Kenny Burrell is totally badass on his jazzbox. A master of rhythm, slippery leads, blues grooves and melodic twists all together. A real genius. Love him and Brother Jack McDuff on B3 together.
Thanx 4 posting this very nice bluesy swing with Kenny in this excellent small jazz combo format...always a favorable format allowing each member's voice to sing and Kenny'subtle virtuousity to "shine"!
oh gosh - Kenny is one of my favorite players of all time. What a fantastic player. He is always right on the money, ALWAYS. Just what is needed, and not more.
Sherman Ferguson is one of the best drummers I've ever heard. The work he did on the Consciousness album with Pat Martino and Tyrone Brown and Eddie Green was the best I've got in my collection. I've never enjoyed a drum break as much as the 2nd to last one on the tune "on the Stairs".
Reply (Jack Handy's question on the Gibson model). Looks like a Custom Super 400 from the fretboard position markers and the split diamond on the headstock and that Super 400 characteristic tailpiece. His has a florentine cutaway but you can also specify the venetian (rounded) cutaway. The Gibson L5 CES ( both pickups), also has the pickup selector switch in the cutaway.
Nice tune. Burrell original? Love the Milestones/So What contrast with the short adventeours bridge and return. Beautiful chord playing by Burrell. Also, thanks for identifying the bass player and drummer.
As for guitar there are many , but some of the people you should be aware of are: Eddy Lang, Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian, Freddie Green, Grant Green, Barney Kessell, of course Kenny Burrel whom you already know, WEs Montgomory, George Benson, Joe Pass, Pat Martino, John Mclaughlin and the list goes on and on. It's almost unfair not to mention at least dozens of others, but those are some of the big names
I would also add Tal Farlow, Howard Roberts, Billy Rogers, Bobby Broom, Henry Johnson, Russell Malone, Phil Upchurch, Herb Ellis, Birelli Lagrene and Larry Carlton
You sound like you know your jazz musicians. Could you give a novice some names to start with? I'm really into jazz but I know almost no names at all, especially when it comes to this sort of instrumental jazz.
Seems a bit rough on the solo. This tune needs a real liquid kind of solo. He seems to be banging around on it a bit. Running through straight blues lines...something doesn't gel.
Kenny is masterclass. I can´t stop hearing him...
Kenny Burrell is a treasure.

Today is his birthday!
Happy Birthday, Kenny!
You are a national teasure.
Never tire of hearing the genius of Kenny Burrell. One of the masters and his sound is all his own.
Isn't it just ridiculous? I've never heard that man play and not thought "WOW". And it just keeps coming too!
A lifetime of jazz guitar greatness!

Just such a great performance!!
Extremely wonderful playing which is routine for Mr. Burrell. I’ve been listening to him for sixty four years and continuing…!! Thanks for posting!!

I think these comments are well deserved. So many great memories.

One of the best alright, nice relaxing music with a nice beat.

He can actually make his guitar sound like the piano, an "orchestra-instrument" on its own. Just incredible.
Now that's my new favourite song ... or at least the one that's in my head all day!
he's really great
fantastic lolloping lines...what a rhythm man......superb.
puts me in a good mood everytime I hear this!
Lasy year I met Kenny in NYC.....I talked to him . He is very kind ...genius....
oh, many thanks for this one, bob!
He was very underrated and was in the same class as Wes Montgomery, George Benson and Joe Pass just to name a few of the best.
I love that guitarist
Jeannine - another great Duke Pearson composition.

Not a "Japanese Club Date". This was at Elario's in La Jolla (San Diego) California.
Sherman was the Drummer with Pat Martino !

Seems familiar somehow.

Who would ever want liquid when you can have this kind of rhythm ! Rhythm bangs great here !
Picky, picky, picky,
I have to agree with you there sclogse1
Agree. Love the guy and his playing but he seems a bit off with the feel as well. Better when he resorts to chord melody.
Lets hear you play it the way it should be played bro.
