Love the video OG, Such great memories I also was a paperboy back in the day and remember reading the reviews in the gaming magazines at the newsagents I worked in
It might not be the worst conversion, but I remember being well disappointed with the outrun conversion. Remember them putting the arcade soundtrack on the flip side of the cassette so you could listen to it whilst playing the game. 😔 Loved the conversion of Green Beret at the time. Great video👍
@@graeme4540 Green Bert was great keep your eyes peeled as will be doing a video featuring my favourite conversions too 😉 I remember the Outrun Soundtrack on side B 😉😎🍺
@darrenball4620 Actually I got to play it in our local arcade in Whitley Bay. It was a bit disappointing. So used to conversions being massively inferior, but not in this case. 👍
Great video again Mr OG Sir! And you’ve dared to venture into the Pandora’s (Arcade;-) Box (no pun intended lol) of ‘Top Fives’ too!?! A brave man indeed… as a Spectrum newbie I’ll have to sit these debates out for a while and watch from the sidelines until I’ve learned more about my own humble Speccy… mine is still on your side of the Atlantic - so as far as excuses go, I reckon mine is pretty bullet proof… for now Lol 😂
Hehehe. That was really entertaining! for another bad arcade conversion i'd throw Marble Madness in the ring. Thanks for the nice video and best regards from Switzerland!
Some absolute stinkers there, OG mate! In the 80s we wanted that arcade experience in our home so bad. My 2 faves were Nemesis and Rolling Thunder and i got them both on the speccy. I tried to convince myself i was paying the arcade game! And it almost worked. It was all about imagination back then 😂
Exactly that matey I wrote a BLOG all about the artwork selling us games etc over on my website. Rolling Thunder on the Speccy wasn’t to bad if I recall 😉
@OGDuffy I'll have a look for it! Yeah Rolling Thunder did a good job but it was still a stretch to pretend I was playing the arcade, hehe. What would we have thought to all these devices filled with every emulator?🤣
I remember being disappointed at the various ports of defender to the spectrum, but was probably spoilt by playing planetoid on the bbc micro during school dinner breaks. Think I finally found a decent one for the speccy, but can't remember if it was orbiter or invasion of the body snatchas
@@OGDuffy As disappointing as it is, I think that the Spectrum port of _Double Dragon_ is the best of the three main 8-bit home-computer ports. The Amstrad CPC version is pitifully slow and the first half of the third level seems to be completely missing from that particular version, whilst the Commodore 64 version is so bad that there is an apology in the original instruction manual (gaps in almost every character's waist, cannot go up ladders and Abobo is nowhere to be seen - he does not even burst through that wall on the first level, yet he absolutely does do that and is present in the Spectrum version, even on 48K machines!).
I didn't mind Double Dragon, despite the squeaky SFX and sausage throwing. Not a patch on the arcade version of course, but I would put it at about 65%.
Lets be fair though .. What did you expect back then.. 48k was about the size of one of the characters in the arcade versions ..Never mind cramming that and a whole game into it :)
Hi OGDuffy I just my Retro Spectrum Today, I used love Zaxxon on The Commodore, i was just trying to remember if Galaxian or Galaga was released on the Spectrum ? i also enjoued Spy Hunter but i think Came out later ?👍
I only had a black and white telly in the 80’s. I enjoyed all the arcade conversions on the spectrum. II enjoyed all of them big time. It was the colour capabilities that were limited. But on black and white telly, they were awesome.
Imagine going through every single title released on the Spectrum that was an arcade port.....a painful experience! Pitfighter on the Master System was a total shocker, but it looks like Soul Calibur 6 compared to the Spectrum version. 😂
Think Pit Fighter was a bad conversion on most systems to be fair. 😉 Gonna do a video showing my favourite arcade conversions Arcade conversions on the system in the very near future 😉
If you think those are shockers, take a look at the Spectrum ports of _Final Fight_ and _Street Fighter II: The World Warrior._ Both of them are pitifully slow and jerky. I had the misfortune to get the chance to play _Final Fight_ when I reviewed it back in 2020.
To be fair, the Pitfighter conversion was an extremely good attempt. Trying to implement the scaling stuff was overly ambitious. Would have been better if they kept the characters smaller aka the Megadrive version for speed. I agree about Kung Fu Master. I was impressed with sound in game, but could have been a lot better without playability-wise. Best Speccy conversions: Space Harrier, Super Hangon, Enduro Racer, Renegade, Ghosts and Goblins.
Will be doing a video exploring the better arcade conversions at some point in the near future matey so keep your eyes peeled for that one… Some great suggestions buddy 😉
so you go to a race track and see F1 cars, then drive your 3 wheeler home and say.. hmm bad conversion there!.. if the spectrum had similar specs as an arcade machine things would be different. The Spectrum can only do what its limits are.
Sadly, I do think you are looking at these games with modern eyes, OG. I think this is one reason why I won't invest in the latest ZX Spectrum release. As some memories of how much we appreciated the games back then, would be totally lost! 😢

Good stuff, more like the content I enjoy to watch. Zaxxon does look pretty bad! Jail Break was a bust on all 8 bits. Slow and sluggish and it only has 4 way movement instead of the 8 the arcade has. Pit Fighter wasn’t a great game to begin with! I quite liked the C64 conversion as they decided to make the characters smaller and it played quite well. Double Dragon on Spectrum looks like a masterpiece compared to the C64 version! But yeah very much lacking but at least they rectified it with the DD2 conversion. Don’t know how they screwed Kung Fu Master up on Spectrum so much. Amstrad & C64 are excellent! As for worst on Spectrum Stun Runner, Hard Drivin, Ninja Spirit, Skull & Crossbones to name a few. Maybe you need to do a Pt2 of bad conversions voted by your community and maybe also do a C64 worst and Amstrad worst next
You are more critical than me in general on some of these, you are a little bit older than I am though so maybe when you played them in the day you would've been more objective about what you were playing than I would have been. With the green screen Amstrad I guess we were just grateful when a game was playable cos sometimes you had no idea what was going on. And you had to wait 10 minutes for something to load everytime you wanted to have a go on it. Kids these days don't know how good theyve got it!!! 😂 Worst arcade port I cant really remember.
