  • I've finally gotten around to testing craft paints on my warhammer models. Are craftsmart, folkart, or apple barrel up to the task of painting squigs? This video is part of a group collaboration, so I'm also attempting to paint these squigs using only 3 colors- wish me luck!

    I think you ended up with a very retro result, the color selections and the slight chalkiness of the finish remind me of old 80s Warhammer paintjobs, back when GW's inhouse style was a lot more chaotic and earth-toney (in the 90s they got more uniform and brightly colored).

    Craft paints can get great results, it just takes a lot more work than with better paints. Mostly it involves the balance between thinning and pigment retention, and some colors just won't work well; on the other hand due to the low cost it's a great alternative paint for those who have more time than cash.

      I find that lighter colors often need an additional coat or two. My only problem with craft paints is that since the pigment is not all that dense, thinning the paint to make a wash seems to result in an invisible wash.

    • @PackmasterJack
      @PackmasterJack 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@bryanbooker4466 My one concession to fancier paints is that I use a proper wash. I had my start with 'dunk' washing in a mix of a squirt of dish-liquid with around 8:1 water:paint - but while it *worked* for quick-and-dirty efforts (and I was brand new to the hobby anyhow)... when I finally decided to move to proper Washes, the difference was *staggering*.

    • @Wimikk
      @Wimikk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@PackmasterJack I've started using craft paints as my base and layer paints, since it's much easier to practice wet-blending on a budget. I use more expensive washes and have several light-coloured contrast paints for use when I am going to use a lighter colour overtop, making them pop a bit more. It's been REALLY good so far.
      BUT it's super important to get satin-finish paints, not matte or chalk finish. The cheapest craft paints (ie $1 or less) are generally terrible for anything that isn't supposed to be fabric, earth, or rough stone, but the mid-tier paints (ie bake-on $2-$4 bottles) are infinitely better.

    • @PackmasterJack
      @PackmasterJack 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Wimikk Really? As a rule I've come to really, really not like Satin finish. I generally mix matte (for the materials you mentioned, but also flesh) and Gloss (for shinier things), also emtallics (though I vastly prefer 'brushed' finish there. In all cases, the trick is in the thinning.

    @supertaco22 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    i love this. i own a lot of the apple barrel collection, theres 110 of them ( the flat ones at least theres about 300 if you include the mutli surface and gloss ), at 50 cents each 55 dollars gets you 110 paints. your basic vallejo set is 40 dollars for 16 paints. its a no brainer if you like having 16 greens to choose from . they have a really cool metallic red and an metallic ice blue. metallic purple. metallic emereld green. also for 4$ a bottle at there is " folkart dragonfly glaze" its a sweet blend of glitters and transparent glue. i use it for " magic orbs " or " magic swords "

    • @GoobertownHobbies

      @teax25 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The secret is that you have to thin craft paint down and use more layers. Craft paint is water-based acrylic the same as mini paint. The main difference is that mini paint has more pigmentation and not as thick compare to craft paint. That about it. Otherwise, they are the same thing.

    I use craft paints quite a lot. I also use acrylic floor polish as a thinner; it basically works the same way as Lahmian Medium, helping the paint to flow better without making it watery. Some craft paints are unquestionably terrible, but they're usually so cheap it's always worth picking up a couple from each range you find, to see how you like them. It also winds up being a lot more affordable if you want a lot of colours...

      Some work really well, some are unusable. Sometimes this is within the same range. Also I never found a metallic I liked. I used them extensively about 10 years ago when I was unable to afford better paint. I was able to get really good results painting over a metallic spray painted base as the translucence of the paint allowed the metallic base coat to show through well.

    In the UK there's a brand of craft paint called Crafter's Choice, it's £1 for a 59ml bottle and usually sold at a shop called The Works - a few colours actually have decent coverage and don't dry chalky
    they dry with a shiny satin finish so I like using them on parts I would use a wash, or for painting stuff like leather
    I recommend Fawn (bone colour), the browns and Paynes Grey, the paler colours aren't worth the hassle

      From my own experience: Don't get those paints. Its a gamble. If you really want to go cheapo, try to get a good black, white, yellow, cyan and magenta. And if you paint a lot of guns, go for a silver. Those cheap paints are maybe OK to figure out whether you like painting minis or not. But you won't enjoy painting more than a couple of models with them, because its a really long and tedious process getting the color on.

      If you can find them, Delta Ceramcoat are typically the same price as Applebarrel/Plaid/Colorsmart craft paints but significantly better in quality as far as craft paints go.
      Also, don't discount artist grade paint. Liquitex Soft Body Acrylic and Acrylic Gouache and Golden Fluid/High Flow acrylics are fabulous and cheaper per oz than mini-paints, and in many ways better than mini paints.

      @Brickerbrack 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@maxschmidt666 I disagree; it really depends on what paint ranges you can find. Thing is, they're usually cheap enough that you can buy two or three just to see how they handle, so they're always worth the shot.

      Hell yeah go for it. I've done 20 or so d&d minis using mostly craft paints and they all look pretty good. Sure, I'm not winning any golden demons but as long as you thin the paints down you can get good results. The only thing I might recommended picking up would be an army painter strong and weak tone or citadel shades like agrax and reikland flesh, a quick wash with those will do a lot to improve the chalky finish.

    • @Brickerbrack
      @Brickerbrack 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mrwhitepantz Honestly, I'm not sure I've encountered a paint range yet that gives me a chalky finish... I've said elsewhere that some kind of acrylic flow aid is a good investment, and I use floor polish. It's virtually water-thin, but allows you to thin your paints without breaking down the chemical bonds of the acrylic. It also works well as a self-levelling semi gloss varnish.

    So as someone who used to use to craft paints many moons ago when I got back into miniature painting, I can tell you that the bad rep is mostly undeserved; they're definitely not the best choice, but if you're on a budget you can make them work and there's usually a staggering option of different colors. One of the biggest cons in my opinion is that you don't usually get very bright, saturated tones but if your painting style favors darker, de-saturated tones then you can make it work.

      @@TheRunesmythe saw someone else messing w/mini paint vs craft paint and said that the mini wash vs doing it yourself wash was really the biggest problem; he also pointed out the chalky muted colors. I wonder if you could just do a few highlights w/the mini paint to get the color you want and then a wash or varnish to help get rid of the chalk feel. I got 2 kids, the idea of spending a few hundie on nice mini paints is just not in the budget anymore, but get a few washes and a few ones that are really necessary(yellow and white from the sounds of it) and you likely can make a very nice model.

The same dispenser was used to fill different color bottles so between runs itd spit out mixed colors that were just off enough to not be acceptable for sale. So they ended up coming home with those run off bottles. Had like a quad tiered lazy Susan filled with a rainbow of unlabeled craft paint bottles and used those to paint all their home models and had been at it for decades. I really like those classic squigs. Looking at them is so disturbing and off-putting. They really are just a gross head with legs. This uncanny valley-esque is an aesthetic I really enjoy and gets lost a bit I think in modern fantasy art which tends more to the realistic and natural (albeit over-accessorized in many instances) instead of that classic sort of reality-twisted look. Which is not to say that the modern stuff doesn't have its own merits and positive qualities.
