    I saw someone else saying that this thing most likely exists to help Valve grow the presence of Steam in Japan. A lot of games work with an Xbox controller, and since Xbox’s presence is basically nonexistent in Japan they decided to work with a local company to make a controller that functions like an Xbox one. The guy was also saying a lot of the same things you did where that company’s controllers aren’t outright bad, but they aren’t good either. They’re in the awkward middle ground where they’re functional, but feel cheap. He was also saying that this isn’t an indication of Valve making a Steam Machine 2 or a new incarnation of their weird controller (I remember having that contorller. Not sure if we still have it. I think the thing might not have worked, so we got rid of it. I’ve heard the people who like that controller really like it). If they were to dip their toes back into the console market they’d most likely make a controller that’s basically a more compact version of the Steam Deck’s controls.

      I agree. Seems like Valves entry to the Japanese market. And the Japanese economy isn't the greatest, so that is why the controller is "cheap" relatively speaking.
      It is also worth noting that this controller seems like a slight redesign of Hori's existing Xbox controllers. They seems to have licensed controllers for a few companies.

      Exactly the reason. This is actually A Nintendo switch controller that has just been made into a steam deck with back buttons and capacitive touch sticks. That's why there is a lack of travel for the triggers. I was really hoping that valve would make one by now with four rear paddles full gyroscopics and haptic feedback. Maybe soon

    Thanks for being the first to feature this controller! One thing that's a big selling point for me is actually the touch capacitive sticks for gyro activation. That's how I typically play on the Steam Deck and I miss that feature when using a DualSense. It would be cool to see how well that functions here.

      TLDR: touch sensitivity works fine. Gyro feels ok but slightly laggy?

    If you use gyro you dont want very heavy controllers usually.
    As for the gyro showoff, the setting you used is not ideal, you really wanna use as mouse or to mouse in order to get a good idea.
    I hope the gyro issues are due to set up and not hardware because if it's just a meh controller with meh button feedback and meh gyro sensors, it's somewhat of a slap to the legacy of the og steam controller.

    • @LandenL
      @LandenL  23 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +2

      Wanting a light controller for gyro is a good point. I didn't think of that.
      It's hard to tell in the video, but the gyro feels like it is moving in small increments instead of a smooth movement. In programming terms, it feels like the gyro is using integers instead of floats. Idk if this is a bug or is unfixable.
      Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

      @aboveaveragebayleaf9216 16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +3

      @LandenL yeah, you definitely want mouse gyro. Joystick input for gyro is often pretty bad. Setting vertical sensitivity lower, and resting it on your lap or a desk is pretty important for steady gyro. There are many ways to skin a cat though. Some people also have success with acceleration. Gyro is promising, but there is no gold standard quite yet. I have been playing with gyro quite a bit lately. Flickstick videos has some guides.

    Hori controllers always seem to be missing so many features, like switch controllers with no gyro or wireless. It feels like they're stuck in the past and getting left behind by other controller makers. Everyone else has moved on to making more premium stuff and they're still stuck in that third party ps2 controller mindset

  • @Jason-wr1jc
    @Jason-wr1jc 21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +13

    If you want to try out the gyro with baseline settings that should feel pretty good, use Gyro to mouse [beta] with these settings:
    Set your gyro activate button to what you like
    Gyro speed deadzone turn off
    Gyro precision speed, turn off
    Vertical/horizontal output mixer set to -25%
    Acceleration linear
    3DOF to 2D conversion set to Local
    Everything else can be set as default and you can adjust your sensitivity to what feels best. It is unlikely to fix the stuttering as I think that is likely a Bluetooth issue, so try wired and see if it fixes it. But these settings will be a good starting point and much better than what you're currently using.
    An updated video using wired with these settings would be appreciated by the gyro community if you feel like it/have the time. Also if you could weigh the controller, I actually take out the battery and rumble from my controllers to make them lighter :)

      Not really since this thing supports Steam input natively. Including the gyro functionality which doesn't have to be setup under PlayStation controller support settings on Steam. It works right out of the box natively with Steam input including the guide button on it which doesn't work for Xbox/PlayStation controllers unless you set it up to work that way.

    Mushy triggers. No rumble. Bad color matching on the same controller. That horrible battery icon. Bad gyro.

      For the LCD at least, the dongle should have an active power source apart from the Deck (like a plugged dock) and the Deck must have been suspended and left connected before suspension (if you unplug it while suspended, it won't work as the USB would have desynced).
      It's a hardware problem on the LCD (it was designed to cut all output power on suspension, unlike the OLED).

    It doesnt happen often, but same games do get weird about gyro input. its usually best to just map they gryo directly to mouse input. I'd also recommend testing it with a non-valve game. valve has this weird thing they like to do where they build these API's and features like steam controller input for their games, then half ass the support for them so shit only kinda works. best to just map everything to either xinput or mouse/keyboard.

    10:25 From my understanding that's the case. The OLED Deck can wake on Bluetooth while the LCD models cannot due to the Bluetooth hardware on the LCD models just not supporting it as a feature.
    As for the weight, it's definitely the lack of rumble since the Sixaxis was just unusually light while the Dual Shock 3 was actually the expected weight-the Sixaxis did seem to have reasonable battery life regardless of lack of weight, so it may not be a good indicator of battery size. That said Hori does make good fight sticks, but they've made some odd design decisions with their gamepads. For example their Switch left JoyCon that has an actual D-pad instead of the 4 buttons seems like it'd be an obvious upgrade, but it lacks an onboard battery, rumble, and gyro. It's not necessarily a deal-breaker, but really it makes the audience who would likely purchase it much smaller.

    • @LandenL
      @LandenL  11 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      I'm really bummed out about wake-on-bluetooth being OLED only. But can't justify the upgrade atm. I just posted another video talking more about the controllers. Another commenter mentioned that lightweight is a good quality for gyro gamers, so I think the reduced weight is more reasonable. My two biggest problems now is the fact that the gyro works best when plugged in, and the trigger button travel distance is really short.
      Also, a joycon without a battery, gyro, and rumble does sound really bad lol. What were they thinking?

    • @maikerugo
      @maikerugo 10 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@LandenL Hori is better known for their fight sticks and it kind of shows. When you take a look at the design decisions put into them versus their gamepads the fight sticks are often more sensibly designed. Some of their fight sticks have included a track pad and extra buttons on the side of the stick's case for compatibility with the PS4, but they completely omitted a track pad of any kind from the controller aimed people using Steam when it's been a feature of Steam hardware as another way play games that normally use a mouse (gyro is good for aiming in FPS/TPS titles, but a track pad is a better fit for mouse input in games that use a cursor).

    0:27 So you actually have no clue what the Steam Controller really was. Did you even look at a picture of it for more than two seconds?

      The Steam controller was Valves attempt and making a controller that was compatible with PC games. The original goal was likely to make a controller for their now discontinued steam machines, a sort of predecessor to the Steam Deck. The real original Steam controller was entirely different from the Hori gamepad featured in this video. However, as valve no longer manufactures a first party controller, this is the only controller that is officially licensed by Valve to work with the Steam Deck. As this is the case, this is the new 'Steam Controller' in my opinion. I would much rather we have a first party Steam controller, but unfortunately that is not what we have gotten. I do actually own an Original Steam controller with the goofy touchpads, but that is currently in the United States still in it's box. I am keeping it as a collectable.

    Clickbait. This is just a Hori PC controller, not the new Steam controller.

      It's like 25% clickbait. My opinion is that because Valve does not currently sell a first party controller, the Hori controller is the current standard they have set. I would much rather have a Valve first party controller.
