- If you want an automotive toy there are a lot of options out there that includes: motorcycles, ATVs, Dune Buggies, and Supercars. But if you want a daily driver you could opt for something like the Polaris Slingshot which is easily one of the most odd vehicles on the road today. The Slingshot is an autocycle which is part car part motorcycle. Prices start at $19,999 for the base model and rise up to $30,999 for the SLR LE model. The Grand Touring Luxury Edition seen here is priced at $29,999.
Under the hood is a GM sourced 2.4 liter Ecotec 4-cylinder that makes 173 horsepower and 166 lb-ft. of torque. The transmission is a 5-speed manual. Fuel economy is 28 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on the highway. There is not a whole lot to the interior. But being the top Grand Touring trim you get a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with Bluetooth and navigation.

That's not the high beams. It switches the interior foot well lights from white to blue at night.
Yeah, I saw that. He didn't even drive it at night probably and find out that the head light control is in the turn stalk.
Headlights looked like old incandescent bulbs instead of modern bright white led. The old headlights were so hard to see with at night...

We purchased our 2017 new and we now have almost 7000 miles on it and love it! We also have the Slingshade installed and love it, I might say when cruising with the wings down and LOCKED, the slingshade will make the audio a whole lot louder than without the slingshade top installed.We are from Iowa and we drive our Slingshot whenever the roads are clear of snow even in the winter. Some add on's - Slingshade, flashing fin light for stop light, key less start. " IF YOU DON'T OWN ONE YOU WON'T UNDERSTAND IT!"
How do they handle? I've seen reviewers give this thing hell because of its handling but I'm interested to know what an owner thinks of it. Is it something that I could track if I wanted to?
I drive 2017 SS every day the weather is good. You ask how does it handles, it handles just great! These people that says it crap either one they never drove one! I am 74 and this one is FAR FROM CRAP.
In fact I just got back from Rochester, MN driving interstate speeds and just having a great time. I might say using my cruse control. That hugged the highway just like our Corvette.
I don't race our SS, we drive it to enjoy the ride, and the pleasure of the handling on the road.
I don't own one but the second I saw it years back I understood it. It looks awesome in real life (I see them every several months) and an absolute blast to drive. I'd take one over a miata any day of the week. And for the money, I don't understand why anybody would take a spyder over one.

IF they develope military and law enforcement application's for this your government contracts would put million's of dollars in your bank.
Don't own one and don't want one. I will never own another Polaris product. Why? Well I do own a Victory motorcycle. The way Polaris handled the Victory and it's owners and is handling the owners with huge price increases on parts and the ever decreasing of service centres tell you that Polaris is a bottom line company and they have little to no loyalty to those who purchase their products. I have Victory accessories on my bike that cannot be replaced if needed because Polaris stopped production on all accessories and only grudgingly continues to make parts due to Government legislation. Unfortunately the legislation does not preclude doubling, tripling, or quadrupling the price of the parts they do have to supply. So the question is, will Polaris pull the pin on the Slingshot or the Indian when the margins don't meet their requirements? You betcha they will. They don't care about their customers, just their stock holders. As I pointed out to my dealer: I'm not a huge fan of Harley Davidson but I will say this for Harley. In over 100 years through thick and thin, good times and bad, Harley never left their customers in the lurch. I guess nobody told Polaris that Victory goes to those who keep on trying and never give up.

@@joem1950 Wonderful, I bought the 2020 R with only 1100 miles on it. It now has 5400 miles on it. It is a blast driving it. I had tried someone's automatic and hated it but the manual is a kick and I don't regret not buying another Harley at all.

Mario Koger I do have a paper stating that it is ok not to wear a helmet in California. As long as you have a top. Doesn't have to be fully enclosed. Once I find it I'll link it to you

Does the engine last as long as a regular car engine?
When is it considered high milage?
Cause cars can go over 200k miles, and motorcycles are considered high milage after 25k miles

Don't care what you say, the thing's ugly, really ugly. By the way, I own a Polaris 850 sportsman, so I'm a Polars fan. It seems to kind of like the Can am spider or the Harley bikes with those extra wheels on back so you don't fall over at the light. If you can't ride a bike, get a Honda spider. Awesome car, goes like crazy, when it rains put the top up and turn on the heater, they also come with A/C. Just sayin.
Anybody remember the days when you could go out on the street and drive around? Now it's just sit in traffic. I feel very fortunate I started driving in 72, the roads were wide open you could do pretty much anything you want it. Now you can't do nothing if the roads were empty because cops are always watching. But what happens is the roads are always jammed you can walk on top of cars better than you could drive. And that was started driving in 1972 in New York Long Island

They are junk, I work at a Polaris dealership and a tech, they are in are shop all summer, they suck to work on, the 17s had 6 or 7 recalls.. waist of money, if you dont got none...

I like the spider three wheeler and the slingshot because comes with a roof can you have special made special made plastic door for it.
So fugly. Jay Leno has a hombuilt vintage car called the shotwell special it has the looks but I bet something like the slingshot could be modified to look like it and give you a cool modern trike.

Your actually kinda wrong in California you do not need a helmet as of today to drive a slingshot as you can drive it with just a class C license. This includes the Cann Amm I don’t know if I’m spelling that correctly. The only exception to that is scooters.

this thing is ugly as it is, its even uglier with that roof on! the only thing that would save it is to add a fourth wheel and make it a quad maybe that would help hide that ugly back side. everytime I see these on the road they look like the riders are seating in repurposed trash dumpsters!!!

Right, only a couple states on the map for it required motorcycle endorsement. Love the concept and science fiction movie look, but this model probably isn't really good enough where it needs front wheel drive and better build. I thought it'd be motorcycle since US law usually classifies 3 wheeled cars as motorcycles and doesn't allow 3 wheel tuk tuks and auto rickshaws unless they're electric.

That is why I won't get one. With less than 10 percent of new cars being sold with a manual transmission, not having an automatic transmission limits ones customer base.

No because the car has three wheels if you have the power at the front wheels and steering for the front wheels it would be very weird and the rear wheel what is it gonna do? Also it has more stability with rear wheel drive than front wheel drive and it would be more likely to flip or roll with front wheel drive

I am having an extremely hard time deciding on a brand new 2021 or 22 model R model for considerably more money or a used 2018 SLR for around 23K with 4K mileage. I don't care too much about which can go faster but a used one would not have the top shade feature. I did test drive for a short ride someone who had an automatic and I didn't like it. It just felt funky to me and I think I would like the manual much better. Having far too much trouble deciding which way to go.
You do not need a Motorcycle License to drive a Slingshot in California. You do NOT need to wear a motorcycle helmet either, but you most certainly should.

Overall, The Styling is pretty terrible. It is a mess of angles and could be beautiful but his really just the opposite. This is the kind of vehicle that I would really like to own, but it's so darn ugly I won't.

Don't get it... $30,000. At this price point, you're passing up on light sports cars like the MX5, BRZ/FRS/GT86, and Fiat Spider. You're also passing up used heavyweight track monsters like the 6th gen Camaro and Mustang, and C6 Corvettes.
Sorry, I don't see the value. Plus it lacks and creature comforts, rides loud as hell, and you have to wear a helmet (and even if you don't have to you should, since these things hold up about as well as a tin can in an accident or rollover).
Actually, it's really quiet you're thinking of a T-rex, it has race seats that supports your lumbar areas, also it has plenty of creature comforts such as HD surround audio system, a rear camera system, full functioning GPS, a cell phone mount and two detachable rear components that double as suitcases. Also depending on state law helmets are optional.

How do you figure the Spyder is basically a motorcycle with a very narrow wheel base? The Spyder is 3 x as wide as a standard motorcycle. I don't get that logic.

If they put an LS1 motor with Brembo brakes in them, these things would sell like hotcakes.
I’d prefer it to be FWD, but other than that it’s a great designed vehicle. Also there are DOT approved half shell Helmets that would be less inconvenient to wear than the full face helmet the reviewer was wearing.

Every review I see complains about the weak brakes. How can they be so weak, this vehicle can’t weigh much?
