    There seems to be some confusion in the comments section here. The claim is NOT that Hebrew was the first written language, but the first alphabet. The alphabet is, basically, a system of writing in which the symbols portrayed represents the sounds of the language. These symbols are combined together to represent words. Compare this to Egyptian hieroglyphs, for example, which uses symbols to represent entire words. This is why ancient Egyptian writings have 100s to 1000s of symbols while English has 26.
    I am not trying to argue the validity of what is being discussed here, just providing an understanding for those that want to argue that there were older written languages.

    • @scottintexas
      @scottintexas 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      David True The pictographs are symbols representing things or concepts, such as an ox head (aleph) to mean strong or first, a simple box (beyt) to represent a house and the nail (vav) to mean “and” for connecting two words or things. Over time, they would then come to be synonymous with a particular sound, but symbols (phonemes) representing sounds are called phonemic orthography. Eastern European and Black Sea areas have this.
      This makes a alphabet/language like paleo-Hebrew very valuable in understanding meaning or the combinations, words such as abba or places like Bethlehem become far more interesting and valuable in our present day understanding.

    • @scottintexas
      @scottintexas 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Tommy Lynn I think you mean cuneiform, such as Sumerian, Akkadian, and Ugarit. These languages used series of wedges in varing number and direction which were based on the use of a simple tool. They were relatively crude by comparison to paleo-Hebrew and other semitic scripts.

      leumasdiderot As regards Hebrew, keep studying.
      Indeed, the current Hebrew months are not names YHVH gave them, but the rabbis after Babylonian captivity.
      Don’t allow your feelings to interfere with your thinking and studies. It will lead you to false conclusions.

    • @davidtrue4255
      @davidtrue4255 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @leumasdiderot With all due respect, your usage of biblical text does not prove that God Himself gave the Israelites the specific names of the months they are to use. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that you are assuming Christians believe that God himself wrote the Bible. This is a false assumption. If you talk to a Bible scholar, as well as many Christians that have looked into it, they will tell you that men wrote the Bible by inspiration from God, which means that the authors wrote it in their own words. So, if the original author called the first month of the year Nisan, then they would write in Nisan for the first month.
      I think it's ironic that you used an English translation to prove what the original authors wrote in an ancient language, which completely ignores the fact that minor translational errors can occur. In short, your argument is little more than a strawman fallacy.

    • @davidtrue4255
      @davidtrue4255 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @leumasdiderot So, your argument is that the text can only be true if the person it is describing is the one writing it? Do you realize how absurd that argument is? Imagine using that same methodology to a science textbook, or published paper. Astrophysics textbooks are a hoax because the stars didn't write them. All of our modern history books are hoaxes because they weren't written by the people that are being described. The trustworthiness of a biography is based on whether it is an autobiography or not. This is an ad hominem fallacy, and your argument is fallacious.

      @David Davison Alphabet. Sumerian cuneiform is not an alphabet. It's something more akin to Chinese, symbols that are entire words. You're confusing a writing system with an alphabet. All alphabets originate from and center in on Phoenician (aka Canaanite) and Paleo-Hebrew, which are virtually indistinguishable, and both of which are associated with the Hebrew people historically and religiously. Many language scripts are older than Hebrew (did you not realize he talked about hieroglyphics predating the Hebrew script?), but it's very much in the running for being the first alphabet, as the lecture demonstrates.

      In 1920 Hitler and the Nazis were obscure. Hubert Grimmes wasn't widely known nor discredited among German citizens, no more than Americans are aware of scholars who do this type of work today. This discovery does build up the reputation of the Hebrews as "The people of the book".

      @@NateSpinney The Labor or Socialist Zionists did not even have a country during the War. There was no Israel until 1948. They may have selectively desired non-Orthodox Jews to come on Aliyah, but they were in control of nothing. They barely had a say about what occurred in the Holy Land, much less than what horrors the Germans could inflict on Jews in Poland.
      It was the British who passed laws about how many Jews could come to the Holy Land starting in 1939. The Labor Zionists had virtually no say in the matter.

    Sorry that i implied that Doug was denying my belief that there was older tradition of writing before Babel. But historical difficulties are implicit in the event of the Language Confusion. We can well imagine that for some time all sorts of ways of reinventing writing were invented in different places. Now Egypt, and trading peoples around the area such as the Phoenicians and Greeks, would perhaps take an interest in finding ways to correspond between trading and negotiating parties. Thus, I guess, some sort of alphabet. This time of Joseph is crucial for developing a better understanding of history. Doug found some cool stuff there!

      @@mitchellc4 my friend, monotheism does not require unitarianism. Trinitarians are monotheistic; we believe in ONE God. The true God is a multi-personal being - a trinity. Up to c.200 AD Jews also believed God was multi-personal because the OT demands it.
      For example, read Gen 18 & 19. Three people show up at Abrahams tent. From the narrative we learn that two are angels (19:1) and one is YHWH (18:1, 18:10, etc.) They all eat and YHWH promises Abraham a son etc. When they're finished, YHWH, the two angels and Abraham all walk toward Sodom. YHWH tells Abraham what he plans to do. The two angels go a head to Sodom while YHWH and Abraham stop and chat. In chapter 19 we have the interaction with the angels in Sodom and then in 19:24 we have an interesting verse: "then the LORD rained on Sodom and Gomorrag sulfur and fire from the LORD out of heaven." What?! There's two entities called YHWH?! Yes! And there are many examples of this in the OT. That's why first century Jews who recited shema daily could declare that Jesus is God along side God the Father without thinking that they were compromising their monotheism. In fact Paul explicitly applies the Shema to both God the Father and God the Son in 1Co 8:6.
      Yes, Jesus claimed to be God - John 5:17, 5:23, 6:62, 8:58, etc.
      Yes, the apostles explicitly called Jesus God - John 1:1, 20:28, Titus 2:13, 2Peter 1:1, 1John 5:20.
      Sorry, but the NT emphatically demonstrates that God is multi-personal and proclaims Jesus to be one of the entities of that trinity. If you want to be a unitarian you can't turn to the bible for support because it is thoroughly trinitarian.

    I'm glad to know that treating the Bible as truth yields such insights and discoveries. As believers, we know the Bible is true but there are those who doubt, there are those who call it allegorical, and of course, non-believers don't believe. Treating the Bible as straightforward truth bears the most fruit.

Gen 37 clearly says that Yaakov was still living in the Hevron Valley when he sent Yoseph to check on the welfare of his brothers up north. So while Yaakov had earlier in his travels spent time in Bet El for a few months, he clearly lived next to Hevron from when he came home to take care of his aging father after returning from Lavan's house. He did not dwell next to Bet El. I have nothing against Bet El. I live about 7 kms south of Bet El, but it certainly is not Hevron...

That passage actually refers to Abraham and descendents would be wanderers in lands (without a permanent home) for 430 years. Jacob entered Egypt in 1672BC and the Exodus was in 1457 BC. Proof? The life spans of all the descendants of Jacob listed do NOT add up to 430 years - only about 250 years.

    Dr Petrovich, I think if we go mathematically about the sojourn, I don't think it is fit the narrative that Israel under the bondage for 430 years. But if we take into the account of Septuagint where it mention in Exo 12:40 which include Canaan, then from the time of Abraham received the promise until the time of Exodus would make more sense. In fact, Paul quoted the sojourn period which indirectly imply Canaan where the promise related to the sojourn period from the time of Abraham received the promise. Plus, in Septuagint, Exo 12:40 also mentioned Canaan in the sojourn.

      The script found on the walls of caves and copper mines in the Sinai is actually cursive Hebrew which has frequentally changed throughout Israelite/Judean history. Even in the last 1000 years, modern Hebrew cursive script changed from "Rashi" script. The classic "printed" Hebrew script in reality has not changed at all. Look at the Book of Isaiah in the Dead Sea scrolls. It is virtually identical to the Book of Isaiah in a modern Hebrew Bible. 2200 years passed--- no change.

      Agreed that the evidence is mixed, but his arguements aren’t impossible either. The early text he showed (Asenath house) corresponded well with Hebrew. If we had more data or texts we might get something more convincing. He said from the start he was going in with the assumption that the Proto-consonantal script was Hebrew. We do have a fair amount of evidence that Israelites were in Egypt before the 1400’s. He wants to make the more distant assumption that, because he holds the Bible to be historically accurate (I do too), he thinks it’s reasonable to believe that the protoconsantal script was developed by Israelites since they were there. The additional evidence of the mentioning of the home town of Bethel is pretty neat, but again not confirmed. I believe the paper you are referring to puts the development of proto Canaanite much later than the video does. The video is arguing for a much easier conception to the proto-Constantal alphabet system. If the early scripts he showed were truly proto-consanantal, the development of such a system could have really been done by anyone. If that is the case, the early evidence of proto-Canaanite (found in mines mostly) would be an alphabet that borrowed from an earlier (possibly Hebrew(at least in the opinion of this video)) source.

      @anne Chung I agree, it seems farfetched. Thanks for clarifying. Personally, I assumed Israelites picked up the proto-canaanite (sometimes called proto-sinaitic) alphabet from Canaanite workers while both in Egypt. If we had more data or clearer inscriptions we might be able to figure out if any Hebrew was really being used in the inscriptions. Even then how could anyone tell? Semitic languages all have such similar origins, and the verbal roots overlap. It would be impossible to tell whether or not it had really come from one group or another unless it specified specific names or places, because Hebrew undoubtedly changed during the four centuries after the inscriptions to the time when we have better records of Hebrew. This is probably why he focused on names like "Asenath" and "Bethel". If he really did find those or if they were reliable I think that'd be a neat find, but yeah from what I can tell he doesn't have good enough data.

    Is there a reason why the more modern Hebrew characters look so similar? It’s difficult to learn because so many of the characters look nearly identical.

    Perhaps Joseph's sons or whoever it was that wrote this thing were having to adapt or reinvent some form of writing. It is confusing to me, but I can't help but imagine that it was more than oral tradition before all that. Book of Enoch? Accounts in 'Jasher' or Rabbinic traditions of pre-flood fathers teaching their sons writing? Was long living blessed Shem, (Melchizedek was his code name?) just twiddling his thumbs or working very hard to teach people after the language dispersion how to adapt and how to preserve the Truth that eventually Moses compiled in the Book of Genesis? Maybe I missed something, but I will listen some more. I understand that you worked very hard and have discovered something significant. I appreciate and respect people like you. Perhaps as a non-scientist and a non-scholar I only have the artistic fuzzy type imaginative mentality that just wonders about what really went on in so called 'pre-history' which is to say, 'pre-language-confusion-and-after'. If there really was a book 'Jasher', it would seem to be as the name implies a continuous multi-generational account, and Abraham would have contributed to it. But Moses, the master historian of his day, with much extensive material preserved by the Levitical tribe that he rediscovered his roots from, was like God drawing a line in the sand about what was sacred in history, the pivotal event of the Exodus being in which Moses' God proved authority actually began the Canon, with the other writings which preceded coming to take a more supplemental status, many of which were lost anyway. Job was preserved. Maybe the non canonical history book of Jasher somewhat survived the Spanish inquisition and the difficulties of recopying damaged copies hidden for years in those and other difficult times. I think the ancient Hebrews were familial reverent historians, and the later Jews were humbled inquisitive researchers into comparing notes with those God forced them to learn from. Thus, maybe, some of the stories in 'Jubilees', a most exasperating book, though, I must say. Now that might be a 'historical novel'.

    Hebrew "Aleph" is the same letter as modern "A". "Hey" is "E". "Yod" is "I" (and "J" and "Y"). "Ayin" is "O". "Vav" is "U" (and "V" and "W" and "F")... so the same letters we call vowels are in Hebrew... its just that the Greeks decided to call those vowels... but saying Hebrew doesn't have vowels isn't entirely true - since those very same letters come from Hebrew...

    TY for doing the work needed to bring this information to the forefront and explaining it to were it could be understood. For many many yrs. I have thought that there had to be some sort of engraving somewhere in Egypt that would show evidence that The Hebrews did live in that country since they were there for many centuries, followed by The Lord bringing them out of Egypt to the land that HE promised their forefathers Abraham, Issac, and Jacob. Give honor and praise to HIM who lives forever, AMEN. I think you made a good point at the end of this video. as you ask "Why now" ? "For GOD to make HIS name great throughout the whole world etc".

    The proto-Sinaitic script had about 27-29 different letters, much like Arabic, Ugaritic, Sabaic have 27-29 different sounds, and very much unlike any known stage of Hebrew. The ancient North Arabian script has symbols much closer to proto-Sinaitic than any other script, including the oldest known Hebrew script. E.g. 𐪑𐪁
    How do you explain that ancient North Arabian has symbols for sounds that Hebrew doesn't even have, and which are part of proto-Sinaitic such as gh 𐪖? This sound isn't even found in Hebrew anymore.
