  • Eleven-year-old Paisley Gardner, of Des Moines, Iowa, isn't your typical tween music fan. Her favorite singer isn't Taylor Swift or Justin Bieber or Harry Styles; it's Michael McDonald, a founder member of the 1970s rock band the Doobie Brothers. Correspondent Steve Hartman reports on how McDonald met his youngest fan.

I've listened to an eclectic PBS station for decades that plays unique music and lots of world music from Africa, S. America, and Asia. My son grew up listening to it too, of course.
When he was a baby, and being fussy, I knew to pop in a CD of "The Gipsy Kings" and he'd be happy and dancing again right away. That band is from France but plays Spanish/Latino/Flamenco style music. It's music that makes you feel happy to be alive (IMO). He also loved a group from Bolivia that played the pan flute.
I developed a love for Nigerian jùjú music listening to that station. One doesn't need to understand lyrics to feel the joy and spirit of that music. Music can be a universal language if we let it be!

@@patfrederick7327 Yes, it does! I was blessed with similar parents who didn't tell me what to think or love. I loved music from an early age, so they bought me a nice stereo, turntable, tape deck system and bought me records and tapes I wanted as gifts. In my late teens I discovered punk rock and New Wave. Not my parents' cuppa tea, so Dad gave me an excellent set of headphones.
I started sewing my own clothes when I was 12, and had a unique sense of style. I was very much into androgyny and loved David Bowie's style. I made a tuxedo inspired suit that was turquoise blue linen with pink satin lapels, pink satin pleated cummerbund, and a pearl bowtie. Someone said I looked like a gay Willy Wonka but I took that as a compliment. My parents never criticized my clothes and just said, "You're the one wearing it!". They also bought me all the fabric and supplies I wanted so I became pretty good at sewing. That was smart for them to do, because it kept me out of trouble and gave me a skill for life.

Paisley’s such a cool girl, and I love that her parents support her interest. As a kid in the ‘70s/80s, I liked the Doobies, and “What a Fool Believes” still makes me teary, that longing. MM has a unique and unmistakable voice, but his lyrics are also soulful, real, timeless and true. They speak to the heart, no matter the age.💕
