigenous, others are not!
@@DipakBose-bq1vv first know the definition of indigenous... Bongs ain't native to northeast we all know how u bongs entered Northeast...and i have seen u before commenting against the indigenous people of Assam... better u delete this comment or i m talking serious action upon it
Look how they're talking.. it's Bangladeshi Bengali language.
So they deserve to be abandoned and mistreated? They've been here for a long time. And let's say that is debatable. Then, if you (not you personally, but the govt officials) are not going to help them, why take money from them under false promises? And additionally, if it's the fault of helpless alleged Bangladeshis to seek refuges here, then its also the inefficiency of Govt to secure national borders. Plus, have you met any bengali? I can speak in this "Bangladeshi" bangla thoroughly, and my father and grandfather have been here since 50s and 60s. We don't forget our languages, under heavy modernisation. I'm sorry, but Indians can have Bangladeshi accent because not very long ago (compared to age of a culture or language), Bangladeshi land was part of India.
@@chirantanbiswas9330 You may have a sympathy towards them but as an Indian i am totally against illegal immigrants. India is not a dumping ground for refugees. I understand the govt. fail to provide an amicable solution to them for a very long time now and though they've lived here for many decades but Bangladeshis are Bangladeshis they've no right to settle in India. I hope the India govt. will take strong steps to deport them as early as possible. We are already overpopulated and you govt. to settle them in Assam ??? Hell no!!!!
The dialect of Cooch Behar (India) and Rangpur (Bangladesh) are the same. So, those people live in Rangpur as per your logic they belong to Cooch Behar, right? Same goes for Cumilla and Tripura or Sylhet and Barak Valley. Dude, try to think rationally.
@@chirantanbiswas9330whatever, but foreigners have no rights to change the demography of a state. Assam has the highest number of illegal immigrants of any state by a wide margin. The least we can do is identify and curtail voting rights.
@@kalaidoscopez5388 true but identifying so correctly is a difficult task, comes with a lot of nuances, that I am not aware or, so aren't you I'd guess, unless you've done good research on it and have some good points to say. Rather than causing humanitarian crisis, India should show a strict and strong stance against the once they are bringing in, and even better, Govt should do some work for Indians, rathr than spinning lies at us.
Assam is the place of ahoms, bodos, kachahari and other Assamese people

Why Bangladeshi people need to go India .we have enough opportunities to work.even 26 hundreds thousand indian are working in Bangladesh 🇧🇩

And one last thing people may confuse...Assam identity crisis is very different from others so you have to read our History first
We Love our Assamese Muslims but not Bangladeshi Muslims/Hindus
Only the local people here in Assam know about the decade-old crisis of Bangladeshis, so please don't share half-researched, half-baked information with the world. This isn't new. Today I vote for NOTA , I belong to this area.
Everybody knows India is developing country and Assam is one of the poorest and least developed state in India.
And I think Dhubri is the poorest district of Assam and this part, especially south Bank of Brahmaputra of Dhubri district and some part of South Salmara Mankachar district is the poorest one ,
Ultimately South Bank of Brahmaputra in Dhubri district is the poorest and least developed area in the world,
Still there is no proper health facilities, women still gives birth their children at home, most of the girls have not seen sanitary pad in their Life time .
Shame on Badruddin Azmal , Wazed Ali Choudhary Aftab Uddin Mollah.
There is no politician who think about the development of this area , I think even African countries are much more developed than this area ,

Nepalis and Chinese calling out others as Bangladeshis in India XD. What an irony!
When I used to travel in Dhubri by local bus in 1993 and 1994. I remember the buses were filled with Bangladeshi Muslims except for me and 2 or 3 other Assamese person. I was confused if I am in Assam or unknowingly crossed the border to Bangladesh. I am no more in Assam now. But my experience those days during my official tours to Dhubri supports the fact that Bangladeshi influx in Assam happened from a long time. Any dumb person can understand this. It is not about what BJP or RSS said. I have observed it. I am sure many of our Assamese friends also observed this. Bangladeshi infiltration in Assam is a very old fact. Anti Indian propaganda cannot change that. The question is when are these people goin to be sent back to Bangladesh.
Ridiculous to see people of our own state certifying and leveling everyone as Bangladeshis. What can be more saddening than this. You expect every poor person who didn't have the opportunity to go to school to speak fluent Assamese and Hindi and English which according to you is a certificate to stay in their own country. Nice.

Lmao, I dare Newslaundry to ask any native Assamese about Bangladeshi's!
No metter what religion they followed hindu or Muslim we don't care only one identity they cared out in assam Bangladeshi
Assam is one of India's most flood- and erosion-prone states, with the Brahmaputra, Barak, and their tributaries causing significant bank erosion. Since 1950, the Brahmaputra and its tributaries have eroded more than 427,000 hectares of land, which is 7.4% of the state's area. The average annual loss of land is almost 8,000 hectares. It is the responsibility of the government to take a positive step in this regard. But every government forgets the promises it made before the elections. The bigger the problem but the slower the process of solving it.
Well very intriguing topic, the people definately have Bangladeshi orgin but we got a cut off date of accepting these people which is debated extensively. They do also have ridiculous population too wrto the resources they have, the partly some from Mr Ajmal wouldn't suffice. Border areas are always neglected for development plus Brahmaputra keeps changing its course again and again.
Declare the district as home of Refugees and illegal immigrants and curve it out of Assam .
This video should be broadcasted on public to show the menace of NRC. Many people supports NRC, what us their answer to these people suffering?
Sir we want more videos from Dhubri
From the last 40 years there is only indigenous and Bangladeshi illegal migrants politics .It is said that Assam has 80 lakhs illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. The supreme court has tried to solve this issue by conducting NRC in Assam.Everyone in Assam was asked to fill up the NRC form and also they were asked to submit any official government certified document(Birth certificate, Marriage certificate, Land Documents,Voter list, School documents, Census documents, Passport, Income tax receipt, Electricity bill,Ration Card,1951 NRC documents,1966 voters list, Police records or any documents issued by the government)prior to midnight 25 March 1971.The Bengali Muslims and Bengali Hindus were mostly harassed during the NRC process cause anyone from any part of Assam could file a compliment on any particular persons citizenship.People were forced to travel across the state to different NRC kendra offices to prove and verify their documents. After multiple checking and verifying the documents when the final NRC was released in 2019 it was found the only 19 lakhs people are left out in the NRC.These figures are completely opposite to the predictions of the local organisations. Also it was noticed that many tribal were left out in the final NRC list and also the former president Fakhruddin Ali's family members were left out in NRC.NRC should be verified thoroughly again and the indigenous and illegal Bangladeshi immigrants issue should be vanished forever.

The term "Ranjbonshi" is a claim of royalty. So one must be of Royal lineage if at all one uses the term. However, Royal members never used the term. They're either Koch or Mech(Bodo) as their ethnicity is. Coming to the area the Koch Kingdom covered, it expanded to the entirety of Assam, Northern Bengal and Bangladesh, with constant conflict with the Ahoms in the North Eastern region. Koch Kingdom first broke to make way for Dimasa Kingdom and later Koch Behar and Koch Hajo.
Kindly know the premises of Koch Kingdom and lineage while speaking of the history of the region. It is the reason why Bodos have claimed the region as aboriginal indigenous rulers for the past 2000 years.
Considering the condition in Dubhri, kindly realise that in the state of Assam, those river sides are not encouraged to reside on because of the obvious river erosion. There are proper channels for people to acquire help and migration from other regions cannot be the sole responsibility of the resident state. Be it legal or illegal. Overpopulation was a ploy of the vote bank political tactics the Congress government devised.
All this communal and ethnic mixture happened during the period of Pre-Independence India when the sentiments of National emancipation were heavy.
This may be the ground reality of a portion of people in that place but how would one settle matters without disturbing the existing official eco-system of ethnic tribes and legitimate citizens is the question.
That's the home of the river. Don't capture the land of the river.
That's why people are suffering now
