OVERSEEDING PASTURES using your livestock to get better stands.

  • Our preferred way of over-seeding pastures is using our livestock. Getting better stands of forages with less time. We are no longer frost seeding or no-till drilling into our permanent pastures due to the great success rate of mimicking mother nature.

    We nowadays on our dairy grazing farm use gras mixes clovers, Plantago, millefolum, Cichorium and Parsley, but it still needs some overseeding every 4 years. We may not have the highest production of milk now, but it saves us a lot of costs on fertilizer, minerals, and healthier cows will always save you time and veterinary costs.

    Very informative, thanks. I heard that a bath in tomato juice is good for getting rid of skunk smell. You could probably dilute it some, put it in a washtub and bathe each dog in it separately. Maybe use some dog shampoo at the same time to work up a shampoo/tomato juice lather. That's what I'd do.

    We have 21 acres, 8 in pasture that has been neglected for a decade. And 13 acres heavily forested with significant shrub. We raise Gloucestershire Old Spot pigs in the forest. Goats, and poultry in tractors moved each day. Looking for something we can plant under the trees in heavy shade to combat the weed growth and act as fodder for the pigs. And pasture seed mix’s preferably perennial. Would love your thoughts and advice. Thanks for making the videos.

    • @RussWilson
      @RussWilson  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I broadcast a lot of seeds it a timing thing. You want the soils to be wet till the seeds get rooted well. Its usually early spring and early fall that works best. Seeding rate depends on how many plants you need to fill in areas. I'll use any where from 10 to 20 pounds of seed to the acre. Thanks for watching!!!

    Two years too late but, Chlorine Dioxide, also known as Miracle Mineral Solution or MMS is good for deodorizing purposes.
    It worked on a neighbors house after a kitchen fire.
    It has a learning curve to it.
    It is strongly alkaline as I remember. Thus, it can cause a chemical burn.
    It can be diluted to different strengths (different levels of pH) for different uses.
    For a skunk sprayed dog, it would most likely be put to best use as a final rinse that is sprayed on their fur with a spray bottle, after the dog has been washed with shampoo.
    Might want to visit with a veterinarian first.
    Or a fireman.

    Do you think its possible to eliminate minerals for most of the year by having highly nutritious pasture....with a good mix of clover and forbs which are a lot higher in minerals than grass?

    • @RussWilson
      @RussWilson  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Doug
      This is my take on minerals. I don't think you could completely eliminate minerals. In my area the soils are naturally deficient in selenium, magnesium, phosphors, etc. We pull forage samples send them away for testing and adjust to the deficiencies in the forage. The minerals required by the cattle today is half of what it was when we started the adaptive grazing. Mineral deficiency in animals don't happen over night. They happen over a period of time. That's why I try to keep minerals in year round. We had selenium and copper deficiencies in the cow herd years ago. Trust me you don't want that. It costly and devastating the herd. We learnt from our mistakes. Minerals are our highest input on the farm. You are right having diversity in the sword definitely makes a difference example: from some of our test New England Aster high zinc, Cup Plant high in calcium . My take away from this is more the biodiversity the better off you'll be.
      Thanks for Watching hope this helped. Have a great day.

      Don't use on dark rug. First put down paper towels and absorb what you can of the urine. It needs to have similar quantities hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, tablespoon of dish liquid, in a bowl, non metal, but you can use metal utensil to get it started mixing. Let it sit for a couple of minutes then pour it on. You can use a plastic brush to circle around into your problem area. After a few hours you might want to remove with a dustpan and let the rest dry and vacuum. You will find your own way. For small areas you may want to adjust, especially the soap, a little goes a long way
