I bought Captain America and the Avengers on snes and then rented it at blockbuster on sega Genesis . I then went to funcoland and traded it in for Genesis copy. $28 later, the guy at funcoland seemed dumbfounded. He was clearly a snes guy. A month later when I went back he remembered me and told me how much better captain America is on Genesis lol

I've never played it on genesis. I loved the game in the arcade but it is practically unplayable on the SNES and I was a huge nintendo kid in the console wars. Very disappointing game on SNES.

The difference is likely due to the fact that the game was ported by the original developer of the Arcade game to the Genesis, but a different company altogether handled the SNES port, and it shows.

What made the SNES version so bad is that you couldn't play it like a normal beat em up. The reason is that the enemies dont act like they're getting hit; they flash instead. It's nearly impossible to finish a combo without getting hit. Punching is pretty much worthless and the only way to fight is with your long distance weapons.

Some of these games (Flashback EDIT: Not Flashback, James Pond) are better on the Genesis because they originated on the Amiga, which essentially had the same CPU as the Genesis, making porting the games over much easier, and allowing for better ports!

I was going to mention that about James Pond. It'd be cool to have a video comparing the Amiga versions of some of these games to the Genesis/SNES, though the comparison often comes down to Amiga having better sound and Genesis having slightly better graphics (parallax especially) with SNES ports coming out in between. I was playing First Samurai for SNES recently and comparing to the Amiga, it's really fascinating, particularly with the instances of Nintendo censoring content.

Zach Reddy james pond 2 is almost the same on amiga and genesis, probably the amiga version has brighter colors and slightly better sound quality. Snes version has some very minor graphical changes and i believe the screen is zoomed a lil bit. Either way, james pond 2 is a chore to play to completion.

Great video, SnesDrunk! “Star Trek: The Next Generation” is another title that is much better on Genesis than on Super Nintendo- ClanOfTheGrayWolf did a very nice video covering the game in their “16-bit gems” series. I have friends who speedrun Mickey Mania on SNES and Genesis and they are pretty much different games. They have the same level structure but the play mechanics are different and I actually like the Genesis version overall, especially when it comes to the music like Captain Pete EOL Boss 2. Growing up I was a SNES household until I bought my Genesis in 1996 after everything moved to PS1/N64/Saturn (Dont laugh) in high school, so thankfully I got exposed to a lot of the same games on different systems. Awesome video like always.

The thing that really sets Mickey Mania for Genesis apart from its SNES counterpart is the missing level in the later. ahh, yes, James Pond is one of those games that i try to like better on Genesis, but end up playing the original Amiga version, 'cause that's where it actually originated and that is always a deciding factor for me..))
i'm trying to appreciate both systems equally, but there's been way too many occasions when things i played on SEGA played poorly on SNES.. well, it's a good thing that both systems have enough exclusive games)
actually, i've noticed a trend here - whenever the game was ported from Amiga it almost always ended up less "optimised" on SNES.... it's almost like that cursed Blast Processing had some merit after all.. XD

    • @yohkom.7988

One major problem on SNES is the limited resolution, 256 pixels of width while the Amiga and Mega Drive mostly output 320 pixels so SNES versions in comparison usually have cropped picture which not only reduces the playfield size but also makes for stretched graphics once displayed on TV (4:3).
The other main problem on SNES is the CPU which is rather weak while both the Amiga and Mega Drive use the M68000 which allow for good performances in games, on Mega Drive in particular since the system has efficient sprites/scrolling engine. A good example is Desert Strike.
Others multiplat which suffer on SNES compared to Amiga and/or Mega Drive are Pinball Dreams and its sequel Pinball Fantasies, The Chaos Engine or James Pond 2.

Completely agree with you on the Avengers game. The Genesis port was at least similar to the arcade version with the combat. The SNES version had you take hits before completing a 3 strike combo due to the enemies flashing when hit like in Mega Man. That may work for platformers but it does not work at all for beat'em ups.

If you really are into soccer games, Super Formation Soccer series (Super Soccer) and J.League Excite Stage series (Soccer Shootout) for the SNES, and J.League Pro Striker series for the MD, are kinda fun... but all of them play a bit dull and weird japanese teams is a buzzkill.

Desert Strike was certainly suited to the Mega Drive, however the conversion was pretty lacklustre. None of the assets were altered to take into account the reduced resolution thus adding some gameplay frustrations, and the colours were tweaked for appearance but the count was unchanged. Whilst there are arguably better sound effects, they're pretty muffled, and the music also takes a hit - I prefer the original's synth guitars, the mix of themes by both Brian Schmidt and Rob Hubbard in their own individual styles, and the fact the initial intro theme is missing from the SNES version. There's also the usual Nintendo censorship. It's really not all bad though - the addition of zoom effects on static screens and the mosaic effect when a level finishes loading are pretty nice, the ability to jink without holding down the Hellfire button is good, and it's still quite playable. I enjoyed both versions, but definitely favour the Mega Drive original.

I was going to mention Desert, Jungle and Urban Strike in the comments of the first video of this series, but I made sure to watch this first and I am glad that I did. While the Genesis/Mega Drive versions look and play better, the Super Nintendo had the one benefit of allowing the "Jink" command to be bound to any button (shoulders especially) while the Genesis had three face buttons only (this predates 6-button controllers) and to jink one had to hold down one of the three weapon buttons. I only own a few dozen console carts in total, but I own all three games on both systems and would recommend them to anyone.

Sega had like a 3 year head start and showing what a CPU clocked o er 7 mHz could do yet nintendo, having a larger color palette, more on screen colors, more layers, mode 7 (hardware scaling), etc did right on what was basically the gpu side YET picked a CPU that was just over 3 mHz???? The gen/mega was basically twice as fast. Yes the cpu is not the only main consideration but that 2x+ speed boost was why there was damn near no slow down on gen/mega games. Basically, had Nintendo at least matched The sega cpu (or at least got close) then the SNES would have MORE than blown the Sega console out of the water without question. Something Nintendo still does to this day.
Props to sega as both consoles were amazing. Good thing the net was not around then cause the Nintendo/Sega console war would blow the MS/Don't one out of the water ( which got to its head with the 360 and ps3)

Sunset riders is not extremely hard in genesis, you just can't rush through the levels like on the other versions, the reason why you can continue where you died is because it's like that on arcade, same on how the dash is performed, but i prefer having two types of shot (move while shooting or not) rather than dashing with a third button, it's a really good thing to have. And it's not a lazy port at all, so it's another one of them.

I know you don't pick what ads play before your video, but sitting through 2 ads, one of which was almost 5 minutes long, for a video that's 5:16 long itself, is just nuts.
guess I need to put that ad blocker back on

Besides Cool Spot it also applies to "Mick and Mack as global gladiators". I was hoping that turning on the game on snes - in the first level I will hear the wildest rock, of original quality, like rocknroll racing did. nope.

That game was a pretty bad game on both systems, albeit I do agree that Genesis did have better audio....Even as a kid, I thought it was lazy how so many of the enemies and levels were the same they just changed the colors. Plus, for licensed kid game it was really unfair and way too hard in some spots. Which is odd because some spots were overly easy, so the difficulty was all over the place.
It was kind of disappointing because the McDonald licensed games were actually pretty good up to this point with M.C. kids (nes), and McDonald's Treasure land (Genesis/MD). They weren't "best ever" great mind you, but they were well-made and fun to play, and levels away better from the licensed crap that was being released back then.

Sports and shooters were better on the Genesis cuz of the faster processor. It could keep track of all that shit going on in those games much better

DejaVoodooDoll nope, register-starved 8/16 bit 65816 needs more instructions to accomplish the same things, compared to 16/32 bit 68000. sometimes much more, even if it executes those instructions faster. MIPS scores are misleading, it is much slower. also it frequently runs at reduced frequency due to slow ROMs in most cartridges. btw, same with 6502 vs z80 MIPS difference.

      Genesis has Blast Processing.
Ok, with that out of my system, another example is Weaponlord. A Great game whether its on the Genesis or the SNES but while the SNES has better visuals and sounds, the Genesis has better gameplay because the game moves a little faster on the Genesis. This game was released first on the SNES before being ported over. If you watch the video *Weaponlord 20th Anniversary Overview* on DRUMZART's channel Djames will even comment that there is a noticeable difference in how the game plays between the systems.

I remember people back in the day praising the SNES version up the wazoo and belittling the Mega Drive one in comparison... but, while I couldn't stop playing it on the Mega Drive, I was never able to go beyond level 2 on SNES, it was so dull.
And the music was WAY better on Mega Drive. I even recorded it on a cassette tape and would listen to it on the car stereo all the time.

    • @supersexysega

@@oscarzxn4067 Some games are completely ruined by their length. Alien 3 on the SNES is one of those games. You have what should be a 45 minute game stretched with the same repetitive b.s. to pad the game to about a 3hr. chore. It makes a great first impression though and definitely beats the Genesis version in regards to atmospehere and graphics.

    • @mjorge0alves
      @mjorge0alves 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@supersexysega not at all. That might be true to me now, but it certainly wasn't 20 years ago. Players at that age wouldn't mind playing the same thing over and over. It was just fine for one to rent it and finish it a couple of times during the weekend. Varied gameplay was the exception, not the norm.
