My 2019 ESh is the opposite when it comes to the kick sensor. Just kicking doesn't work; I have to make swirls 3x with my foot and perform the opening number from West Side Story before it'll open. It's one of the most annoying "features" of the car.

More than likely you are just standing too close to the vehicle, they use the same sensor.
