    Do you speak multiple languages? Well done! Does that make you a translator? ABSOLUTELY NOT! Suggesting not to translate word by word and trying to "adapt" the text for the target audience is a much too simplistic way to summarize endless theories about Translation studies. There is plenty of literature about translation techniques that this video cannot replace. By the way, "adapting the text" is what is called "localization". To those watching this video: do not underrate translation jobs, it takes years to learn how to translate properly and being bilingual is not enough. PS. There is no such thing as beginner friendly translation jobs

      I couldn't agree more. I recently got my degree in Linguistic and Cultural Mediation. I did translate a couple of texts from English into Italian and from Russian into Italian.
      Even though I've always prided myself in my ability to speak English at a pretty advanced level, I have noticed that it really only matters up to a certain point. There are a LOT of other things to consider when translating (and how well you know the source language is only a small part). Things such as achieving the proper style, making the text flow naturally in the target language, localization, even the language pair itself. For example, translating from English into Italian poses an additional challenge in that English is a more synthetic language, which uses a lot of lenghty, wordy compounds obtained by juxtaposition of several words. Italian, being a more analytical language doesn't really use this kind of compound word formation, so you have to render it with a clause or a whole sentence; which in turn contributes to making the target text even longer. Length is also another component. Chances are, your TT will be longer than the ST, but that also needs to be controlled. Your translation should not be twice as long as the original, and it should still try to maintain more or less the same style and tone, the same intentions, and convey the same core message as the original, while flowing naturally and not "looking like a translation". There are SO many factors 😅
      And, as M. Eta Trabing said: _Being bilingual doesn't make you a translator or an interpreter more than having two hands makes you a pianist_
      It's so true!

    I'm a native Sundanese (Not Sudanese) with MA degree on Sundanese language education. I do translation, editing, and interpretation related freelance jobs. I found that most of the English-Sundanese translator relied on their "native status" without considering linguistical aspects, so this makes the translation very poor.

    Well... Are you actually familiar with freelance translation? Have you yourself worked in this field? It sounds like you just researched it on platforms like Upwork, which mainly caters to low-paying, low-quality clients. Your video makes it seem like you can almost wake up one day and decide to start working as a freelance translator, when in reality the translation market is a rather difficult one. It takes talent, research, technical skills, a specific niche expertise, an entrepreneurial mindset, in most cases a degree, a lot of determination and persistance, and a good bit of luck... Also, depending on your location and needs, $30/hour is not much. Someone coming across this video might get the wrong impression and end up undercharging themselves.

I thought about offering my skills after I needed legal documents translated by a certified translator from English to Finnish. To my disappointment the documents had such terrible translation mistakes that I had to re-translate every page, get them stamped by the translation company and then pay for it. :) I also have a marketing degree and have built and run businesses in Finland, as well as in the United States.

    I do Spanish Interpreting with an Agency out of California, and I live in Las Vegas. I make a satisfactory Supplemental Income as an Independant Contractor for almost 3 years now at mostly 99% $1.00 a minute? I also do Translating Documents, which I did before this. But I want to make more money..at which I ised to make $25. per page Translating? I'm moving soon back home to Miami, and I was looking to change Companies or other line of work within my same Skills?

    I'm certified translator and have 1 year experience, I don't get regular offers and it must be for my little experience. If they want trained people then they should give them chances to prove themselves hate these over capitalistic thinking translation firms. I'm force to work as tutor for 3 years now to pay my bills, what for have I studied this. It's such an unthankful and very selective with lot of competition field to work in
    Translating websites and blogs can be more tricky than product listing oftentimes they have hidden content, graphics, lunks. I disagree that someone with no marketing experience should do especially website translations.

    is it just me or it is unbelievably difficult to make a living this way without a degree? I mean for god sake, I'm native in 2 languages! What should I do, get a degree on a language that I'm already native in?

    • @imanmusic5160
      @imanmusic5160 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Having a degree is important because it is how you prove that you speak a language, you know a lot of people just want money and they use Google translate to do the work for them but it is not a good quality of work, so that's why some do require a degree

    • @hx1487
      @hx1487 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Get a degree in technology instead, and look for jobs that require bilinguals. Trust me, I did get the translation degree.

    • @SeanOCallaghan0106
      @SeanOCallaghan0106 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hx1487 why technology then?

    • @paolagnocchi3914
      @paolagnocchi3914 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't get a degree to learn a language, but rather to learn about translation techniques and translation studies. Being native does not make you a good translator, you need to develop specific skills. Also, specializing in a certain field is a plus.
