Navy Yard, Washington DC | Riverfront Walk | 4K | USA

Come check out the Navy Yard area with me. I this video I start walk from across the Nationals Stadium and Head towards the waterfront trails. After walking on the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail and through the Yards Park, I walk towards M street and end this walk in the Washington Canal Park.

The Capitol Riverfront is the place to be for Nationals games and picnics on summer days. It’s also where you can get some of the best food in DC.
From the late 19th century through World War II, the riverside blocks south of the U.S. Capitol were home to the industrial Washington Navy Yard, an area that has been reborn as a haven for sports fans, nature lovers and foodies. It’s a particularly sweet spot to visit in warmer months with recreational opportunities from paddle to park.

History of the area:
Historically, the Anacostia River was once a deep water channel with natural resources and home to the Nacotchtank Indians. In 1791 Pierre Charles L’Enfant designed the plan for Washington, D.C., and, recognizing the assets of the Anacostia River, located the city's new commercial center and wharfs there. In 1799 the Washington Navy Yard was established in the area. It was the nation's largest naval shipbuilding facility for several decades. Today the Washington Navy Yard is the U.S. Navy's longest continuously operated federal facility.
Navy Yard was Washington's earliest industrial neighborhood. One of the earliest industrial buildings was the eight-story brick Sugar House, built in Square 744 at the foot of New Jersey Avenue SE as a sugar refinery in 1797-98. In 1805, it became the Washington Brewery, which produced beer until it closed in 1836. The brewery site was just west of the Washington City Canal in what is now Parking Lot H/I in the block between Nationals Park and the historic DC Water pumping station.
The Navy Yard was a bustling nautical center during the 19th century and played an integral role in developing the area. The lively wharf was a hub for jobs, serving ships with lumber and raw materials for the growing city. It also played a key role in defending the city from the British during the War of 1812. Surrounding the wharves was an extensive commercial district, light industrial businesses, and one of the city's most significant neighborhood communities. As the city and nation evolved, the Navy Yard changed from shipbuilding to production of finished ship products and weapons ammunition. By the mid‑1940s, the Navy Yard and the expanded Annex area reached peak production with 26,000 employees in 132 buildings on 127 acres (0.51 km2) of land.
However, during the 20th century, the river deteriorated due to pollution. After World War II, the Navy Yard consolidated its operations to a smaller campus, which slowed the economic and neighborhood activity of the area. Furthermore, around this same time, the elevated portion of Interstate 395 was completed, creating a physical barrier for access to the river. The confluence of these factors led the riverfront neighborhoods to become neglected and overrun with crime.[2]
For many years, the neighborhood was home to eight LGBT bars and nightclubs that have since been displaced. Velvet Nation was a weekly dance event that took place at the nightclub Nation. The club, formerly known as The Capitol Ballroom, hosted musical acts such as The Ramones, Björk, David Bowie, Eminem, and Prince.

Canal Park is a 3 acre neighborhood-centric park that opened in 2012 as a model of sustainable design for an outdoor space. The park is home to seasonal markets and events, dancing fountains in the warmer months, and ice skating in the winter. After a year-long hiatus, the water features have now returned to Canal Park with the 42 water jets in the southern block on during designated daytime hours.

I should show my parents this, they think the Navy Yard area around nationals park is extremely dangerous and wont go there 🤦‍♂️

Absolutely! I have heard that the area used to be dangerous 4-5 years ago but it's so much better now. There are so many great restaurants, coffee shops, and ice cream shops. They can go for a nice walk in the park(s) and easily spend a good few hours exploring. I have been there 3-4 times in the last few weeks and it never felt unsafe. Metro is probably best way to get there, but there is street parking available as well. Eastern Market is also a very short walk if they want to check that out! :)

There are hoods around that area just have to be cautious outside the navy yard, keep your head on a swivel

It used to be a very dangerous housing project over there called Author Capper aka 501 boys but it was demolish and this is the new look of it, however there are still projects that surrounds the area one of the housing projects on the southwest side across the street from the baseball stadium is called Greenleaf Gardens Southwest and 106 and park and up the street is Potomac Gardens and another housing project called 1000 which is also on the Southeast side, But for the most part The Navy yard area is cool even though there were a couple of shootouts after the game at the ball park and one wrong turn can have you in the hood you should be OK lol
