No! He did everyone a favor, I'm from Buffalo NY and I was lucky enough to see them one time, it was either the Aud where I saw Tim Horten and the French connection play or the new ice rink. But I did my homework before seeing the hip and was told it would be like a religious experience....and it was!
That being said, there should be 10 million views on this .as a requirement to be Canadian, because this band is one of the biggest gems ever to rise up from Canadian soils
I love the Beatles, The Stones, Zeppelin ... but The HIP will always be my all-time favorite band. A day rarely goes by when I don't listen to at least one HIP song.
My sister was a solo artist and was the opening act, they let her use there P.A. equipment, i hadn't heard of the Hip until this show, they were incredibly nice guys! Was a fan ever since! RIP Gord
Im guessing by the use of the word Givin'er your from Ontario as well? Back in tje day we use to say "Givin'er 90" "Oh fuck boys lets go hit up the Beer store head out to the Bar after and fucking "Giver 90" who's in?"
@Music Matters ...it appears no one asked you for a nimble minded nasty opinion. But then there’s always the rude ones in the crowd 🥱... a few little shitz that peep in. No doubt you’re one that shoots your mouth off behind that keyboard all over sm 🤢 The fortitude, integrity, dedication, kindness, creativity, charity and community driven in the manner of which these five humans live by far outweigh and in no comparison to the some type of being you might claim to be. Run along and listen to yer favourites. Bet that one goes over your head also. Seriously, you don’t belong here if you’re not a 30-year fan and an ‘old’ Canadian ...omfg 😂.
@Music Matters You don't like the Hip but here you are commenting on a youtube video about them. Guess you have a bad habit of looking up music you hate to make troll posts. Idiot.
Pretty awesome Gord interacting with the kid at 27:00 min and then signing an autograph for him on his canadian flag mid song at 38:15 before shakng his hand. Class act.
I lived in Toronto's Riverdale neighbourhood not far from where Gord lives. A local hobo told me that Gord had walked up to him once and given him a hundred-dollar bill. Truly, a class act, and Canada's real poet laureate-- c'mon guys, let's start a petition to get Gord the position before he's lost to us.
+Paul Snider The stories about him coming out of the woodwork since his diagnosis are truly heartwarming. The music is what he does, his humanity is what makes him great. A guy I worked with used to be a security guard for concerts. He worked backstage at a Hip show and some people came back saying the guitarist invited them but they didn't have passes. He couldn't let them in because they had no proof. The guitarist (not sure which one, he wasn't familiar with the hip) came out and tore a strip off him because he wouldn't let these people in. Gord heard this and grabbed the guitarist and the people into the dressing room. 10 minutes later the guitarist came out and apologized to my buddy, then Gord poked his head out saying "everything cool here now? Did you apologize? Sorry about that buddy"
Unfortunately you're 8 years late to the Party Gord Downie lead singer tragically died of Brain Cancer 😢. My favorite Hip Albums in order : 1. Up to here 2. Road Apples 3. Tragically Hip (Debut) 4. Fully Completely
My undying appreciation to whoever stood there, in the obvious heat of the day, with what I'm guessing was one of those 30 pound VHS monstrosities. Greatness in the making, all digitized and shit. Thank you for this!
it was a heavy beast, that's why at times the video is all over, my wife and I had to pass it the best we could from one shoulder to the other shoulder, thanks for the thanks, you are right , it was a stinker of a humid day
First seen The Hip in Grand Bend in 1985 payed a two dollar cover charge , unreal I was hooked and the last time I seen was Aug 20 / 16 Thx for the memories Gord and the band 😎
You can see here these guys worked themselves from the ground up all the way to eventual Fame! Miss you Gord❤❤❤ I was the lead singer in a Hip cover band and "SHE DIDNT KNOW" the best songs ever written that we love to play live to this day!! So dam👍
I was living in Charles Mansion on July 1, 1989. The Hip had moved out some time before. It was gutted by an arson fire on July 9. We almost died. Sadly I missed this show, although I did see them at Wonderland Gardens in the winter of 1987. Amazing live band.
Look at the size of the crowd! Best version of Opiated they've ever done. Brought a tear to my eye. Smalltown Ontario boys rockin' out to a crowd of 20 on Canada Day. Bottle is rusty, but the engine is oh so clean.
I was there! Well my mom was pregnant with me haha but it's cool to actually see the show she's always been talking about and show her the video. They sound incredible!
Pre pre hip....my daughter was born in '78. Boy she went to many concert when I was pregnant. Just a few years ago my daughter text me just to thank me for all of the great music I exposed her too! Gee I thought she wasn't paying attention all of these years. Tell your mom thanks. It will mean a lot to her♥️ As soon as I moved to Buffalo in '90...it was The Tragically Hip everyday! ♥️
This shows The Hip as they were before The Big Time ... A friend of mine gave me a Radio Promotional Copy of Up to Here in 1989 ... his sister in NFLD had given it to him !! I have been a Fan ever since ! Saw one Live show ... Magnetic Hill !! Thanks for the UPLOAD !!

Small but very fortunate crowd.♥️ I loved during the Hips last show in Kingston...Gord said to the large audience "We loved you when you were just 8 people". ♥️
Guy that recorded this needs one of heritage moments commercials and amazing Gord and the whole crew giving 110% when it seems like there isn't much of a crowd, but of course that's to be expected. Just great footage. What a bunch a beauti's
This might be the greatest treasure on TH-cam . As a die hard Hip fan.. this is more historically important than anything else Hip related . Thanks for posting. This is an amazing set . They sound so so good ! Pure gold .
OMG! I think this was at Harris Park; I might have walked right passed them; wouldn't have had any idea who they were; I was waiting for Max Webster and David Wilcox later that day and evening ... whoever posted this, has thoroughly blown my mind, and at 64, that's not easily done ...
This was a radio station show. My shop Pierce Sound supplied stage, all sound and lighting. It was just an afternoon show. The evening was The Royal Canadian Big Band Festival. For the techies we used a Yamaha PM 3000 for front of house with a 14 box Meyer Sound rig. The outer boxes, I built for Helix to use on one of their Texas tours.
I like to imagine the young kid dancing grew up with that flag signed hanging on his wall in his bedroom, bought every album, saw The Hip live as many times as humanly possible and even got to attend the final concert in Kingston. I bet he met Gord Downie too and thanked him for being his idol.
Somewhere in Canada, right about now, there is a few friends jamming together for just a handful of good folks, much like the hip did here in 1989, that one day will become the next generation of Canadian rock gawd's.
Thank you so much for recording this I'm sure it wasnt as easy as pointing your phone. I saw them the night before in Fort Erie at the Friendship Festival. They opened for Colin James. They did the Killer Whale improv Gord was on fire that night. I think they played Molson park for Canada Dsy in the summer of 89

Gary and Christine Makes it all the more poignant with what Gord said at the end of their last Toronto concert at ACC: Thank you, we love you; we loved you 20 years ago when you were 6 people. Seeing this really brings it all home. Goodbye, and farewell Mr. Downie....
I saw them 5 months later at the Concordia university cafeteria in front of 200 people.. They honored all these bookings even though Up To Here was charting then..
That day was a scorcher. I’d seen them in a small bar previously and knew they were going somewhere. Was nice to be in such a small crowd. Always loved Gords manic head bob.
What a lucky boy to have such good parents! And how cool it was recorded,I wish I was that kid! I was lucky to get backstage at a Jackson Browne concert and get his autograf . I got to shake hands with rory Gallagher had front row seats at his show but I'd trade places with that kid if i could!
I wish I didn't wait until 1994 to get into these guys. I lived in Kingston for a decade & couldn't understand the massive hype about them playing at Fort Henry on their Fully Completely tour. This video is a gem.......Last of the unplucked!
What a great version of Opiated!! I remember seeing the Hip at the turn of the century in Cape Breton. I believe it was the World Container Tour. For whatever reason there was only like 700 people there (it was a dreary winter day but come on!! it's the HIP!!!) They played as if there was 17,000. Solid 2 1/2 hr set. 4 encores. It was like we got them in for a house party. Awesome video. Thanks.
This is like finding video of the Beatles touring behind "A Hard Days Night", playing some county fair at 11am on a Thursday. And Killing It. Unbefrickinlievable.
They had a concert once in my hometown! These guys rocked right from day one and after watching the documentary on prime I found myself listening to them even more! Cheers for the great music!
What a find !!! Thanks for posting... I saw them play this setlist right about this time in a wee club called Checkers in Regina Saskatchewan.... they were incredible live in such a small setting.... great show! Great people in Regina!
From Buffalo NY🇺🇲, I've got tears in my eyes. Incredible to see this. I didn't discover them until Road Apples. I was living in Florida up til 1991. Saw them at The Aud 4/29/95. Man this is soooo cool!
The sound`s actually decent considering the quality of the video. Thank you so much for posting this. I saw them in Saskatoon in the late 80s and they were the best live band I`d ever seen, and still are.
My brother told me today that we were at this concert so I had to see if it was on TH-cam...and Lo and behold here it is. I have no memory of this at all but I saw my brother at least once.
Incredibly amazing then and now...I love the fact my kids rock out to the Hip and we can enjoy them together.. That's a rare thing in music and generations. Thanks to person who posted and of course thanks the the Tragically Hip for everything.
Wow, absolutely stunning quality especially given it was recorded on whatever video camera someone had in 1989. Hats off to whoever was mixing them live back then as well, GREAT mix. And great job Darrin putting this all together, thanks man. Very well done.
I so wanted to go to this concert but i had just started a "good" job. All day working in that factory i was thinking "i'm missing it" that was a very hard day indeed, moreso now that i watch this.
How insane would it have been to be one of the dozen or so that watched this show? Up close and personal with future Canadian icons. Happy Birthday Gordie

WOW!!! This is indeed a fantastic showcase. They'd only been touring together for a few weeks before this show. So glad it was captured at Harris Park in London, Ontario.
wow i was the sound guy for the band back then we played Detroit the night before did this show then drove to Molson park for some big festival we were all so young I had the time of my life with those guys
Im sure you right we did so many gigs back then we did 2 tours across Canada back to back then went into the States I remeber playing Boston and staying at the holliday inn next to Fenway we went and bought two street hockey nets and sticks and played a game behind the green monster how Canadien we also got a private tour of the old Boston Gardens I think Gords uncle is Harry Synden
There are no words. Probably the most loved band in history based on pure passionately sincere caring for them as almost family. I worry about Gordie everyday and ive never even met him. Seen them play numerous times luckily but im just so saddened that we'll never hear another album from the Hip. Or see his crazy antics onstage. He is something otherworldly. Thank you Gordie, Gord, Johnny, Rob and Paul. For bring such a huge part of my life since Smalltown Bringdown smacked in the face.
Who ever recorded this did our country the hugest favour ever, thank you!
No! He did everyone a favor, I'm from Buffalo NY and I was lucky enough to see them one time, it was either the Aud where I saw Tim Horten and the French connection play or the new ice rink. Back when Gordie had hair!,,, damn that's awesome seeing him just head bang around
I love the Beatles, The Stones, Zeppelin ... but The HIP will always be my all-time favorite band. A day rarely goes by when I don't listen to at least one HIP song.
What's amazing to see them back in the 89 doing she didn't know,,damm

Holy s*** they played three pistols and she didn't know and I even gotten through the rest of the video yet!!
Wow!! Three pistols in '89..? What a blessing.. 😍
They were young, hungry & playing to practically no one here. Yet still just given'r. How can ya not love them?! Thanks for this post!

The kid is fantastic, holding the beautiful flag no less. Gord does't miss beat while making the little guy's day.
What a goddamn legend eh!!
Shake it brother
The original tapes should be locked up with Library and Archives Canada for safekeeping. This is gold.
If these are original songs, this band is rocking I’d love to see them, where? When, great musicians

Love when the kid says "dad!!! ... I wanna be that!!!"
Lol, I thought/think it might me "Dad, I want to be done" .. lol 31:40
The early Tragically Hip had that great raw sound, energy and edge back in the day which is really missing in a lot of music now.

Exactly recorded as I bled away listening to music...
I was 14...the long years of my early start had begun. And,
I loved them.
Sorry, this is my daughters account, but this is awesome! Tight as hell, love them!!

Interesting that Three Pistols was already written.
@@veryfunnyman111 are you really from Japan and know about the Hip??
Cool song.
Had to watch this again today. I was 19. The background music to my life.
Yeah I was 21 myself. I managed to see them for the first time in the fall of '89 at a bar in Hamilton. Epic shit.
That's exactly how i described it. The soundtrack of my 20s 😎 (although sadly i didnt appreciate it at the time 🥺)

yeah they didnt ever stand like this, weird one. awesome show.

The Hip are so pure! Best live band ever. Awesome to see Gord sign that little k'id's Canadian flag. Thanks for posting this!
This is the best live hip concert and recording ever. By far.
Imagine being in that tiny crowd hearing them for the first time being blown away by a band that would eventually be playing in front of millions!
wow again . cant thank yo enough for this piece of canadiana. it is in my opinion priceless. thank you

Gord Downey doing his thing just as did until the end! The most authentic musical artist and front man ever!
Unreal watching how talented they were that young. That set was $$
Wow. What an important historical document. Thanks to recorder/poster!

39 minute mark is why I love these guys
Makes you wonder if those in attendance could recognize at the time, the absolute greatness and legacy that taken root.
Thank you so much for recording this I'm sure it wasnt as easy as pointing your phone. I saw them the night before in Fort Erie at the Friendship Festival. They opened for Colin James. They did the Killer Whale improv Gord was on fire that night. I think they played Molson park for Canada Dsy in the summer of 89
This is awesome..I guess in those days rob and gord changed places on stage. I caught that immediately
Goosebumps, man...goosebumps. If they only knew. They, meaning the crowd...and The Hip themselves. Incredible!
I was actually at this show. I recall only about 20 people showed up - if that. But they always put their all into each performance. Never disappointed.

So true. Gord was as generous and genuine as they get.

No New Orleans is strange,.. was it even written then?
WOW!!! This is indeed a fantastic showcase. They'd only been touring together for a few weeks before this show. So glad it was captured at Harris Park in London, Ontario.
wow i was the sound guy for the band back then we played Detroit the night before
did this show then drove to Molson park for some big festival
we were all so young I had the time of my life with those guys
The show the night before was in Fort Erie (June 30th).. I was there and still have the ticket. They opened for Colin James lol
Im sure you right we did so many gigs back then we did 2 tours across Canada back to back then went into the States
I remeber playing Boston and staying at the holliday inn next to Fenway
we went and bought two street hockey nets and sticks and played a game behind the green monster how Canadien
we also got a private tour of the old Boston Gardens I think Gords uncle is Harry Synden
the sound is great, buddy!

This is absolutely amazing. Thank you so much for uploading.
Wow, just noticed that Gordie was a southpaw....very cool. Further explains why he was such an immense talent. Rock on to Das Hip!
I noticed that too😉
There are no words.
