I remember watching the game that night! Wow!...as a Canadian, what a humbling experience. The Canadians won the series, but just barely. Kudos for the Russians!
Canada lost hockey virginity :) winning ... dirty play against Kharlamov... Even 33 years later, Bob Clarke's two-handed slash that cracked an ankle of Russian superstar Valeri Kharlamov in the sixth game of the Summit Series...
Yeah, dirty playing was the only chance for Canada because Soviet was the better team in this series. We have seen a lot of that behavior from Canada during the years when they have had problems with European teams, because they think they are so much better and when they realize they are not they don´t know what to do and so they begin to play dirty. Unfortunately the referees has often let them do so.
We knew here in Finland in 1972 that it is going to be 4-3 wins a draw results. The Soviets beat Finland 6,825 goals for the Soviets and Finland 2,03 goals per game.We tought that Canada is twice as good as Finland so the outcome would be Canada 4,6 goals per game the Soviets 3,41.Actually what happened was Canada 4 wins Soviet 3 wins one draw and the goal scoring was the Soviets 32 goals in 8 games and Canada 31.The Soviets 4 goals per game and Canada 3.875 goals per game.Canada wins 8-0 a joke
The outcome would be Canada 4.06 goals per game not 4,6 goals. The correction.Team Canada had never faced a team like the Soviets.TheSoviet played a passing game a great skating a puck control.Team Canada should had known this before game 1 and be ready for many passes and skating
Is that the series where Canadian thug-in-charge Bobby Clarke intentionally broke Kharlamov's ankle? That, effectively, ended Kharlamov. He was never the same player after that injury.
Canadian team was not ready to play. Scout from Maple Leafs watching Russians in 2-3 exhibition games before the series. Scout from the Maple Leafs who won 0 in 50 years. Dryden was terrible. Canadian team did not play as a team until Moscow. Phil E and Paul Henderson with Boobie Clark, slash on Valery K that won the series. Funny thing is seeing Alan Eagleson running on the ice to chase after Russian officials. He could have ended up in jail . We know what happened to him 6-7 years later.
Ken Dryden was never a good goaltender. He had such a good record, because the Montreal Canadiens were in front of him. His lack of actual goaltending skill was exposed in this series.
+daniel woodworth : Dryden was terrible in this series. He should have been an award for the WORST Canadian player. He was flopping on the ice like a seal and Russians noticed that he was too far back in the net. 3/4 goals in Game #1 came from shots off the wing.

Russian army!!!
Savard’s observation is spot-on.

No, they've lost because they were so stupid to think that in USSR they can't play hockey...
It's amazing how goaltending developed in the 80's and 90's.
need to mention that Canada lost in that match in spite on
its rude behaviour
Excuse me?? We were gracious hosts! The Soviets were VERY rude in cheating and stealing our steaks in Moscow!
Exactly
Maybe not rude, bur there was an overconfidence especially after the first goal

This clip comes from a specific video made for the 15th anniversary of the series. I had it as a kid. Does anyone know the name of the video?
Great!
Dryden is French for SIV

Bobby Clarke was not a thug in spite of the team he was on. He was a decent player. He only gave what he got.
The same series Henderson was chopped down by Alexander Maltsev in game 5 , yes.
yes...he admitted it later. Phil said...this guy is killing us...do something and I broke his ankle.
No Ovechkin and Bure does not compare with the real stars .. eto ... indescribably inimitably
Первая победа Красной Машиной против Канады! Супер! Это можно смотреть тысячу раз с удовольствием!
Less than 3 years before this game the Soviet team was like wise surprised by the Montreal jr Canadiens as the youth team best Russia 9-3.

Maybe Russia getting beat 9-3 by the under 20 Montreal youth team in 1969 helped form opinions?
