Am 61 and a three stripe purple .. Been training in jiu jitsu for 9 years and am also cross training in judo as a brown belt for four .. I train for strictly self defense and and will stop when they put me in the box .. My only opponent in myself and my goal is to be better than I was yesterday .. My end goal is to be a double black between Jiu jitsu and judo .. Never quit ..

That's another good point., From a self defense mentality/outlook. The street doesn't care how old you are, or what injuries/handicaps you have. Train as long as you can.. Only you can defend yourself.

I’m a 48 year old woman who is 247 pounds and I love my classes and my team. I’m up to three classes a week. My goals are show up and grow. I’m going to tournament in March. I’m just going to keep going. My son has a purple belt. My relationship with my son is amazing lately because I called him after class with questions that now he calls me. I’m grateful for every experience with my team and my opponents when I spar because when it’s hard later in the week my body suddenly has like a superpower. I have strength and flexibility is growing so fast for me. If I compare myself to my teammates I suck. If I compare me to two weeks ago, I’m a freaking force.

Thanks for the kind words of wisdom. As a 31-year-old man, my generation grew up thinking that we were supposed to be married, have a career, possibly kids, and everything figured out by now. I understand that school of thought isn't exclusive to my generation, but I think it's true that most people my age think being 30 or older is too old do anything new and if you wanted to have accomplished something at this age, then you should have started in our 20s. Well, I'm almost 32, and I'm thinking of starting BJJ to be healthier and teach myself some self-discipline in all aspects of my life. I like seeing these videos and comments because it's just as scary to me that I'm beginning my professional career as an older person as it is that I'm starting a new martial art having never trained or done any martial art before.

Im a 50 year old brown belt and have been training hard and consistently for about 8 years. Very recently Ive had a realization that left me really doubting my desire to keep training.
The deterioration of my body is now outpacing my improvement of skills so that no iteration of my future BJJ self will ever be as good as i am now. You’ve heard the mantra :“only try to be better than you were yesterday”. That will never happen again for me.
More and more frequently I am experiencing being beaten by younger less experienced people. I know this shouldn’t bother me and I know it doesn’t matter to anyone but me but that doesn’t take away the sting. Most recently i kinda felt humiliated in front of one of my BJJ heroes at a seminar.
Training has become a source of anxiety and frustration for me. It seems silly to quit now but its just making me miserable.
    Queue the sad violin.
Seriously though, not looking for sympathy just some voices of reason from the older guys.

Few months later, I dropped 15 pounds and people noticed. It wasn't fun at first training against athletic guys in their early 20's, but everything is okay once I made it through the first few months. It's really the only thing that makes me work out. (and I hate working out. Maybe Im the only one who likes to sit on his ass and watch TV, or Im the only one who admits it.)

I'm a 69 year old black belt, and have been doing BJJ for almost 25 years. I am doing fine. Here are my recommendation: Train with technical people with higher belts. Everyone gets it, that if you are older it will be a pretty uninteresting time if they rely on strength and speed rather than technique. Partnering with lower belt is not advised unless they are very aware. Otherwise they might do something that creates an injury without intending to. And it is critical to not allow aggressive chokes. The carotid arteries are less elastic and might have plaque. Plus, don't get thrown hard and don't try inversions. If you know you are in a bad position, tap. I will tap if I have too much weight on my chest, or my legs are getting split apart beyond my limited flexibility, like from some X guards. And respect your body. If you stay sore when training every day, do it every other day. It you stay sore when you train every other day, train every third day.

I’m 55 and starting. When I was young I trained in Tae Kwon Do and Judo. I do well in class but my body feels like it got hit by a truck the next day. I am going to continue for my mental and physical health. I would like to have a black belt some day maybe at 70 and help younger people learn.

Great video. I started bjj at 36 and the thing that most bothered me was an old muscle injury. When I was younger, I could work through it- but age makes that more difficult. I wanted to go everyday to train, but took it slow at first to better condition my body. I think this has helped me stay with it and avoid a more severe, bjj-ending injury.

Those guys are blessed to have him as a coach. I'm 44 and started over 5 months ago. I did the striking arts for 30 years. It was hard to put a white belt on again after wearing a black belt for so long. I've embraced it. I'm rolling around with guys in their 20s and 30s. Luckily, I've kept myself in pretty good shape. I'm hooked and would love to train more than 2 times a week but family and job make it difficult. One is never too old to start the journey. I hope to have a black belt before 60. lol

I'm 40 years old, and soon to be 41. I just started bjj for the very first time ever 2 weeks ago. I'm still pretty anxious about going, but this video and seeing everyone's comments does make me feel a bit better. I feel SO behind everyone I train with and tire out quicker, but I know it will get better the more I go. I think it's about going in with the right mindset and intention - just to learn, improve physical and mental state, meet new people, and have fun! I know it's a long road, but to anyone else my age or older reading this, just go for it! Wish me luck.

Knee injury and achilles issues aside, I can't jog anymore but this fits for serious cardio and learning something new. I started at 32, nearly 33 I know I'm not that old, one of my heroes in bjj is Mike Bidwell, I after reading a few of his articles i stopped seeing BJJ as a competitive activity but more as a personal challenge and spiritual journey, I became more interested in time training as opposed to belts for example I set myself the challenge this year to do 200 mat hours and next year I hope to match it. It's changed my focus in relation to BJJ and to be honest ive become a lot happier training.

Im turning 60 in a month, been training for 2 1/2 years and a one stripe blue belt. I'm the oldest guy at the gym, the younger guys progress faster in general but I always look back a year and remember where I was then. I look at it like this, I can get fat and sit around or I can train. If I train I take a risk on getting hurt but weigh that with being in the best shape of my life. If you stay in good shape as long as you can you will have a better life as you get older.

I started when I was 37 and now turning 41. Was always a good athlete through the years and picked it up after being involved in some harsh stuff as a law enforcement officer. Age is a factor, do not let anyone tell you otherwise. The higher belts are able to control the game more, but the lower end you still are using quite a bit of strength, speed and power. As a two stripe blue, I find myself getting frustrated over injuries and not being able to go balls to the walls all the time. I watch my instructor all the time, as he expends little energy and crushes. Like others have said, its too late to quite now. Just throwing a little encouragement out to anyone that finds the aging of the body a little frustrating.

In seriousness, I'm 44 and I'm glad you made this video. I've watched a lot of your stuff and I am going back and forth about it. Part of my hesitation is that I am very out of shape, something I'm currently working on. The other issue is medical. I have a mechanical heart valve, and because of that I am on a blood thinner. Which means I bruise super easy. If it was just me I'd go on my way and hope for the best. But I'm married and have three kids. Because of that I want to be able to defend them if the need arises. I'm pretty honest with myself in that I've only ever been in 2 fights in my adult life and if I had to defend my family it wouldn't go well for me. So that is a driving force.

    • @StanleyPinchak
      @StanleyPinchak 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Bryce, watch those ribs. They take a long time to fully heal. You may begin to feel better and want to roll, but just hold off. Then avoid getting stuck in knee on belly. Just tap.
If you are into holistic medicine check out comfrey (bone knit) poultices to speed healing. Also investigate how the endo-cannabinoid system is involved in upregulation of osteoblasts. Dr. Mechoulam has done some interesting research on speeding bone healing with endo-cannabinoid precursor oleoyl serine (think olive oil). Good luck with your recovery.
