Installer, and builder with my not so humble opinionsin order😅.
No cabinets in corners, very expensive to accessorize.
All drawers in base cabinets, except for mixer lifts.
Cutting board inner drawer with debris hole ,above pullout trashcan. Instead of paper towels,or saran etc because of garbage smell transfer.
Toekick vacuum gor a quick sweep/cleanup.
Counterdepth extra long upper in angled corner (when you violate #1) ,a door in the middle directly above counter became an appliance / dry ingredients appliance garage.
Closed handles so they don't catch on clothing.
Flank stove with spice rack on 1 side, cookie sheets on the other.
They can be as narrow as 5 inches.
    Really enjoy your videos!

For my money nothing is better than a $100 metal baker's shelf that fits in the garage adjacent to my kitchen. Easy access to all baking pans, casseroles, and countertop appliances (air-fryer, deep fryer, mixer, crockpot, etc.)

I have the pan/ cutting board organizer and it’s awesome for me. I invested in the rev a shelf double trash can pull out and it’s really good too. I put pull out drawers in all of my lower cabinets. I spent the money to buy quality ones and I have no regrets so far. I am going to replace one cabinet in my kitchen completely with a large pantry cabinet. I’m debating buying a large pantry system to put in rather than individual pull out shelves. The pantry systems are very expensive, however and the individual pull out shelving is more versatile. I put a little spice organizer in one of my drawers and that was life changing. I had them in an upper cabinet on a tiered shelf and I could never see all of the spices I had and they would always fall out on me. Now I can access them and actually see what I have.

My understanding is that Brits put clothes washing machines in kitchens largely because many people live in buildings that pre-date indoor plumbing, and there either isn't a space for a separate laundry room or plumbing another room for laundry appliances is difficult and expensive, and the practice kind of stuck even for newer buildings.

I don't think appliances in Europe are as expensive as the very high cost of energy to run them. Europeans don’t have the luxury of living in a 4,000 sf house as many of us do here, spaces are limited, and you find washers as part of the kitchen appliances, and most of them cannot afford to have a dryer due to the very high energy cost.

Im going to put a washer/dryer in my kitchen because theres no room in my bathroom and i don't want to have to run more pipe than i need to. Previous owner put in a pantry that is a weird shape because part of it is accessable in the kitchen, and the other part is accessable in the bathroom, im going to remove the part in the bathroom and put a stacked washer/dryer in that space. Might keep the door on it so i can clean out the dryer lint catcher easier. I have a linen closet so i don't need another cabinet in my bathroom.

In Sweden it is the bathroom that is the room you put your washer and dryer if you don’t have a special laundry room. Its safer as the bathroom have sealing layer that the kitchen doesn’t have.

I live in a house that's 115 years old. I don't know when the kitchen was built but it is very basic with lots of deep shelves. I've outfitted them with a variety of pull out products from Lynks. They are very well made, easy to install and have held up beautifully for the 3 years that I've had them. They have made those nasty and accessible shelves into useful, functional and organized storage. I highly recommend them.

Hint: also look at the comparative DATES on the good & bad reviews. Often what was a good product has had a lapse in quality - or a product with problems has had those problems fixed in production. If the older reviews cite poor quality, but the more recent reviews cite good quality - they likely improved their product in response to those first reviews.

20:55 I have no first-hand experience with the knife blocks, but I have seen them in displays.
As I recall, though, when _America's Test Kitchen_ reviewed knife storage systems, they indicated that type works well at first, but with wear and repeated use with proprtly sharpened blades the plastic bristly things become less effective because the knives cut the bristles.

For pans and other flat items, push to open drawers under the base cabinets are a great idea. I'm building an MDF plinth for the base cabinets so that I can have have these drawers, instead of the more common adjustable plastic legs. By the way, nowadays Bob's more likely to be your aunt, rather than uncle. 😄

The British often put washers in their kitchens because they don't have room for laundry rooms in their flats, and their bathrooms are smaller than North American places. Usually, that means they don't have dishwashers.

Only catching this now, but I wanted to say that I really want one of those appliance lift shelves - for my ICE CREAM maker. I almost have the perfect bottom cabinet for one, where I don't need to have an electrical outlet inside, since there's one very nearby, but it just isn't deep enough. But, from my measurements, I think you can put some things underneath it.

Yeah. a bit pricey especially if you buy through a big box store

I can reach the bottom two shelves of my wall cabinets, but not the top shelf, so I use the top shelf to store rarely-used or backup items.
For instance, the top shelf in my Dish Cabinet holds my backup dishware. I live alone and don't have visitors, so I store daily-use dishes on the bottom shelf. The ones on the top shelf replenish daily dishes that break (the style is discontinued, so I check eBay for replacements)
If I need anything from the top shelves, I have a stepstool that lets me easily reach things.
Also, I store all my dry pasta in the wall cabinet over the fridge. I can only access the pasta with the stepstool, but this discourages me just enough to minimize my consumption of pasta carbs.
As for the base cabinets, I'm getting too old to be able to get down or up easily from the floor.
I got two metal pullout shelves (adjustable width!) off of Amazon and installed them on the floor of two cabinets so I could access the full depth of the interior. I left in the one full-depth shelf in each cabinet and use a large bin as a 'drawer' to hold and slide out the upper shelf storage. With tax, it was about $75 for the pair, from KIKIBRO. Critical interior dimensions were 22.5" D x 13.3" (adjustable out to 18.5") W.
The biggest problem is finding organizational aids that are renter-friendly.
I rent, so I can't install pulldowns in my wall cabinets. 'Technically', I shouldn't have the pullouts in the base cabinets, but I think I can disguise the 6 holes per base cabinet.
The cabinet run in my tiny galley kitchen is only 10ft. The stove is 24", the sink with lip is 24" and there's about 22" between the stove and sink where my microwave sits on the counter, set back 8" from the counter front edge. Beneath the microwave is the drawer base cabinet.
Obviously, there is almost no counter space, so what I've done is laid a 24"L x 18"W cutting board across the opened top drawer. It works. Remove the cutting board when in us to access the drawer contents (cooking utensils and gadgets).
Above the microwave is my Beverage & Cereal Cabinet (access to water from the sink, drinking vessels in the Dish Cabinet to its right, and microwave underneath). Inside the door of the Bev/Cereal Cabinet I've mounted a magnetic bar, which holds my prep knives (chef, paring, bread, boning, and santoku). The door opens facing the stove (on the left), so I also hang my potholders above the knives, for use with both stove and microwave.
Recently, I bought and easily installed a lidded trash bin from Ikea INSIDE my sink base cabinet. Floor space in my 320sf studio apartment is at a premium, so having the trash bin inside the sink base is a real winner. It pulls out like a shelf for filling and emptying and holds a 13-gal trash bag. The sink base has two doors, and the bin fits easily through the lefthand door.
It's the Ikea HÅLLBAR with pullout/light gray, 6 gallon. Runs about $36.
It can be installed with a few screws through the bottom of the cabinet floor or it can be adhered in place with provided tape (renter-friendly).
You can leave a rating without writing a review; looks like the Rev-A-Shelf was only reviewed by satisfied customers.
I usually consider Amazon purchases by the quantity of reports, the percentage of stars (70% 5-stars minimum, 80% or better referred), the reviews from 1-star then moving up, and the response for most recent reports.
Recent comments will tell you if the quality of the product or customer service has fallen.
I'll never need an appliance lift; I've downsized all my appliances since I live alone and have too small a freezer to store leftovers.
My slow cooker is 3.5qts, my Zojirushi rice cooker is 3.5 cups, my food processor is 3 cups, and my KitchenAid stand mixer is a 3.5qt Artisan model. Everything else is quite light, even my Bella rocket blender. I never used my multi-cooker so I gave it away.
Luxury small appliances worth the money:
-any Zojirushi item (rice maker definitely, maybe their bread maker).
-Breville items (I have one of their mid-range toaster overs; so good!)
-microwaves are starting to do more than just microwave (some will grill, some will air fry, and some will do convection cooking). I'm waiting for when Microwaves will include toasting, which even the MW/grill can't do yet.
I don't see the need to spend big on blenders; my inexpensive Bella can grind seeds and crush ice just fine.
Juicers can be found for under $50 that will handle any fruit or veg put in it.
If you do espresso, you can easily drop big bucks and it'll be a show piece.
I spent big (-ish) on a countertop ice maker. I don't have room enough in my freezer for ice trays or even storing ice, and I REALLLY depend on ice in my drinks. So, every year or so I drop $100 on an ice maker (they're fragile machines and break down pretty quickly). They all seem to be made by the same manufacturer, with different brand names slapped on the front, but they all look and work the same. Still, the cost is worth it to me.
Related to the subject of small appliances:
    STORAGE IDEAS.
I came to realize that having so little storage or counter space in my tiny kitchen meant I was storing my appliances deep in my cavernous base cabinets. That meant 'out of sight, out of mind'. I wasn't using them because I wouldn't think to use them. Plus, when I did, it was an ordeal to dig them out and lift them to a counter.
I now have them in a qtr-round metal shelf in a corner of the kitchen. I can easily see them, and they're easily accessed for use.
    Additional storage ideas:
    -appliance lift
    -appliance garage
    -appliance nook
-open or curtained base-level shelving (shelving units)
-specialized 'station' (baking, hot beverages, etc)
    Dish Organizers:
I have the $19 Orz plate and dish organizers (sold as a pair). It's just me, so they do for daily meals.
I have a variety of risers for various-sized prep/mixing bowls and serving dishes.
My hot beverage mugs hang from a slip-on row of cup hooks (renter-friendly); my mugs hang from under the Dish Cabinet, over the sink.
I have a paper towel holder that's a similar configuration to the Usmascot undercabinet paper towel holder on Amazon ($4.25), however I don't use it the conventional way.
You're supposed to slide it onto a bottom shelf and load it from the single end that sticks out from the wall or backsplash.
I slipped it over the top of the door of my narrow 'Flavor Cabinet' wall cabinet (oils, spices, sauces, vinegars, gravies, etc), which allows me to lower the roll onto the holder. The door handle limits its movement and it's in easy reach from the stove on its right and the fridge on its left.
I have no available wall space in my kitchen.
I have no space available under my wall cabinets to mount a paper towel holder except over the sink, which is obviously a bad place to put it.
I have no space available inside any cabinets, whether wall or base.
I did get a magnetic spice/jar shelf that had an optional paper towel (or parchment/clingfilm/foil roll) holder, but the only place to put it was on the fridge and it either interfered with prep on the counter below or the cabinet door swing above.
I think hanging it outside the wall cabinet door is a good compromise; it works well AND it's renter-friendly.
Keep in mind Microwaves need rear (and sometimes also side) venting space. You can't just enclose a microwave in a cabinet and think it's safe. Between the heat and the moisture (and the probable mold) and the electrics, this can be a safety issue.
The sink base interior liner is not so great if you're installing interior drawer units.
I have my trash bin on its pullout drawer track that wouldn't be stable adhered to the liner or would have its watertightness compromised if it was screwed in. Same with the two-tier drawer unit I have installed on the other side of the sink base.
What I think is a necessity are these:
-replumbing to move pipes to the rear of the sink base cabinet, which would open up storage space.
    -installing a full-width, full-depth roll-out drawer/platform, so full access be had by the physically-challenged.
What every older person needs in their kitchen are anti-fatigue mats in front of their base cabinets. THICK ones. HEAVY-DUTY (not soft) ones.
I have these and they are HEAVENLY.
As you age, the natural cushioning in your feet thin out. Before long, it feels like bone-on-flooring, and it's painful.
    Those mats make a difference.
They're PRICEY (for good ones), but worth it.
I like the idea of storing flat items (baking sheets, cutting boards, etc) under raised bottom pullout drawers.
What do think of the recent movement to make toe kicks into pullout drawers?
Why do Brits have washers in their kitchens?
Plumbing. And the age of the buildings.
The washers are post-build installations, and it's better to put a water-using appliance near to where current water pipes and sewage draining already exists.
That, and the living spaces are so small that there isn't much other places to put them. And then we're back to the cost of new plumbing again.
Glasses would likely not break if the drawer was soft-close.
    Paper towels under the sink:
A full-width tension rod at the top of the sink base opening can be passed through the paper towel tube while the rod can also be a place to hang cleaning bottles by their spray nozzles.

I have the Rev-a-shelf three-tier blind corner base pullouts it is the best purchase I’ve made for my kitchen.
I always thought if one has a lot of upper cabinets, it would be cool to have a long, thin grommet that would install on the underside of a wall cabinet that would give a clean opening to feed the paper-towel roll housed inside the cabinet.

This has been one of my favourite videos you have made, particularly because we are building a new house and your kitchen ideas are wonderful. I will for sure be installing a paper towel holder in a drawer. I agree with you. It is one of the most difficult, ugly things to figure out, if it’s left on the counter and I love your idea of putting a mat under the sink and the pull down shelves and appliance shelf if I can fit, I’ll be adding them all great job. I’m thinking of putting my microwave in a drawer. What do you think of that? I’m not getting any younger, and I’m trying to figure out the nicest safest place to put a microwave. We only use it to heat things up and melt things. but I have scared myself a few times taking hot soup out of the microwave so this kitchen I want to put it in the best place. I like the performance and look of the DASH Clear View toaster, an ATK "best buy" (in other words, almost as good as the top pick, but substantially less expensive).
An endearing quirk is that it has a very strong pop-up spring that can send your toast airborn like in an animated cartoon, but I am usually standing by with my catcher's mitt, and if I miss my Norwegian Elkhound (also and by pure coincidence named DASH) is usually standing by for any wild pitches.

    6. Circular rotating tray for canisters and butter (yes, I keep my butter at room temp all the time). Sits in corner, is pretty, and everything is accessible
    7. Knife block with scissors
    8. Tall pantry cabinet that is 12" depth max (skip the walk in if space or use for stocking up on paper products)
    9. Task lighting -- I eliminated upper cabinets over counters to improve the aesthetic, add art and improve lighting
    10. Hidden moulding lighting. Those cans and pendants are not good as I'm sensitive to those bright beams of light
    11. Big apron sink (single basin) -- I use a washtub when I need to wash/rinse separately
    12. Microwave mounted under cabinet
    13. Spice shelving next to fridge. Please label expiration dates on all spices and food in freezer
    14. Trash Compactor next to sink
    15. Filtered Water Station between sink and fridge -- I drink tea so this space between fridge and sink is the best design
16.Mount vertical paper towel holder to right of sink (I'm right handed)
    17. Towel drying rack mounted on wall and to left of sink to dry dish towels. Side mote, I use the dishwasher to hold hand-washed dishes and I only run it during parties
    18. Quietest dishwasher available
    19. Corner cabinet lazy-susan for blind corner! So annoying to have wasted space
    20. Double oven and air fryer oven built into cabinet -- no gaps for crumbs to collect
    21. High end sink faucet with a powerful pull-out sprayer
    22. Backsplash that extends 12" or more above counter
    22. Laptop in kitchen for recipes and is easily accessible. I stopped using cookbooks and saved my fav recipes to an program I wrote myself. Plus I can play music or videos while I work in the kitchen
    23. liner under sink in case of leaks. much cheaper than replacing cabinet
    24. do not buy fridge with ice maker, ice dispenser nor water dispenser. Takes up space and they break! I buy ice from McDonalds and pour into a bucket in fridge with a metal scoop. I refill my water bottles with filtered water

I only place light items on high shelves. That way if they fall out it’s not a big deal.
I really like the racks to store baking trays etc.
In general I find a lot of these things take up a lot of room in the cabinets. While that might be worthwhile in some instances, I prefer the space. And I really hate wire shelves

Overall, it's a great idea. Be aware that shelves tend to be more work due to dust and keeping them tidy. Many people don't like them for this reason. They do create a nice open feel to the space.

We're opting for (virtually) all-drawer lower cabinets - with the only exceptions being in the cabinet under the overhanging counter of our peninsula (where box-bottomed pullouts with railings make much more sense) and under the sink (though even there, we'll likely opt to add some sort of post-installation box-bottomed pullouts on both sides as well).
In one case, we're also going for an inner drawer within another drawer - right under our cooktop where a fairly tall and wide (30") drawer for heavy pots & pans will have a shallow internal drawer to lay out all our cooking utensils in the handiest possible place. Other than that, internal drawers-within-a-drawer made less sense to us since they'd lose us more horizontal width and depth (and cost more) than a separate external drawer would...

    • @MTKDofficial
      @MTKDofficial  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I am all for drawers only. I don't mind the hidden drawer idea either! When it comes to a base cabinet, I think it should be a drawer bank. The only thing to consider is if you need that cabinet for something specific that a drawer wouldn't work for (appliance lift or pullout spice rack).

Stacked dishes can have a problem if the bottom of your dishes are not smooth, bottom of one impacts the one you stack it on. I use a rack which puts my plates vertically. Works fine for me.

@steveLP washers in the kitchen was due to regulations. I think has to do with how dangerous boilers/ water heaters were, and electrical dangers. similar with non mixing taps saw a history video on utube a while back explaining it. So it could still be done bc of regulations or now out of habit/culture.
had seen a video of a house for sale in Canada or the usa w a washer and dryer in the kitchen... very rare here for sure. could also be convenience not running waterlines to other spots, in some places in the USA they have their machines in a garage etc. I've seen a lot of washer and dryers seem to be in what were porches converted to inside spaces if they aren't in a basement.
I prefer a laundry rm,, and taps that premix- had the 2 separate taps in our old house hated it till we renovated.
    not mark btw.

    • @PeloquinDavid
      @PeloquinDavid 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

I dunno... They're awfully expensive, also lose you a lot of space on either side and in the back and are prone to having their contents bounce out - especially hard containers - if you jerk them too much. If you load them with heavy stuff, they can be hard to raise if - like me - you have rotator cuff issues or other upper-body weakness.
We've opted instead for maximizing both the volume and accessibility of our base cabinet and pantry storage using (almost) all-drawer cabinets (with a couple of pullouts in the middle pantry and below the sink but NO shelves of any kind below shoulder level) as the more economical approach.

Hi Mark, I prefer the paper towel roll out in the room instead of inside of a cabinet door. Raw meats and door pulls don't go together well. Mine is currently mounted vertically to the right of and over the kitchen sink. Dish towels to the left for when I am not concerned with contamination. Bob's our nephew, so we say "Bob's your nephew".

  • @PeloquinDavid

Wire pull-out accessories are OK, but they do waste some space - and stuff falls through the cracks WAY too easily and you often have to get on your knees to fish the stuff out again...
I prefer a tall, wide drawer (one is usually enough) to store baking pans, cookie sheets and cutting boards upright - but they probably do cost a bit more for equivalent storage volume.

    • @5610winston

Stuff falls through? Maybe use a place mat or a piece of veneer wood to bridge the spaces where you store smaller items.

@@5610winston I should probably have written "through and around" since I can't count the many times I've cursed container lids for having fallen out the sides - and back - of the wire basket.

@@5610winston I know what you mean (I'm in the same boat). In our reno, we're actively replacing low-access storage - especially below shoulder height - with a larger volume of higher-access drawers and (where necessary - i.e. in the pantry section and in the cabinet beneath our peninsula counter) box-bottomed pullouts.
While we're still going to have some upper cabinets with only shelves, they'll mostly be for things we don't use often (or for actual display of "pretty (but otherwise low-use) things" through a top row of glass doors with interior recessed LED lighting) and we'll rely mostly on our new/expanded high-access lower cabinets and middle pantry for things we use all the time.

UK viewer here! We put washing machines in kitchens because most homes don't have dedicated laundry rooms, and kitchens have the plumbing you need. I've been to other countries where space is at a premium (e.g. Japan) where they tend to be in bathrooms, so I suppose part of it is convention.

Pull down dish drainer - OMG and NOT a good OMG either. These were hugely popular here (I live in Israel) many years ago, but they've stopped doing them. Why? Unless you leave them down until the dishes are dry, the water from the wet dishes drips down and will RUIN the inside of your cabinet. Blech. Don't bother.

Since the apartment will be a bedroom and great room with bath, he wants to do tile for the bath and either LVP or laminated flooring for the rest.
