Well that doesn't apply to me because no one wants to jam with me cuz I don't know s*** right. Now if they would give me a chance to let me jam with them sit down and learn it I would but by myself my mind would not do it I'm trying the best I can by myself but still it's not good enough I wish it was better but you do what you got to do

I watched a video of Jake E. Lee explaining how in the day everybody would learn the same song but they all learned it differently, it made each guitar player unique and have their own style instead of a guitar world where there's no variety. Sound advice.

The part that grabbed me the most in this video, is where you talk about the guitar players in the crowd and said" I'm the one on the stage" referring to players who are too critical. That statement is very true and powerful. A lot of proficient players who can play note for note end up not playing in bands or live. Either because they can't gel with other players, lack the Grove or right attitude, or are simply afraid of shitting the bed and being harshly critiqued themselves, because that's what they do. This video is caulked full of awesometisity!!

I grew up through the 80’s Metal era and I miss it. It’s great to see some of those bands making a comeback . You play it the the way you feel is comfortable to you. No one should criticize someone’s else’s guitar skills. The difference is, they are down in the audience and you are on stage. There’s a reason for that. It’s easy for someone to watch and say, he’s not playing it right. Keep doing what you do. Keep on Rockin, 🎸🔥👍

This is so cool to see. I'm completely self-taught and when this album came out, there was no TH-cam or anything to show me how to do it and I learned it exactly that way! In the second and third fret position because that's the easiest way to do it and it made the most sense to me. Most natural. Every time I played that for a friend, they look at me strangely like what? Lol.. I'm so glad you posted this, I feel vindicated.

Explained like a true musician. I think a lot of players forget about octaves and that they are in multiple places on the neck. I put up a cover video of this song and I always played it like Warren did. But as you stated, even Warren doesn't play it the same every show he does. To be honest, I totally forgot about that other position on the neck where it can be played and it's literally the same notes, same chords, just different position. I can see where playing it that way makes it much easier to sing as well. Also, one other key thing said here is make it your own. I humbly agree.

I agree. You can put way too much time into learning note for note for the 1% that might notice. Like someone else said, those of us in the old school crowd didn't pick up music videos that show how to play stuff. We had to play everything by ear. We didn't slow it down to learn it either. Just get it as close as you can and try to have fun with it. Life is hard enough. By the way, playing something in an easier position is actually smarter, in my rule book.

IMO, (1) the studio cut version is played in the position you're playing it towards the headstock. The reason why I think so is because of how bright it sounds in the recording. When you play it in the middle of the neck, the sound is heavier and more muddled, which doesn't work as well for those suspended notes on the lead strings. You want those suspended notes to cut through in the studio cut, and the best way to do that is to play it near the headstock as you play it.
Even if they were playing on super light gauge strings, I still don't see how they could get that bright tone playing those chords in the middle of the neck.
I've seen bootleg videos of them playing it where you're playing it as well. Probably when they're getting tired, it's easier to play it where you're playing it.
    (2) IMO, the reason why they play it in the middle of the neck in the music video and live is because it's harder to be jumping around and dancing while playing chord progressions near the headstock, because your arms are stretched out more, and it puts more stress on the ligaments in your fret hand, and shortens the reach.
Playing it in the middle of the neck reduces these problems and therefore you can play it more accurately there while throwing some showmanship into your performance at the same time.
IMO the way you're playing it is indeed how they recorded it.
    (3) This might sound like I'm trying to be ugly, when I'm just stating facts. Stephen Pearcy never has been the greatest live singer. Playing those chords in the middle of the neck fattens up the sound to the point where it makes it harder for Stephen's horrid live singing to cut through the live mix. ...basically it serves the purpose of helping to drown out Stephen's less than stellar live singing.
Robin Crosby even said Stephen wasn't a great singer. This is a close to exact quote I heard him say, "It's a good thing the girls like Stephen because they would've never been as big if it weren't for that because Stephen can't sing live"
Like I said before, not trying to demean anyone, the bootlegs on TH-cam prove this.
    ..

  • @kylethestyle
    @kylethestyle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

There's a slight difference in timbre between the two ways shown here. It comes down to preference, really. Playing the barre chord style sounds "chunkier," or "meatier," while playing the riff with the open chord sounds "brighter." I personally prefer the meatier sound, but would probably play the riff in the open chord style live as it's more efficient; especially if you're singing while playing.

This is the first time I’ve came across your video. I enjoyed watching you play. I’m not a guitar player. I’m a drummer at heart, but your long hair caught my attention watching your video you were great I love your basic tactics. You used like a normal person sitting across talking to me. I’ve been wanting to do some TH-cam videos, but I was worried about the haters out there, but watching you makes me wanna say F___ all of them and just have a good time making them.
Happy New Year’s, and thanks to people like you that are keeping rock ‘n’ roll alive!

Critics are typically people who can't do it for whatever reasons.
People who like to feel or appear more important or knowledgeable or even interesting than they really are.
Ive known enough of them to know their game and avoid them.
Many years ago I had constant critics when I was in bands, because I never had a lesson, and learned by ear, which takes more work than people realize.
So I stopped doing covers and just wrote my own stuff and then no one could tell if I was playing it "right" or not, but they liked it.

I was 16 when Invasion of Your Privacy came out & was in a band. Back then I had to rewind tapes, listen with headphones and really take time to breakdown leads or in this case a riff. I knew it was drop D from previously learning about that tuning cover VH songs from Fair Warning and also Ratts Lack of Communication. So learning by ear and a little from the MTV video back then, I played it pretty much like DeMartini played it.

This is the most real, honest and true video I have ever seen on TH-cam regarding guitar playing. Especially playin in cover bands doin what you love. Nice job. Good luck to you and hope to find you on tour sometime, somewhere!!

Cool! I learned it the way you did, I couldn't do the wide stretch. But I think it was more for visual but what do I know. Thanks 👍🏼

Well it comes down to what your ears hear and how the brain perceives how it's done. If your fingers are reproducing or replicating what your ears hear what makes it wrong if you are not playing it the same exact way how who recorded it did it

Excellent version for anyone who has trouble stretching for that song and I totally agree with your perspective on playing. Subscribed.

Did you play in Motley Crued for the fake-a-palooza 2 in Bakersfield? My wife and I had to go around the back of the stage to get to the VIP area and I remember running into Nikki Sixx
