Tacet the Terror I think it’s great that he’s talking about being careful and responsible with your money, don’t buy into anything you don’t understand. Having said that people should really take the time to understand the technology. He made some good points but also some misinformed ones. Bitcoin is kind of like the dot com bubble, where people got in without understanding why the technology is so revolutionary, and caused a massive surge and and equally massive collapse. But look at the biggest companies in the world now, and where you would be had you held on to some of those companies stocks. You know, small companies like Google, Amazon, or Facebook. I think blockchain technology (the ones that are free and open) will do for finance and trade what the internet did for information, but you gotta do the research for yourselves before you invest in anything.
@Peng Bian: of those three companies you mention only Amazon actually had public stock during the dot com bubble. Google had its IPO 2004 and facebook in 2012. But yeah it will be a new technology we will use, but invest in companies/coins that have a real and achievable goal and don't invest more than you can afford to lose.
When John Oliver said that almost anyone could create a cryptocurrency, I was dead sure that by the end of the episode, he would introduce a cryptocurrency that they created, just like he did with televanlegism.
That would probably go against the message of this video, which is "be careful and don't mindlessly throw your money into cryptocurrency..." because then a bunch of John's fans would very likely mindlessly throw their money into John's crytocurrency.
nah, he got it right the first time, he was positive about BTC in a funny way... its even worse now, look at all the meme coins, its 99% retards buying this shit. degen gamblers.
What this guy said, but slightly more polite. It was, and still is an interesting technology, but to proclaim it as the "money of the future" at such an early time was overhyped and has led to exactly what the Bitconnect guy was demonstrating. Now you have people dropping six figures on cheap repetitive graphics on the premise that it's "unique", despite the longstanding invention called Ctrl-C.
There's really know need to. Crypto is here to stay. Tons of shit coins, just like there are tons of shit businesses. The best will rise to the top. Some will win, most will lose. Best of luck. Do your own research. Don't invest more than you can afford to loose. FNA
Investing in crypto is just gambling. There is no reason to think it will be the currency of the future. I'm just surprised there are not more pump and dumps. Just look at the squid coin. Long term it seems crypto is not a good investment.
For a second I thought they actually got the bit connect guy to come on and talk about how ppl should use caution, all because his voice sounded so sad when he went "hey hey heeeeyyyyy" from behind the stage.
One thing I've noticed about John Oliver, basically every one of his episodes that aren't about a specific event (and even sometimes then), they stay relevant for YEARS. Sometimes when I'm listening I have to go down to the description and see when it came out because it's way more relevant than it should be.
I still remember going to work with that one dude who went on and on about bitcoin. One time I had enough and just clapped back: "yes yes, you got lucky but let's not forget a whole lot of other people who's in financial ruins over crytocurrency. Now shut the f up and let me work." He kinda stoped talking to me altogether after that 😬

@@flowmastaflam Cool, still not sustainable when the main source of value is other people buying in to a product that essentially doesn't exist. 5 years from now your multimillionaire investment could get worth pennies.
Inventing a new currency that would probably draw a TON of interest is an entirely different level from inventing a fake church or SuperPAC. It would actually be a thing, and people would want to use it, and all of a sudden Oliver and Co. is stuck managing a cryptocurrency until the end of time.
If it bottoms around 19k that's a hell of a lot higher than the last time it dropped a few years ago. Next Rally will probably break 100k, John might be a year or 5

@@jessefehr7249 That's a misleading comparison. You should be comparing Bitcoin processing to a similar transaction processor like Visa since that's what it is trying to replace. And it's a well-documented fact that each Bitcoin transaction consumes roughly 1.5 million times more energy than a traditional Visa transaction and that ratio will only get worse as the blockchain grows. Ever wondered why no one has ever implemented distributed linked lists to record data?? Because it is quite literally the most inefficient way of storing data. No its shit. People invest their nest egg and people usually aren't willing to lose that. You shouldn't gamble more than you are willing to lose. On things like crypto and individual stocks.
Seriously, if you treat it like a bet on the big sports final, or a bet with your colleague over who will win the Oscar for Best Director, i.e. as a game to spend money on and have fun, rather than an investment, then you'll probably be fine. Of course some people also get addicted to gambling and spend more than they can afford to lose, but that's a bigger issue.
This segment aged well. Blockchain currency is supposed to be a replacement for the fiat currencies. But, people use it as a gambling tool on stock markets.
Same, but then that would probably go against the message of this video, which is "be careful and don't mindlessly throw your money into cryptocurrency..." because then a bunch of John's fans would very likely mindlessly throw their money into John's crytocurrency.
He could have made a billion dollars doing it. No, I'm not kidding. People watch his show by the millions. A good portion of the fans would buy that coin out of solidarity and just because. Worst case scenario is that he only manages to raise 1500000USD, and the LastWeekCoin's value languishes after that.
He could have but you don't "make" money, you take it from other investors. This money doesn't come from nowhere it comes from other people. He could have gained billions, but it would have been at the expense of his audience and that's religions game, not his. He has morals
maybe the proceeds could have gone to charity or something. so it's not like HBO are just ripping off their audience, but they still get to do their stunt.
Ombro, that's basically what he died with Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption. Legally he could have kept all that money and the IRS wouldn't have complained, instead he chose to donate it to charity. Imagine how much charity could do with a billion dollars made from Lastweekcoin.

They will not end up in prison b/c authorities are giving crypto holders what they want - currency with no intervention. They sit back and laugh their butts off when people lose $$. People really missed the point of this video. He literally says that blockchain has potential but that is also can be abused. That’s clear and is not anti technology or a statement disparaging the technology, it’s just a warning to make intelligent investment decisions and to make sure you aren’t taken advantage of.
Blockchain is the technology, crypto currency is a currency and doesn't have anything to do with the technology other than being traded in it. Blockchain is good and revolutionizing, crypto is fairytail-money that has value because a lot of people like fairytails. Tokens have expected value, coins have limited real value, the technology is seperate from those two and has real application.
@@MartinSlow Money is fairy tail money. Once, it was backed by something, its weight in gold. Now the only value placed in our paper bills is because we place it there. This is why economies collapse when too much money is printed (example Germany post WWI) and also why the value of a country's money fluctuates so much compared to other companies.

Actually Earthly Earthly, your private key is your pass-phrase (typically a series of randomly selected words), not your password. You can use your pass-phrase to recover access to your cryptocurrency on a specific blockchain if you lose or forget your wallet password for that currency. You should never store your pass-phrase in electronic form on your computer because once someone else has it, they can take your crypto. Always keep a hard-copy (printed or written on paper) with your important documents in a secure fire-safe (or safety deposit box).

Had a friend try and talk me into it over 2 years ago. I told him I just unsure about something that has nothing to support it and has no legal standing yet. He invested 2k in one. Last week his 2k investment was now worth almost 200 dollars.
What did he invest in? Bitcoin is still worth more than it was in 2020. So are the second and third biggest cryptocurrencies. So is dogecoin for that matter. I would guess for that kind of loss he put a large chunk of money in one relatively new crypto, which then crashed. That's not a good investing strategy for *any* asset.

I am disappointed , as John Oliver didn't start his own cryptocurrency :(
Zack Smith I think he meant “Yeah, like when he made his own religion,” not “yeah he should have made his own religion”
Ahah yes
You must feel so smart for knowing that.
OMG can we have a rat faced crypto?
It's because he's for once positive about a subject.
Because blockchain will solve shit.
I completely lost it when he yelled out responsibility with that much enthusiasm. xD
Tacet the Terror My catholic girlfriend used to do that when she made me put it in her ass.
Peng Bian Eh... I might not be as optimistic as you but I still agree that people should be responsible and think before they invest.
@Peng Bian: of those three companies you mention only Amazon actually had public stock during the dot com bubble. Google had its IPO 2004 and facebook in 2012.
But yeah it will be a new technology we will use, but invest in companies/coins that have a real and achievable goal and don't invest more than you can afford to lose.
same here, I'm still laughing :-)
When John Oliver said that almost anyone could create a cryptocurrency, I was dead sure that by the end of the episode, he would introduce a cryptocurrency that they created, just like he did with televanlegism.
They have learned that that was a bad idea.
Dude he's trying to become prime minister of Italy.... he can only do so much at one time lol
I'm sure they asked Dan to make one, but he read the script to this episode first.
That would probably go against the message of this video, which is "be careful and don't mindlessly throw your money into cryptocurrency..." because then a bunch of John's fans would very likely mindlessly throw their money into John's crytocurrency.
YourMomz07 The italian elections are over ;)
Do another episode on Crypto now. Would be a good follow-up
nah, he got it right the first time, he was positive about BTC in a funny way... its even worse now, look at all the meme coins, its 99% retards buying this shit. degen gamblers.

Now shut the f up and let me work." @@jessefehr7249 Oh? The entire internet uses more energy than one particular part of the internet? That's amazing.
@@jessefehr7249 That's a misleading comparison. You should be comparing Bitcoin processing to a similar transaction processor like Visa since that's what it is trying to replace. That’s clear and is not anti technology or a statement disparaging the technology, it’s just a warning to make intelligent investment decisions and to make sure you aren’t taken advantage of.
What makes you think people missed the point of the video?
Blockchain is the technology, crypto currency is a currency and doesn't have anything to do with the technology other than being traded in it. Blockchain is good and revolutionizing, crypto is fairytail-money that has value because a lot of people like fairytails. Tokens have expected value, coins have limited real value, the technology is seperate from those two and has real application.
Cryptocoins is a digital asset, not currency. To be a currency it has to be widely acceptable as a legal tender, which cryptocoins are not.
Who missed the point?
@@MartinSlow Money is fairy tail money. Once, it was backed by something, its weight in gold. Now the only value placed in our paper bills is because we place it there. This is why economies collapse when too much money is printed (example Germany post WWI) and also why the value of a country's money fluctuates so much compared to other companies.

@@flowmastaflam yes the cycle is over. this is what cycles are. they cycle. just not within the weekly time frame you were hoping for. the down cycle can last as long or longer than your wished for bull run.

If it Dogecoin can do what Bitcoin did, now is the time to sell! sell! sell!. Let Dogecoin get back down to less than one cent and we can all buy massive amounts and be millionaires within 4 to 22 months.
good work guys. its nearly impossible to explain these risks to people who hardly understand even the stock market, you guys did a good job.
Even wall street fellows don't under the stock market! Its highly speculative and those assholes randomely trade money. Ask any stock fellow what derivatives mean. No one will answer as they do not know. Behind the stock market technicalities, the people who work are the Mathematicians/Physicists(PhD). Have you read the book 'The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine' by Michael Lewis or the movie. Book is zillion times better than the movie. The four guys who bet against the financial market(stock market) clearly disprove your point.
True that. Tho I thought about risking it a year ago but did not have the money to loose. Damn it.
The level of risk on the regulated mass global finance markets is tremendous too actually, that is the whole reason smart young people are avoiding their government's untrusted crap FIAT, Equities like Amazon with P/E ratios over 500 at times(even macys was like 25), and we get 0 interest at the banks who charge 5% to us to borrow the money that they get for free even when its something like student debt that borrowers arent even allowed to go bankrupt from, and even real estate prices are built on low interest rates and suckers from our parents generation who kinda dont have a choice but to keep milking their property for cash.... Most people who are under 35 have close to 0 confidence in our financial system and that it will ever work for them so we are just waiting for the current US economy to die so we have a shot at buying a house and having a family like the generations ahead of us did.
Its true that in the last few months there has been a huge amount of dumb money coming into the game but truth be told from someone who worked in IT venture capital, international big 4 consulting, and runs millions in active businesses.. Crypto and specifically the smart contract scene in crypto will unleash the small and micro cap companies to global finance and create a new version of money FAR better than just bitcoin.

The best part of this was the people in the background of that Bitconnect event. They were trying to smile, but you could see the embarassment in their eyes.

I got the strongest sense of deja vu when he said that, especially after the first time, when he said, "They pump and they dump." and just stopped and smiled. Why? (I'm DST-lagged, so I'm having trouble with questions like this). Where do I know that from?

Deividas: Sorry. :) It truly was an issue of me not being able to put my finger on what was giving me such a strong sense of deja vu, and I figured it out as I was typing.
Do you really think it was a deliberate impression? (I'm guessing that's what you're saying?) "Mozart in the Jungle" is hardly "Game of Thrones," in terms of wide audience... is it?

Very nice and educative video i must say . From a technical point of view of crytocurrencybuffering , the RSI looks promising in favor of the bulls, as the daily RSI is at the bullish territory above 50 (after reversing earlier today). At the same time, the Stochastic RSI oscillator is about to make a bullish crossover at the oversold area. In case this happens, it might assist the market in reaching higher highs. Decentralized and untraceable currency helps a lot of bad guys, like hackers, smuglers, drug dealers, paedophiles, tax evaders, terrorists, human traffickers...
Why do people think bitcoin is untraceable??? It’s based on public ledger the blockchain…it’s the opposite of untraceable it’s all public open source
@@robertorthwein7680 Point taken, but people present Bitcoin as untraceable, like it's something good. If it's not untraceable, then it has no use for anyone.

Kegan Michael Private Key
And what is a cardie b?
I'm not exactly sure what a private key is...

I treated crypto like long term lottery tickets. Instead of buying a scratch off ticket, I bought some crypto, think I spent $60 or so. Year and a half later, I’m still scratching a couple “crypto tickets”. 🤷🏽♂️
In that way, I bought 5 tickets and 2 of them are now worth almost the same value as what they cost 😂 The other 3 are lost.
Anyone else wanted John to make his own crypto currency?
David Samolkin no.
it would be really entertaining when next week he would give an update and say we are now worth $ 1.5 billion
I think the reason he brought up Dogecoin was because they *wanted* to make up their own crypto and then realized someone already beat them to it and it did everything they expected

Jacob Jensen probably because they didn’t want to feed into the hype. If they did it, it would be very similar to dogecoin which already exist and they addressed.
Probably because if they did, it would do even better than that joke Dogecoin, which would defeat the purpose of their message.

That's not a good investing strategy for *any* asset.
k and i invested 2k and im up 60k. i have friends that invested in the stock market a few years ago and lost upwards to 50%. doesnt really mean anything my guy
