these are the kind of scenes that add so much depth to character relationships and really make us care about them. these "slow", quiet moments to breathe enrich a fantasy adventure show like this more than they get credit for. unbelievable that these were cut

Well, I mean, technically, canonically it is all the way platonic. However, their dynamic might be one of the very few canonical friendships that I totally see why people ship romantically
6:48 this scene is gold in my view and I wished they had kept it in. Bradley does a stellar job in conveying his exasperation of being left to his own devices. the outrage at the notion of dressing himself (to be fair, not 'dressing' in simple clothes like we do; everyone needs help into chainmail or plate armour and all the other stuff beneath and above it) was priceless. he even looked for Merlin in the stables. I can see him check on Merlin in his chambers or the armoury, but the stables too? maybe Merlin is in the tavern? 😋😏
i loved the scene between gwen and arthur, it says a lot about how arthur is thinking that we mainly know about thru context clues, not thoughtful, emotional dialogue. especially the bit when he mentioned he was being blinded by fear and then morgana saying how brave that is. its an important message as well

I did see someone's take somewhere that when Arthur says "Does he expect me to dress myself?" it's just an excuse to cover how worried he really is for his manservant. How nice would that be if it were true?
Absolutely amazing and heart-capturing, especially the moment where Arthur gave Merlin the sigil of his mother, it is as if he was saying: ”Please accept this token (gesture) of my honesty and affection, and know that i will always love you”. I envy them, the characters they play and actors themselves. 😢 What i wrote above, is my personal opinion, everyone should interpret it as they want (as they see fit).
3:16 the scene with Gwen and Arthur in the hallway was probably cut solely because of time restrictions. however, to discuss such a sensitive topic in the hallway does ring a bit silly too. 4:33 this scene is quite heavy stuff psychologically. father-son relationships and possible similarities between the two. maybe the ending didn't feel right. 6:28 this surely was cut for time only. it didn't really add something to the ep and was a filler in case it was needed
There's some amazing fanfiction still being written that runs the gamut from camp to adventure to tragedy, taking a deep dive in exploring all the characters, including the dragons (the idea of Gwaine helping Merlin raise Aithusa is so cute, and Aithusa never goes off with Morgana to suffer as she did).
These deleted scenes really should have been left in. That scene between Arthur and Gwen, in the corridor, where he said it’s time to step out of that shadow; he had no idea just how deep and long that shadow really was. His own father used magic, via Nimueh, that birthed him into the Pendragon family. He did find out from his own mother in an encounter that was made possible by magic, but he eventually rejected that “knowing” with a few words from Merlin himself in order to stop him from killing his father for hypocrisy and the resulting murder of innocent people accused of doing the same as he had done.

Also that scene in which Arthur tells Gwen, point blank, that he doesn't believe that all sorcerers are evil? Probably wouldn't have fit within the context of the show, especially considering Arthur's constant ping-ponging back and forth between "magic's evil" and "magic isn't evil" and its frustration among fans, but it is such a special line! We've never heard him say anything so blatant about magic.

Back then proposing was all done and arranged by parents or guardians in the noble and rich upper classes. A prince or son of rich parents usually would have nothing much to do with the decision or arrangements, which would usually have been made before hw was 12 year old.
7:11 this scene is great in itself but when you compare it with the actual 'indecision/doubt' scene Arthur already had prior to an arranged marriage that was supposed to take place, then it isn't that great anymore. anyway, looking forward to a compilation of deleted scenes from s5. 😊

There is something utterly unique about the (seycaight) non-romantic intimate true love between two men. I say it so as not to confuse it with gay love because they are different. Its like 2 souls bonded together. You know that you can count on them to watch your back, to trust your secrets etc. Unlike a gay relationship or a straight relationship between a man and woman, there are no role expectations. This relationship between Merlin and Arthur show two men can love each other and its sort of like their both bonded in the same march into the future, the same quest, etc. The thing is before being gay became a thing, this platonic intimacy between two men was normal. No one gave it a 2nd look. Two men living together. Two women living together. Their just companions sharing expenses and frankly it fit their definition because the purpose of marriage was to rear children so if you a couple and werent raising children then you were just companions. In the civil war, Abraham Lincoln slept in the same bed with his General(s) and in one letter back to his wife he said Abraham Lincoln has the best legs (or something to that effect). Somehow thanks to Fraud we have pathologized sex. Today everything has a sexual component to it. Prior to Freud, very little had a sexual component to it. Sex was sex. Thats all it was.

I'm rewatching the show while he's watching it for the 1st time, and I'm tearing it apart for all the plotholes and missed opportunities, but it is scenes like these that make is so worth it at the end of the day. But then Eoin Macken had chemistry with pretty much everyone (well, not Uther or the dragons or Gaius).
I've only just discovered this show, and I absolutely love it. I'm watching season four right now. Arthur has just been crowned. The series got really dark and sad really fast. I'm loving seeing the relationship between Arthur and Merlin, grow.
Lancelot would have lived if they'd only realized that it's a blood sacrifice that was needed, not a human sacrifice. There's a fanfic story in which Gwaine chucks a live rat into the Veil and all the guys live.
