  • Midshipman Oleksiy Lakei immigrated from Ukraine just a few years ago. He still has family in Ukraine. While on their Spring Break Concert Tour, he asked if he could teach the Glee Club a folk song, "Plyve Kacha" - sung here to a deeply moved audience. Our thoughts are with all those suffering in Ukraine and throughout the world in conflict.
    Translation:
    Oh, duckling floats on Tisyna
    Duckling floats on Tisyna.
    My mother, don't swear me,
    My mother, don't swear me.
Oh, if you will swear me at dark hour,
If you will swear me at dark hour.
    I don't know where I'll die,
    I don't know where I'll die.
Oh, I'll die on foreign lands
I will die on foreign lands.
Who will prepare a grave for me?
Who will prepare a grave for me?
    Oh, another people will prepare,
    Strangers will prepare.
    Won't you regret, mother?
    Won't you regret, mother?
Oh, my son, how could I not regret?
My son, how could I not regret?
You were laying on my heart,
You were laying on my heart.
    Oh, duckling floats on Tisyna
    Duckling floats on Tisyna.

I note that both Ukraine and the Naval Academy use the colors Blue and Gold, and I also note the use of the Trident by both. God bless Ukraine !

As an Englishman living now in Romania, next to the war and being a 15 year Army veteran myself, this was moving. I know the song, as it also became an anthem after the Maidan murders, but it is so significant now, its a beautiful haunting tribute to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. I have been in and out doing aid runs and heading back in a couple of weeks, and seeing members of the USN singing such a symbolic song in Ukrainian is just an awesome tribute, keeps me motivated too. Its things like this that also help motivate those in Ukraine to keep fighting despite being tired, they get the sense they are not alone. Salute to you guys, we need to show Russia we are united against them and that in 2022 you can't just walk into a country, kill its people and destroy it. God Bless to you all who continue to serve and LEST WE FORGET those in Ukraine who have already given their lives. Bravo guys 👍
