--- and much more. They added Brand new filter types (in beta): gain riding / unmasking filter types that apply a gain to exactly compensate for the masking effect of a signal in the external side chain input
Recently i switched to Toneboosters Equalizer Pro. 59,- and can do everything Fabfilter & Split EQ does and then some. Really recommend you trying out the demo.
Yeah, it's like if Kirchhoff added features that help with mixing instead of a bunch of filter slopes that nobody could possibly give a shit about. Kirchhoff still goated for Dynamic EQing tho.
I recently picked up Tonebooster EQ pro which seems to do what split EQ does and a lot more, couldn't comment on the quality versus split EQ but seem intuitive and straight forward, its my go to for problem solving.
@@ruudheadz7095 i suppose if you're familiar with something you're not going to feel the need to adopting to something that does something very similar tho I think were TB shines is that it has more options with bands having background, transient, sibilance, direct and ambient filters...and its cheaper for anyone looking to expand out of their stock EQ's .I have a few FF plug ins and they are excellent and worth the money, i just never bought the pro-Q or Pro- L as i had other alternatives)
My 5 favorite/most used Eqs are: 1) tbt kirchhoff eq, for precise all-purpose engineering duties 2) sonible art:eq, to fast-track frequency unmasking several channels/busses when mixing 3) ua pultec epq1, mainly for giving drums certain flavors (as a hiphop producer drums are my bread and butter ^^) 4) tdr slick eq m, on busses/mix- and master-channel for broad tone shaping and stereo processing (per band!) as well as exciting highs&lows 5) spl eq ranger: this one has the creamiest hf-boost of any eq i've tried so far. This is basically it's only purpose, but i use it all the time on vocals. Sounds so smooth.
But the split default in Ozone 11 is actually very useful. Especially when the bass is mixed too loudly in a Mix and you don't want to sacrifice the kick. Very good EQ!
I feel like our bro here hasn't tried out Toneboosters Equalizer Pro yet, because there is no way he wouldn't be using it all the time if he has tried it haha. It's that good.
My top 3: UAD Pultec (because it just sounds so good) UAD API 550 (because broad stokes and bold moves) T-Racks Master EQ432 (because it's such a sweet master EQ) I think you can see a pattern here. I'm all about limitations. I used to be a big fan of the ProQ-style EQs 20 years ago (remember NyquistEq?) but I realised that it made me mix with my eyes more and fiddle around with stuff for too long when I didn't need to. Plus I like a bit of character. It makes it more fun.
Once I mixed a whole song with Reaper's built-in plugins, including an equalizer. It wasn't very convenient, but at the same time it sounded no worse than when using expensive and beautiful plugins. But I still prefer Fabfilter Pro-Q 3, because I've gotten used to it for a long time. Yes, at the moment it's not the most functional, but I just got used to it. A robot lives by algorithms, and a person lives by habits.
benn waiting for black friday for the Split EQ and finally got it a few days ago. i've worked with it before and i think it's perfect for sitations where neither pro q or a transient-shaper work. really easy to use as well!
I use 3 EQs all the time: Fabfilter Pro Q3 for pretty much everything during mixing and UAD Pultec EQ as well as waves V-EQ4 for tonal shaping and mastering
I just found about Kirchhoff EQ from this video, I guess I missed your other video. I've been looking for an EQ plugin that include pitch reference. I have perfect pitch, sometimes I can hear the pitch of the annoying resonances/partials/harmonics first (or metronome bleed), and often I'd look up the pitch-frequency table so I can be more precise. Or I just want to EQ based on pitches. I know this isn't your top plugin because it's more complicated/advanced, but having that pitch reference will be very useful to me, so thanks for sharing the honorable mentions anyway!
Toneboosters Equalizer Pro and Oxford Dynamic EQ are my top picks atm. For character : Sonimus A-EQ is really good, slept on. Michelangelo, Apogee and Deep Vintage Pultec
Hi. Thanks for the vidéo. I am pro q3 user. Would be nice watching you make the best analog or not equalisation you can, and compare it with an AI equalisation like smart eq. And show us (and you if you can trick yourself) a blind comparison.
Keep it simple when learning something new always works for me for anything new, and plugins are the same in photography most are just bling and you can accomplish most of the advanced effects when you know how the basic ones work
I agree. That`s why I went with Sonnox CLARO. Perfect for noobs like me. Later, when I know what I`m doing.. I`ll go with a higher-end non-AI EQ plugin.
@@permut8 TDR Nova Dynamic EQ does pretty much all I need and is downloaded hassle-free of required personal info. I would expect that Ai tech will be used as a sell point as it's the latest trend that of course you just can't do without, but yeah you can actually EQ fine with even stock plugins and automation etc. it's all just marketing
Tokyo Dawn Records Nova Ge edition (the paid edition. There is a free version as well which has a few less features) is one of my go to Eq's. Depending on what I'm trying to accomplish I'll use either the Fab Filter Pro Q3 or The Nova or both. I mostly use a lot of synth's and experimental sound designing for edm, dubstep, color bass, ect.
Regarding KirchhoffEQ: It's more advanced in some specific ways, but Pro-Q 3 has more features and I find the latter to be more useful in practice. I say this as someone who does, in fact, own both. If you're on the fence about which is best for you: I assure you that you will get more mileage out of Pro-Q 3, and that it should be your first choice.
I keep having problems with Smart EQ countering cleaning or pre-shaping I already did. Say I used the standard Pultec kick trick, Smart EQ (either on the kick sum or on the drum bus) wil do the opposite and nullifies the effect of the Pultec. Same for hi-passing overheads. Or when using an 'air' boost on guitar, the Smart EQ will pull down a 10k shelve by more than the air effect added, dulling the sound completely. Very annoying... and I cant figure out how to make it accept my choices for the basic sound shape.
I totaly agree with the UAD EQP-1A, it sounds very good and nice, but I've used Lindell PEX-500 so much that I've kinda' made that part of my sound so I rarely use UAD EQP-1A even though it sounds better. :)) Also Smart:EQ is very very good, but I have a tendency of running from these AI plugins. All in all, great video like always!!!
What do yall think about the kirckhoff eq? I switched to it yesterday because I have been having some serious phasing issues with pro-q. And the kirckhoff seems to not have that issue. Also it has vintage eq emulations embedded into it. Which is really cool.
All great EQ’s even though the Kirchhoff EQ feels longwinded to me. I hear great things about the Toneboosters EQ Pro! As for AI plugins, Don’t forget about the Focusrite FAST series. A collaboration with Sonible.
For transient EQ transgressor 3 is more advanced with release, hold etc... for advanced cleaning tool tone booster pro equalizer is unmatched with transient/sustain, sibilance, ambiance, unmask...
The only AI eq's I have used are Ozone 11 elements and the new Waves curves equator. The waves one is more of a resonance suppressor but I was pleasantly surprised by both.
EQs SHOULD NOT ADD SOUND. Also EQ is a filter or amplifier and really more complex than what people think. It would be a hidden magic box that you don't know what is happening. Bitwig EQ+ or just your stock eq will do all you need, unless you mix by ear. Split EQ is a unique tool I would say it's really a transit tool. I really like Uvi Shade for creative because how easy it is to add modulation to the eq.
If Kirchhoff EQ didn't come off to a bad start with all those unnecessary filter types and few other features, the acceptance would've been substancial I think. So far I've had fun trolling people with the GUI because I copied the color scheme from Pro-Q so precise that they can't tell if it was Kirchhoff EQ at first.
I love how Pro-Q3 shows the waveform of the side chain as well.
dude you're posting one video after another! love the content
Instead of Split EQ you can use Ozone 11 if you have it. Just set the EQ or Dynamics to "Transient/Sustain"
or toneboosters EQ PRO - and you also don't need Pro-Q3 no more in the list
@@stefanhaechler .. but you`ll want *Pro-Q 4* on the list!
I must really like plugins because I watch all these review videos without intending on buying any. 😂 keep up the great vids.
I'm pretty sure the new ToneBoosters EQ can do everything Pro-Q and SplitEQ can do...and it's cheaper.
exactly right
Ozone Eq + ZL Eq, both free and do the same thing
Since I got the tone boosters EQ I haven't looked back. I probably have every EQ that was every Made.😂
--- and much more. They added Brand new filter types (in beta): gain riding / unmasking filter types that apply a gain to exactly compensate for the masking effect of a signal in the external side chain input
Doesn’t have phase modes but that’s it tbh. They even removed the saturation options they had. They get rid of features pro q doesn’t have
That UAD Pulltec is not only a good Pulltec emulation but probably best Pulltec emulation. So many engineers say that it has THE sound and depth.
Same here and its been bloody great
Same here! Best EQ out there!
I recently picked up Tonebooster EQ pro which seems to do what split EQ does and a lot more, couldn't comment on the quality versus split EQ but seem intuitive and straight forward, its my go to for problem solving.
i compared Tonebooster EQ with Fabfilter Pro q3, been using pro q3 long time and for me pro q3 just for me gets the job done! #fabfilter💚
Wanted to write same, also the Hitstrip by DJ Strivel.

Same choice but Kirchhoff instead of fab in my case….
Sonible is a game changer for me I must admit. Always my first choice to balance everything.

Please try the Toneboosters, I too am interested
You can get the Ozone 11 EQ for free which also has the transient split functionality, but it doesn‘t let you fine tune the „split“ settings
But the split default in Ozone 11 is actually very useful. Especially when the bass is mixed too loudly in a Mix and you don't want to sacrifice the kick. Very good EQ!
Is the Spiff Transient Shaper plugin worth it if you have the Ozone 11 Eq?

Pro Q, UAD Pultec, SPL PQ and Scaler. I love the Elysia for M/S, and Smart Eq can off som great starting points.

alternative to smart eq 4 = neutron 5, even though it's not really the same concept, sometimes I try both to see which sounds better :)
- ProQ → easy and fast, for 'not so important' tasks
- Weiss EQ MP → easy and fast, excellent sounding for subtractive EQ-ing
- SplitEQ → easy and fast, transient / sustain
- smartEQ → automatic unmasking

Probably not, but I haven't tested them...
