Isn't the principle "if you don't understand a gambit don't accept it" ? I would just have played d4 automatically.

I found helpful the idea of queenside kasteling if white after 0-0 kg4 doesn't play "something" but the imho natural move 8. d4, for to take back with the queen if black knight takes in the next move.
So, what would you say would be White's best defence against this attack? It seems to me that Black's attack is possible just because the white king is stationed on g1. If I were playing White, my instinct would tell me to accept the gambit, take as many pawns as Black is offering me, then develop my queen side and castle there. Castling queen-side should stop Black's attack dead in its tracks, unless I'm missing something. Does this sound like a good plan? Or would White be better off just declining the gambit in the first place? Or none of the above (in which case, what else)?
I think in the first variation pawn a6 needs to be played or they’re just gonna pin your knight with their bishop. The question is is there enough time to do that when you’ve already gambited 2 pawns

The Benkö Gambit is pretty sound indeed and, surprisingly, so is the Von Hennig-Schara Gambit. But I agree that this version of the Scandinavian is only worth playing in bullit chess. The King's Gambit is only exciting when Black cooperates (I've played it myself in corr. games). Eg 1.e4 e5 2.f4 d5 3.exd5 exf4 is a lot less fun. Mainstream gambits like the Marshall Gambits in the Ruy Lopez and the Triangle (1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c6 4.e4) are so good that many GMs have played them. So they're very heavy on theory.
Study tactics and checkmate patterns, also analyze your own games to learn with your mistakes. In the opening just try to develop your pieces, you don't need to memorize a lot of moves to play good chess
Learn about material advantage, versus time, space, and pawn structure advantages. Also, Learn how to best make the board favor your minor pieces (knights and bishops). If you know just that much, you're easily 1000 elo. With a little tactical acumen, you can easily be 1300 before you should really NEED to learn openings.

The more solid lines are still important to know if your opponent simply refuses to take the third pawn.

May be its working under 1100 or so, did not work for me either. Stockfish is showing 2.0 already to weight after pawn sacrifices.
