I made this type of sump for my 240 gallon tank and it my far my favorite type of sump because it is so customizable and perfect for marine tanks. My main aquarium looks so much better without any visible equipment in it (except a couple powerheads).
Can you explain why this type of sump needs "more maintenance?" The prefilter has to be changed just as often on the wet/dry, and the biologic doesn't need that much maintenance.
Most vids: ... then a bubble trap, then the return. KoDIY: This what a bubble trap is and does (shows relevant clip of function). This is why you might want one. This is the type of aquarium it is most common for.
Hi im curious about what is the difference between the submerged sump and the fluidized moving bed sump, what is most beneficial for a 100 gallon freshwater tank for the common mechanical and biological filtration, basically i want to eliminate the use of using a canister filter. And would a 20 gallon sump work with the 100 gallon tank?
Slim Tim Typically that has more to do with the efficiency and type of overflow as well as the size of the sump. I personally have never had any type of sump overflow, but can imagine the headache that would be!
Hi Joey, I love your videos! They are both very educational and inspirational and have rekindled my interest in the hobby. I am looking to build my first sump and was just looking on some direction on how to size the glass for the baffles. The tank is a 360G and the sump is approximately 125 gallons 5' L x 2' W x 20" H and i am using two laguna max flo 2400s. The "sump" is currently running without any baffles and is very inefficient. I have sumps with baffles on my other tanks, but they were built by an aquarium manufacturer so I don't have any experience building them just like how they work. I was also looking to increase mechanical filtration because I do notice a lot of detritus on my ceramic rings and have to rinse them with tank water every few months. I use 100 micron filter socks, but I also read that you can add filter sponges between baffles, do you have any recommendations on where to obtain large filter sponges? Thank you for your time
Hey Joey great video as usual! I do have an idea for you, when you do build videos, maybe do longer videos with more raw footage (and less editing to save yourself a headache) just 'cause your content is so good! Thanks and keep up the good work :)
Yes and less vague. I'm having to sift through all these videos to get an idea of a sump that should be in 1 video. I can't find any yet on a refugium. Maybe the next 10 or so will have something?
Joey. How big of a sump do you think i need to run a 75, 55, and 35? I want one big enough to run all the large tanks and use the small marineland pumps for smaller tanks.
I suppose I could think of the people on youtube as my fish keeping friends, but I sure wish I had some people irl that loved this stuff as much as I do atm. I may be getting a bit in over my head with some of my thoughts, but anyways. !I love your videos! I'm hooking up some solar panels to help mitigate the power usage. I suppose a question I have for Mr. king, is, in the effort to save money on multiple pumps, If I want to keep multiple areas of water active with fish life, do you think it's ok to use 1 large more expensive pump and 1 multi staged filter setup for all, rather then buying more small pumps and setting up zone specific filtration? Money, xD it's a thing.
Awesome video. Is the main difference between a submerged and emerged system the the first chamber? One has a drip plate while the other doesn't? Is it safe to assume that a.submerged sump is suitable for a planted tank while an emerged sump is best for a fish only set up due to oxygen loss on the trickle filter?
AGUILAR3 The main difference is the media is out of water in one, and under water in the other. Your assumption what to use on which tank is typical of what most do as well. :)
Hey Joey, I am using an Aqueon 30 gallon aquarium for my sump. I would like to know what size panels I would need and where to place them in the aquarium sump. I think I will be using a Reef Octopus 152-S skimmer but not sure yet. Thanks.
I know you will probably think it a silly question but is there any real advantage to running more than one type of biological filtration...i was thinking of having a emerged filter over a fluidized. dont know if its worth the extra complication though
Hi, I am using all your videos to get to a planted aquarium (already built 36X18X15 inch ~ 40+ gallons). Instead of buying a filter I am now building a sump. I have 2 questions: 1) Sump size 1.5X1X1 feet would work? Or should it be larger? 2) The sump will be placed about 2 feet below my aquarium, what flow rate or power of pump should I use in the pump to send filtered water back to the aquarium? Will a pump from my old aquarium with flow rate of 880 ltr/hour work? As it has to raise water up, it's flow rate will definitely fall down to around 500 ltr/hour perhaps! would it work? Thanks in advance. :)
I'm trying to setup a 30g salt water was wondering on the best diy sump to hold the live rock and live sand so they can release the good bacteria in excess but not overcrowd the tank with rocks and lots of sand so the displacement effect for water isn't so big. the tank I'm planning already will have fake coral and fake anemone for 2 false percula clowns, a fire goby and possibly a jaw fish with some small star fish as cleanup crew.
My tank is fresh water tank now. But previously is salt water. Due to is a 2 feet by 2 feet reef sump tank, the layout of water flow is go 1 circle not like normal sump go horizontal and back to main tank.. which i cant use k1 method, can a skimmer put in k1 media, as the container is above water level, does it work? If a product work in this way, it will take little space in the sump. Is like big head " the container" above water and small body " the motor" in the sump. I think millions of fish keeper will be interested to know. 😅
I am designing a sump for a huge aquarium ( 12000 gallons ) the sump will be about 270 gallons, is it good if I designed it to be both emerged and submerged in deferent stages ?
Thank you for once again producing an awesome video! I love your channel and your new app.! Question: How does light affect the three style of sumps? Example, if you placed lighting in the last chamber area for an algae skimmer or plants, could it foul the other chambers of the sump?
Pardon me Joey, May i ask if i put four airstones to each side of my bio chamber in my submerged sump would increase the oxygenation of water and thus, increasing aerobic bacteria? I have quite a lot of ceramic rings in that chamber so i thought if i give more oxygen to it would be better... But the cons is i have to deal with humidity in my cabinet.
+CJ Bacteria will only be present in numbers that the food source allow them to be. Adding air is not going to spontaneously create more bacteria. Adding air stones would however insure the water stays circulated for a better chances of coming in contact with the bacteria, while aiding gas exchange created at the surface by the water movement.
Dont put the heater in the last section. As water level drops from evaporation, the heater can become exposed. Always put it in a section with a consistent water level
please help, i started my submerged sump 2 days ago and my water is cloudy. in the first stage i put about 2 in of polyfill follwed by a 2 in thick sponge. the middle chamber has about 7 gallons of lava rock. followed by the last stage that just has the pump in it. How can i clear up my water? am is my mechanical filter stage missing anything? p.s. i dont wanna use a filter sock or anything that needs to be changed often. my canister keeps my 55 crystal clear for at least a week
Hey man, been watching your videos for awhile and I'm finally ready to put some of it into action! I'm going to build a plywood tank around 120 gallons or so for my red ear sliders. I'm debating which type of filter to use. Submerged or emerged. Thoughts?
The series was great Joey. Lots of great ideas. I get the concept of the sump, baffles and water flow. I have a question though, would I need a pump in my tank to get the water down, or is there a way without drilling my tank to get it to overflow down to the sump? Question: I recently purchased an odd shape tank. It's a show tank... It's 10'x4'x 1' Yes it's 12 inches front to back. ***** Danny! Whats up my man. No videos from you in a while I see. Do I need to come down there and hold the camera for you!? Do a video on saltwater sumps!
Problem is if enough water evaporates such that water can't clear the 2nd baffle, the pump will burn out. Why not put 2nd baffle close to first baffle. then you really don't need 3rd baffle and a lot more water would have to evaporate before the pump runs dry. Or you could build a prefilter to sit on top of sump that drips water down and then you don't need baffles at all.
I wish glass was more available to me here in hawaii. Nothing is cheaper in Hawaii lol. Thanks joey eh by the way... app is soon much info. Enjoying it.
Jef B Thanks Jef. I suppose I make it appear like supplies are very common for me... Its just not the case. I typically have to special order most stuff in, or drive a couple hours to get it. Some things are cheap(or at least affordable)... some are not. I live in a very small town though, and not much is here. Glass isn't cheap for me either. In fact, acrylic is MUCH cheaper for me to buy than glass, which is typically not the case in most of the world.
Good afternoon,I’m blowing my brain apart here, as I’m pretty sure I’ve lost the formula and calculations in this video, I have a very soon and very near future project, of building an aquarium that is 4x2x1.5ft, in inches that’s 48 in length 24 in height and 18 in width, I’m planning on building a sump pump for it. Calculations have told me that it’s an 89.6 gallon tank and I need too pump 448 gallons an hour, I also need 448 watts directly from the heater, now, in designing the seperate sump tank, I’m stumped as too what the size of my sump tank should be.Specs89.6 gallon tank *main tank*I’ve got a pump in mind too pump 448 gallons an hourSump tank size ?????I just need the size of the tank needed, please please helpShould I use a 2ft long 2ft high 2ft wide tank for the sump? Please please, in desperate need of help(Not a saltwater setup)

Joey, can this sump work for saltwater tank?
Can I use sediment filter (5 micron) in my aquarium to clean water ? (which is used as a pre-filter in RO water purifier.)
If not ....WHY?
Cuz it will clog up very Very VERY fast and it's too expensive.
Can you use all three filter systems on one large tank?
Damn, silicon sealant looks so easy to use in ur video!
Problem is if enough water evaporates such that water can't clear the 2nd baffle, the pump will burn out. Why not put 2nd baffle close to first baffle. then you really don't need 3rd baffle and a lot more water would have to evaporate before the pump runs dry.
Or you could build a prefilter to sit on top of sump that drips water down and then you don't need baffles at all.
what brand of pre-filter and biological media do you use?
I have had great luck using glass from 8x10, 12x16, 12x10 picture frames .. glass is thin just have to be careful

This video just left me with more questions than answers. Maybe next time try not to be in a hurry just to make a buck. The cons: because you'll have to take care of it more. Wtf?
