All in all, I still like the noise of my petrol Suzuki more than any diesel I've tried

I think it is worth to mention that the BMW in the video has the old N47 engine, and the current F30 facelift has the new B47 engine which is much better. I own a 420d Gran Coupé with the new B47, and it is much quieter, and has better fuel consumption compared with the old N47 engine.
That is correct. The B47 is a wonderful engine and raises the bar higher. it has 6 more hp and 20 more nm of torque than the n47 and it still keeps it's economy!

Nope your wrong. It's the Ford Focus ST3. TDCi. Bloody brilliant car. Solid build and great balance of performance and economy. 67mpg and if you want fun it has 400nm of torque. 👍🏼

peugeot 406 XUD engine should show up in the list...IMHO Its cheap...easy maintenance...has great torque...great fuel comsumption...and quite easy to increase power by just few modification And since this engine made from iron cast...its quite bulletproof and still had (potential) powers
I drove a Peugeot 406 with that engine, used as a taxi. We bought it with 118000 miles and retired it 8 years later with 451,000 miles! I agree mate, fantastic engines! Also had 405s, Citroen Xantias, Xsaras and ZXs with the same age engine. They ended up with huge mileages too!
Can't believe the BMW 3 litre turbo diesel didn't get mentioned! Amazing performance and good fuel economy. Makes a nice sound too. In all the cars it's slotted in, the 640d is the best looking (in my opinion).

Like for instance most french or italian cars from the last several decades. So which is worse? You decide. Also the diesel cars from the VW group pollute no more than diesel cars from all the other manufacturers from the same period. The only difference is, they used legal methods to fullfill the test requirements, while their cars still pollute just as much as the cars from the VW group in the real world. If you are actually concerned with the environment and health issues, you cant buy any diesel car, which does not use the Ad Blue technology. Because that is the only technology, which effectively reduce NOX emissions in the real world and not just in a completely irrelevant laboratory test. All diesels from the PSA group use Ad Blue technology now, and also most of the diesel engines in the VW Passat and Skoda Suberb. So these are actually some of the only clean diesel cars, you can buy today. To buy something much more polluting, because VW used illegal methods to rig the test, while others used legal methods to rig the test, seems rather irrational to me.
+B007 Emissions scandal or not, VW still makes some of the most economical diesel engines on the markets. And the 1.6 TDI Bluemotion featured here is not one of the DieselGate models anyway. Besides, not everyone gets worked up by that emissions scandal. Some people, like me, will still buy VWs.
BMW 320D awesome car, check service history as the timing chain was a nightmare up until about 2012. I’ve a 2009 good service history up until 145 Ks not miles. I’m doing 10 Ks oil Changes now. My economy average over 6 month is 6.2 litres per 100 kilometres.
Not even a single TDCi, amusing after Fiesta is best selling car for over 5 years and with over 60% of sales being TDCi, also Focus 1.5 TDCi with 120 HP is just plain brilliant, easily gets over 70 mpg, fun to drive built solid, there is nothing wrong with it other than its back seat which is small for its class

Wtf is with your attachment to the 3 series. Every video, you somehow manage to mention how it's better in one respect than the reviewed car. My uncle has the 320i and my other uncle has the 428i. The 320 is slow, rattly and has the cheapest quality interior of any German sedan. He is selling it. My other uncles 428i only has its enigne and handling going for it. He doesn't like the interior and only bought it because of the deal that bmw gave them. A fail to mention merc's 250d or 350d is pretty appalling. Yes it's loud, but i own one and I actually think it sounds great for a 2.0 twin turbo. And it's far more reliable than the bmw. Long term at least. Mat, the 3 series is honestly not as good as you make it seem. Again, I drove both. 320d, c250 cdi. Bought the c for its more sensible handling (bmw stuck it's ass out around every corner), leg room and headroom with pano sunroof, interior design and quality and it's power. 500nm! Sorry this is so long but my point needed to be said.
I wish diesels could gain a foothold in the US market but I fear it’s far too late. Between VW’s diesel scandal and the popularity of gasoline hybrids Americans have no reason to want them. VW took them out of our market entirely and they were the only company offering them in any significant number! It’s too bad because they make so much sense for our large freeway network.

THREE out of ten cars are using VW's 1.6 and 2.0 TDI diesels. I don't wanna know how could anyone consider these engines among the best ten in the business, because they're just not. Very bad moment to deliver such a video.
What was the criteria? Because the Golf has the same engine as the Skoda... and there are't any Korean cars (Kia/Hyundai), that have greate powerfull and economical engines and are greate value, no Renaults, but there is a Nissan (they share the same engine). Also there isn't any Merc or Volvo... I don't understand the criteria!

Diesel cars may not emit as much co2, but they emit much more nasty NOx etc than they should. Disappointed that carbuyer is still recommending these cars despite the fact they contribute to many illnesses. Fail.

No is not just a diesel problem, it has been proven in tests!!! Full-electric is not an alternative for the masses (cannot be manufactured that much) so I hope diesel and petrol will stay for a while longer or only the rich people will be able to afford to get a car.

88mpg... 74mpg... Or so they CLAIM. We all know what manufacturers print in their brochures is very optimistic and based on the flawed laboratory tests that don't reflect real world conditions at all. Its not unusual for cars to return 20mpg less on average than the official figures claim.

What was the criteria? Because the Golf has the same engine as the Skoda... and there are't any Korean cars (Kia/Hyundai), that have greate powerfull and economical engines and are greate value, no Renaults, but there is a Nissan (they share the same engine). Also there isn't any Merc or Volvo... I don't understand the criteria!

Why state the mpg figure like they're achievable (as you always point out in your video reviews they're well short). Why mention VW's rubbish 1.6 diesel and no mention of the cracking 1.6 diesel that Honda offer?

Diesel cars may not emit as much co2, but they emit much more nasty NOx etc than they should. Disappointed that carbuyer is still recommending these cars despite the fact they contribute to many illnesses. Fail.

Not for much longer. The NOX emissions are atrocious and real world economy can be matched by petrols in normal driving conditions in a lot of models.
+Matthew Hall Petrol engines also pollute, it is just not recognized as it should (a filter, as in diesel, will come as mandatory 2017?), but surely will now when diesels are on the line! No is not just a diesel problem, it has been proven in tests!!! Full-electric is not an alternative for the masses (cannot be manufactured that much) so I hope diesel and petrol will stay for a while longer or only the rich people will be able to afford to get a car.

+Viren S - don;t worry if you drive them hard, everyone ends up on the 40-45mpg area -- nobody ever gets close to the lab test figures, certainly not the VW group ones.... ;). Even the Focus ST TDCI can only hit high 50's / 60 if driven carefully in the real world, out of a supposed 67, the norm is mid to high 40's.

This Top 10 is quite useless. Cause nobody would ever get the idea of making a "Top 10 petrol cars" either, it s way to general to compare all kind of car types having in mind that about 50% of all cars in Europe have a diesel engine.

We all know what manufacturers print in their brochures is very optimistic and based on the flawed laboratory tests that don't reflect real world conditions at all. Its not unusual for cars to return 20mpg less on average than the official figures claim.
Why oh why do you keep referring to manufacturers' figures Matt?? We can all refer to tech specs on the web for those figures. Tell us the real world figures from a standardised test for all models!!
