This is the best video about flame control I have seen. 👍

Thank you so much Birgit!! 🥰 I’m considering a whole series of these types of “tips” videos. So thank you for the feedback!

I just invested in an Orca torch. I chose it because its ambien air and my space is seriously too small for me to comfortably have a gas and oxygen tank. I cant wait til we move when I can upgrade to the little smith it looks like a dream!! Thanks Julessa always a fantastic video!

You should still be able to adjust your flame on the Orca. I’m not 💯 sure, but it’s worth exploring. I love my Little Torch. I’ve been using the same one for over 14 years and just recently had to change out the hoses. I saved for a long time to get it.

@@JulessaScofieldMetalsmith I cant wait until I can upgrade to the Smith Little torch. I am happy to have a better torch (just upgraded from the butane torch 🤣) but I figure this one will teach me heat control if nothing else...lol... Yes I can adjust the oxygen from the nozzle but the flame does look different even still.

What size tips for the torch do you suggest?

For the Smith Little Torch, I use the #7 for my larger projects like bangles, but for most of my work, I use the #5 torch tip size on the Smith.

Excellent video, thank you. Stupid question... can you use a soldering iron?? The one I have goes to about 950F.

Thank you so much! No stupid questions around these parts. Unfortunately you cannot “solder” sterling with a soldering iron. To get the metal hot enough it must reach about 1450 degrees F to essentially “weld” the joint closed so a propane or acetylene torch is required to hard solder the joint closed. But, for small projects, you can use a small butane torch like the ones used by chefs for crème brûlée desserts. So that is an option if you’re just getting into silver work. Let me know if you have any other questions! Have a great day!!
