My bread & butter gun is a 70cm Rob Allen rail gun, most of my partners also use 70cm rail guns mostly Makos. 70cm guns seem to be the sweet spot for PNW shore diving. Currently I’m trying out a 85cm Red Tide rail gun with a reel just because. Honestly, a 70cm gun will handle anything you’ll want to shoot. My SIL & I dive Newport a fair bit.

Wow I feel like I hadn't even seen rob allen rail guns on amazon when I've looked up spear guns, but if I type it is specifically they pop up and they do look quite nice! I'd agree 70cm definitely seems ideal for the PNW shore! I've been curious about reels, they seem cool, but they also seem like they could be annoying if you miss the shot lol!

I currently use a 82cm Pathos Laser Open Pro Carbon with a custom roller head; it's configured as an inverted roller with 19mm lower bands and a 16mm kicker top band. I get pretty good power out it and can adjust it based on shooting distance needed. I have some short videos on it on my page if you want to see how it shoots.

If you swap to a 14mm band 9/16 and over stretch it quite a bit will actually be more powerful and faster the 16mm and 5/8 bands are to thick create a ton of drag!

That is something I'll have to try! But I put the original single flopper tip back on, and did really well with that recently!

I love pole fishing at the jetties. I've always wondered, how do spearfishermen ensure that a ling is legal size before spearing it, especially because being underwater makes them look bigger? And what do you do if you shoot an undersized one but don't realize it until you measure it?

    • @ExploreNHook

I love both, but definitely spearfishing more!
You just have to not shoot the ones that look like they could possibly be 22-24 inches! And only go for the ones that are obviously larger than 22inches, that's at least how I've started to go!
I'm sure guys just keep ones if they measured under 22, it's up to the person I guess. But if you have it and a State guy sees it your going to get a ticket! That's why it's best to just go for obviously over 22in ones!

@@ExploreNHook, cool, thanks. I used to do a lot of spearfishing growing up on the Big Island of Hawaii in the 60s and 70s. Obviously, we never had any size restriction issues, but I definitely remember that fish were a lot smaller when you got them ashore!

@@xyzct You are very correct fish do look bigger under water, I get smaller rock fish all the time if I'm not in a school to distinguish size, but lings you can definitely tell if your looking at like a 26+ inch one, but you have to give up the 22 inch ones to not risk a ticket!

@@ExploreNHook, good man. Yeah, poaching is not cool. It infuriates me when I see scofflaws at the jetty. We should be stewards, not environmental vandals.

@@xyzct I agree poaching is not cool at all! Plus if I see a ling that is probably 22 inch, but it's just to close to know for sure it's cool to just get really close and watch them!

What is your favorite eating fish you catch (spear!)?

I really like the black rock fish and the lingcod the best! They both have firm flakey white meat! Greenling is a close third lol!

Just found your channel. What got me interested in spearfishing was I found a channel that I have been watching for a couple years now. But,his channel is Key West Waterman and he makes spear guns. I never heard of anyone spearfishing here on the west coast. I will be subbing to your channel. Thanks for sharing and stay safe

Well thanks man I hope I won't disappoint!! I was always looking for videos for spearfishing before I started here in the PNW, and there just wasn't very many, so after I started learning, I decided to start filming it, and then started to learn to edit so we shall see how good I can get at it all!!! But it's definitely been a fun experience!!! Hopefully I'll see you out there soon enough!!
