    This is where I disagree with you. If they downgrade your steam deck because "it runs the same" so they didn't need to tell you anything about it, then is it cheaper or does it cost the same? If it cost the same why do I want to buy the downgrade version and how do you see it as a win? WTH?

    Look, it is about the principle of the thing and about establishing patterns of behavior.
    They didn't tell us about the Delta Fan, we had to find that out on our own, they decided it was "good enough", the customer decided the high pitched whine is not good enough.
    Now they are messing with the SSD, without telling us (no, changing a line in a product page that people looked at a year ago when they made their reservations and purchase decisions is NOT informing your customer, not to mention that line wasn't even updated in the german translatio)... and now they are telling us again "it's good enough" without actually disclosing the full before/after specs.
    x2 / x4 is not that big of a deal, but what are they not telling you?
    I would like to know the MTBF on both SSDs for example. ...like half the expected lifetime is something that can EASILY be hidden and affect you once the device is out of warranty.
    I would just like to know for sure, because i'm not fanboying over brand name.
    Also, if you buy an Alienware pre-build (yeah yeah, i know, lol, hear me out, i could just as well make a car comparison!), you waited almost a year for it and then it arrives with a different fan that makes noise and a lower spec SSD that you didn't order, it is obviously a cheaper product than what you've paid for, of course the SSD manufacturer will ask more money for an x4 than an x2 device. ...you wouldn't accept this from Alienware, so why shrug it off here? It is just a PC.
    The problem is not that they are doing it, the problem is the lack of communication.
    (and for the record, i got my deck, i got the x4 SSD, but i got the Delta Tinitus Fan and that will cost me another 40€ and an hour or so of my life to replace that thing, that is if iFixit should ever get stock, and until then i will avoid playing the games that would stress the hardware all because somebody at Valve said "good enough". ...and that is with the updated Fan curve).
    Also, one day i'll be done with this Steam Deck, it could break, there might be a version 2 or whatever, the SSD is very easily something that can be salvaged for other purposes, this is not just some random internal component, this is storage that you can use anywhere else.
    And if you upgrade to a 1TB or 2TB drive in a year or 2 because prices drop... then you still can find a use for the 256 or 512GB SSD you got there, frankly i don't even care about Videogame loading times on the deck, i care if i can plug this into my unRAID server as a cache drive.
    LESS fanboy mode, more investigation please.

      This, and most SSDs don't really affect the "gaming performance" compared to one another, even if one is significantly faster. Mainly because it generally doesn't affect FPS, which is apparently the only gaming performance that matters.
      Slower load times are a worse experience and is worse for gaming.
      So unless the x4 SSD is the same speed as the x2 SSD (not unheard of, x2 is plenty fast for slower SSDs), its a downgrade.
      Communication would be nice

      This 10,000%.
      People are getting annoyed not because a minor change in the parts, but because Valve is simply sliding these in and from what it looks like, hoping that consumers don't notice.
      Also, hello from reddit 👋, I've seen your posts here and there.
      It's definitely a pattern here, Valve is trying to do things extremely quiet-like. It's inexcusable and not only makes the company look bad, but the community as well for trusting said company to deliver as intended.
      I worry about the PC gaming community, as if we're this complacent, other companies will definitely take note and start trying to cut corners.

      @@minarchisttrucker2775 That's the place ZeroB4NG's analogy falls apart, imo. We haven't preordered these devices, we paid $5 for a spot on the waiting list. We won't actually pay the hundreds of dollars until Valve has one ready for us, already manufactured, specs set in stone. It's at that point we can reevaluate its worth.
      Then again, people can only make such an informed decision if hardware revisions are made transparently.

    About the warning by Lawrence Yang: way back around the time of the review embargo getting lifted, GamersNexus found that the charging circuit got pretty hot and got significantly hotter with the case opened and the backside removed. This proves that Yang knows what he's talking about and that this warning is made honestly. Also funny how folk who've got their deck already are eulogizing when Valve "say" they are ramping up orders. Meanwhile... @Der-Kleine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Even if you are moving files on and off of the deck, I doubt it will ever really matter.
      1. Most typical methods of transfer (via a network, to an SD card) will never be bottlenecked by the SSD. The only scenario where I could see it maybe mattering would be to a fast external SSD via USB.
      2. Most file transfers will probably not be large enough for it to be any serious inconvenience. If a transfer was running at the maximum x2 Speed, chances are it'll still be done in a matter of seconds, a few minutes at most.
      3. Scenarios where you'd want to transfer large amounts of data like that are probably quite rare for the way you're typically going to use the steam deck. It's not a video-editing workstation ot something.
      4. How fast are the 2230 x4 SSDs anyway? I haven't benchmarked the one in my Deck, but I wouldn't be surprised if it tops out no where near the maximum x4 bandwidth.

      @trevorhaddox6884 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Were those SD load tests performed with the SD card removed and then inserted? I mean there is a small chance they could be doing something where load speed is throttled when an SD card is inserted at all. I highly doubt it but given their occational non-transparancy stains on their otherwise open information, it's still possible, though easily debunkable (which has hopefully been done).

    • @Pegaroo_
      @Pegaroo_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@trevorhaddox6884 Not having a deck yet to experiment with myself I can't say either way but several channels have done the tests with the 3 different models and sd cards in and out each of those models. If Valve were doing something fishy (limiting the speed if there's a sd card in) one of the channels would have found something because the happen to have done to ssd tests before ever putting a sd card in.
      However unless Gamers Nexus or Hardware Unboxed do the tests I will never be 100% sure the methodology was EXACTLY the same for all versions but with the number of channels that have done the tests I'm 95% sure Valve aren't playing tricks with load times.

      Not true for the Switch. Every other revision was better than the previous apart from the patched "HAC-001" [w/o "(-01)"] being the first revision requiring complicated mod-chip installations to run homebrew, non-fuse-blowing firmware updates (& as a result downgrades), alternative OSes and dem "high seas ROMs".
      The Lite arguably was worse for everything but the smaller form-factor, but that's not really a revision of the original Switch because "it does not switch" at many people noticed.

    3:30 The problem probably isn't the power draw of the SSD itself. If Yang is correct that the SD wasn't designed for the amount of power that 2242 drives draws, than SD shouldn't work for 2230 either. If you look up the specs, 2230 and 2242 power draw range is nearly identical, and there are 2230 drives that actually draw more power than 2242 and vice versa depending on manufacturer. SSD capacity also doesn't seem to have any baring on power draw according to the spec sheets I've seen, a 1 TB and 128 GB drive from the same model seem to carry the same spec. The charger IC is probably what will prematurely kill the Steam Deck. It's already hotter than what I would have liked to see.

    I posted this on Fan The Deck's own update video in which he mentions this, but I'll post it here. As someone who has been in the tech community for over 10 years, let me provide my 2 cents on the Steam Deck SSD situation, and in-general all of the hardware inconsistencies:
    As far as performance in games is concerned, even using an old hard drive will not impact performance 99% of the time; only in load times. There is the very rare exception where a game constantly executes read / write operations on the fly and constantly needs to load in textures from your own machine, but these games were incredibly rare even 5 years ago, and pretty much are nonexistent now (most games that need this typically stream such information over the internet instead, which does mean you need a decent connection but does not get impacted in any meaningful way by what drive it is on). Considering the performance capabilities of the Steam Deck, and considering that plenty of people play intensive games on maxed out settings on their mechanical hard drives just fine in expensive desktop PCs, I consider losing out on the lanes a non-issue even on the face of it. Even a single PCIe 3.0 lane is quite fast.
    Speaking in more detail, there's more to it than just lanes and PCI Express revision. The rest of the hardware on the drive could significantly impact the speed of the drive, and when comparing a crappy Gen 4 SSD to a really-good Gen 3 SSD, it is entirely possible for the Gen 3 SSD to win, despite the initial bandwidth disadvantage. What I have not seen anyone talk about so far is the rated speed of both drives, as it's entirely possible that they, for instance, switched from a 4Gb/s x4 SSD to an 8Gb/s x2 SSD, which apart from the physical lane limitations is very close to identical performance.
    Another thing to consider is that the 64GB eMMC models ship with a PCIe 2.0 x1 interface, which is significantly less bandwidth than a PCIe 3.0 x2 interface, and microSD cards are also typically even slower than this, and yet all of the testing done on microSD cards showed no issues with performance, so I would not be concerned about losing 2 lanes on a very fast drive, when the much-slower eMMC and microSD cards have been provably a non-issue apart from loading times (which still weren't too bad even on a microSD card).
    I 100% agree that there should have been more transparency about this change, but I would consider this adjustment a non-issue. The different fans, different SSDs, different RAM, etc. have all been decisions that I do not take an issue with. Such decisions are in-line with current-gen consoles (see PS5 for some examples of the exact same kind of thing), offer no meaningful performance change, and only offer the potential caveat of subjective distaste for the difference. The in-depth analysis of the Steam Deck fans done by Gamer's Nexus clearly shows that you would really only notice this when putting the two side-by-side, and Valve rolled out an updated fan curve that solved the noise issues for a large portion of people, so to me Valve has been succeeding for the most part here. I actually appreciate that Valve found a smart way to increase their supply chain amidst the shortages, by swapping parts in such a way so as to provide no significant difference in performance while providing Valve more availability so they can ship more units. Considering that they are probably either taking a loss or breaking even on every sale, I am quite impressed overall with how pro-consumer Valve has been this entire time. More transparency would have been great, especially when changes to what a customer is buying are made, but as far as the changes themselves are concerned, I am not in the least bit concerned.
    Hopefully this addresses some folks' concerns and puts some of the "drama" to bed. :)

      @Dracossaint 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      maybe the pcie drop is to give the usb c port more lanes?
      It also might be similar to how the deck was originally delayed, many feel it was the os not being quite ready that caused the delay. As someone who has a dock I can tell you it does not feel that great to use.
      Like there's some simple stuff that is quite silly they haven't addressed yet.
      For instance when I plug it into a dock, it'll still choose the steam deck as the primary controller even if I have an external one connected.
      It really should switch the external controller to primary without me having to go in and do it myself.
      The UI gets funny sometimes when you hook it up to a 1440p monitor but if you run the steamdeck UI through the desktop shortcut hack. everything scales just fine.

    I had thought (hopefully misunderstood) that the Steam Deck die maybe had minor faults (not all PCIe lanes working) but other than that functioning fine and that was how they were going to be able to increase production.

    Pretty easy to change the M.2 SSD anyway, so you can buy cheapest model then get way bigger SSD. You got the shield with the Steam Deck so there shouldn't be issues when it comes to wireless connections. PCIe gen 3 doesn't have big thermal issues like gen 4 has, so I seriously doubt it would be an issue. But it is possible to buy the model they use if that is what one wants to do.

    "If the performance is totally unaffected by this change as Valve suggests, then why should they mention it beyond updating the product page" - because it's fair to the end users. If they claim the performance is almost "unaffected", then they shouldn't fear going out with all the test results they've ran and they should perhaps justify why they went with this model over the other. And yes, besides the supply chain shortage, it's most likely the lower price tag, but they can at least be transparent about it, I don't think the customers would mind. Most of the customers already know that Valve is losing money on every sold unit (and yes, I know this is far from accurate, given they make more money by selling games on steam, which the Deck will significantly increase... but again, it's way more complicated than that).
    So to answer the **why**, it's to be more transparent, especially towards the potential customers who have been following the Deck from day 1. Just my two cents.

    My opinion on the SSD spec change is since there was a bottleneck elsewhere that it doesn't really matter. (Entitled PCMR would prefer a press release and price reduction, but business reality rarely works that way.) Hopefully, Valve will make their list of certified M.2 2230 publicity available so those who want to upgrade can do so safely! Maybe have ifixit sell them with instructions and recommended tools.

Gabe Newell may have to take a look at the first one, like battery Life and less fan noise but able to cool the system down while you game on the go or at home in bed if you wanted to. You missed the point entirely and I have just ordered my 512GB Steam Deck yesterday (after over a year of waiting) and I WANT to have the Gen3x2 M.2 in it.
    I am a member of the Glorious PCMR and I know for a fact that you wouldn't even notice a difference if there were an SSD in it instead of an M.2 in speed.
    The only think I am concerned about with a device like the Steam Deck is the temp - and not just the temp when it is new, but the temp after it has had time to suck in some dust.
    The Gen3x2 will create less heat than a x4 in use and that is a POSITIVE.

    Of course you don't care about the downgrade Gardiner. You have already received the correct top tier spec for free (unlike people like me who have not received my 512GB version Gen 3 x4 yet and will not get what they have reserved). I'm sure the majority of people "would not mind" if they got their deck for free or at a reduced cost/discount (if they received the downgraded version).
    But they don't give us that option. Steam Support stated and I quote from my e-mail: "We would recommend simply ignoring your invitation when the time comes and your deposit will be automatically refunded". They don't even tell you that the refund is added as Steam Wallet and not to your original payment method after 3 months. I made my reservation in October of last year, well over 3 month.
    I decided to cancel as it is no longer the "fastest storage" - FYI false advertisement IMHO. And have selected for the 64GB to upgrade the SSD to either 512 GB PCIE Gen 3 x4 and still be a lot cheaper than what I previously reserved or 1TB PCIE Gen 3 x4 and still pay around the same price of the 512GB version.
    Valve made me choose this route, not me.

    • @gardiner_bryant
      @gardiner_bryant  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chill out, dude. Yes, Valve sent me a review unit for free. But guess what? I bought the unit I reserved at full price knowing full well I might get a gen 3x2 NMVe instead of the 3x4.
      I don't care. Do you know why? Because valve says their extensive testing showed there was virtually no performance loss. And I trust their hardware team to know what they're doing.
      Gen 3x4 versus 3x2 is a meaningless difference for all but linear transfer speeds. And games are *not* linear in their IOPS.

  • @trevorhaddox6884
    @trevorhaddox6884 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Ok, stopping the vid right there. NO, we are not complaining it doesn't have an uber screen and the fastest drive ever in it just because we want to complain about random things. We want what we were promised, not less. PERIOD. If you go into a fast food place and order a "bacon cheeseburger" and it has less then half a single skinny slice of "bacon" on it, you'd be disappointed. Why should this not be much worse for high priced electronics? Us Q3 folks don't want to have to buy a new drive and have to immediately mod the system just to get ORIGINALLY ADVERTISED LOAD SPEEDS!

    • @gardiner_bryant
      @gardiner_bryant  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Load speeds are unaffected. It's linear transfer speeds that are ever-so-slightly diminished.
      Fact is, nobody noticed that this change had happened because it didn't impact real world gaming. And it means you'll get your Steam Deck sooner.
      And if you're planning to upgrade your SSD right out of the box, then you should not be buying the 256 or 512 models.

I know more Steam decks can be delivered. I want the Steam deck to thrive and continue to be the game changer. You do walk that fine line on making subtle changes to get decks out but at the same time brings the question what else could be changed. Just be straight with the customer that are drooling to get their steam deck. If you sacrifice quality just to make a buck that is not good for the customer.
