    - In this video, Dennis Foley kicks off a new series titled "Don't Do This." Dennis highlights common mistakes in room setups using real photos submitted by viewers. In this episode, he addresses the pitfalls of cluttered horn speaker setups and the impact of various surfaces on sound quality. Learn why it's crucial to avoid clutter, the problems with placing horns near side walls, and how different materials affect frequency response. Join us to understand the importance of maintaining a clean, predictable setup for optimal sound resolution.

    So glad to hear you mention bookshelves and various phase damaging things. I have been commenting for a few years now on various setups I've seen on the internets about how peoples cabinets, bookshelves, fireplaces, wall nooks et al are resonance generating features. People spending 250k on their rigs to get amazing bass and then lining the room with resonance generators... I was trying to solve a crappy bass issue at one frequency for a long time and I couldn't figure it out and one day I removed the bookshelves and as I was moving the items out I heard the bass issue go away... and those were crappy cheap flimsy bookshelves, not solid heavy ones that will generate even more resonance, and they were filled with large coffee table books and records.... yet they still generate resonances
    The other thing I keep seeing is people spending mega money on Wilson audio speakers so they can have perfect time alignment and then placing the speakers 1 ft away from the sidewall, instantly formalizing a massive time alignment issue, thus making their mega speaker purchase a joke. Cheers.

      It is amazing isn't it. I see on average 30 - 50 system set ups per month and only 2-3 are set up properly.

      Small room acoustics is all about minimizing the unwanted modal pressures through room size and treatment along with controlling the time signature of reflections. Why would you add objects that increase spurious reflections and do nothing to manage lower frequency pressure issues. It appears to me that the objects are more important than the sound quality.

    So the room should be empty? Not everyone has that luxury, it's going to be a compromise. What's the best compromise?

      Keep all items no more than 12" off the floor so they don't interfer with mid range drivers.

      This is death by a 1,000 cuts. Every piece of gear produces a spurious reflection. There are thousands off each piece. Add all of these together you get distortion that is represnted in a smaller soundstage with less seperation and resolution.

      Cluster isn't difusser and absorber?

    • @AcousticFields
      @AcousticFields  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@litoboy5 No. Not even close. Quadratic diffusion has a specific frequency response you can use as an ancoustical tool. All gear and racks give you are reflections. Remember the two main issues to manage in small rooms are unwanted pressures and reflections.

      The k-402 horn has a horizontal pattern of only 90 degrees total and pattern control down to the Schroeder frequency area.
      Correct me if I’m wrong, but this way side wall reflections are limited

      @@nicktube3904correct. Horns are narrow controlled dispersion and react less with rooms than typical box speakers.
