First, I really enjoy your content.
I run dwm unpatched and with only minor modifications to the config file. I had to do some minor changes to the key bindings so that I could use all the bash/zsh key bindings properly. It is perfect for the majority of my use cases.

New to DWM here and have spent a day working with patches, restarting, and whittling down things to what I need, and they all apply to window management.
Shift-Tools, which I recommend above Shift-View, given it takes concepts from the most popular patches pertaining to window and tag navigation.
Move-Stack and Move-Resize patches expand floating mode and tiled mode navigation, making it far more ergonomic than default.
Fourth and finally is Always-Center, because the last thing I want are floating windows going haywire due to invasive design, keep them in the middle.
I'm happy. I feel like if you go further just to make DWM *look* a certain way but gain no actual useful functionality, you risk falling out of that "suckless" philosophy.

There's only one good DWM patch (+ maybe the swallow patch): the multi-monitor patch to ensure I have a separate set of tags on each monitor.

Includes a script to rebuild dwm every time you reboot the computer 🤣🤣🤣
Great video. I too have been trying to work my way back to a completely vanilla build of dwm. I used to have a real spaghetti code of patches that mostly just compensated for issues that the other patches caused! devour is a great tip I'd not heard of; thanks for that.

Great video. I have a question though, why do you recommend against binding shell scripts in config.h? What's the point of running a separate program (sxhkd) to do it instead?

    • @bugswriter_

      sorry for late response.
      I think it's simple.
      Unix Philolsophy
      and
It's cleaner, you know what you can do with sxhkd. efficiently add key bindings.
      cleaner easy to change.

Hey @BugsWriter, What do you think about AwesomeWM which is a DWM fork. I know some people may want to choose DWM over Awesome due to hardware availability (performance) and simplicity, but from my personal experience, AwesomeWM seems to be a good competitor for its high customizability with reasonable performance for all the features it offers. Would you consider doing a review?

    hey !!!
I watch your video and love it but I face a problem (actually a lot of but there's only one that i cannot solve )
so the problem is when i change the keybinding most of the key not working only some working (alt + b for hide dmanu , alt +shift+q for kill client )
after a lot of try I downloaded the dwm again and extract the defult keybinding from config.h and paste in my dwn config.h file
but after that same thing happened in this time i don't even change the keys but only some keys are working . (already search a lot on insternet but not able to find )
can you tell me what's can be wrong ???????
BTW i am new to linux
EDIT : I reinstall my whole os and DWM and do it 2 time now I thing there is a bug in kali whenever i try to edit config file (just a littlebit ) it stop working for some key binding
so i wil try it on other distros
EDIT--2 : FINALY !!!!!! I am able to do it on ubuntu-server. continuesly study wikis and going to sleep on 5 in morrning . I am able to do it
    Thanks BugsWriter for motivation

absolute massive fan of your content, but -
hear me out: i use the latest DWM with the latest DMENU when i remove the colors from config.h in dwm EXACTLY as you did it and recompiled using stock dmenu and stock dwm, dmenu does NOT spawn, it works completely fine without doing what you said. this should be 100% reproducible and i have tried a bunch of different things for several hours now, and i don't know how to get dwm and dmenu to use pywal colors.

I wanted to use the suckless software too but ST was too complicated because I don't know how to edit and compile stuff. Fortunately I use Wayland/Sway and the foot terminal is so good I don't need to use ST. Have you tried foot? Put 'exec foot --server' in your sway config and use wofi/fuzzel/dmenu to launch 'foot --client' to make it faster.

Something about recompiling dwm right before starting it makes my computer freeze completely except for the mouse.

I know what it is: I would need my root password recompile it, but I can't have it on startup.
I know this because when I quitx and startx back again, having used sudo recently, it works. I also tested it not having used sudo and yeah, it broke.
Now how do I compile dwm without needing root? Should I, really?
Actually I just had an idea: either making it so the computer asks for the root password as soon as I log in, by putting something in my .bash_profile, or telling it to run setbg on .bash_profile.
      Let me test it...
