Despite what is said round about 28:02, "At the height of the Blitz, the Germans were launching over 100 V1 bombs at London every day" - the first V1 bomb (the Doodlebug) wasn't launched till 1944. The Blitz ended in May 1941.
You know, maybe the early dancers didn’t understand what “Madam” was up against, and what her dream was for England, even as adults and now old people. You don’t _literally_ make something as important, as unique, as lasting, from absolutely _nothing,_ as de Valois did by being all “sweetie darling!” and kissy-face. I think I’ve watched every extant interview with de Valois, bc she fascinated me, even before I knew who she was and what she had done!
This is a good documentary but only focuses on one company, therefore the title is somewhat misleading. Sad no mention about Nicolai Sergeyev (who put on the classics for Ninette de Valois), nor Mona Inglesby and her International Ballet which toured the UK also during the Blitz. Alicia Markova is also nowhere to be heard of.
Absolutely! I published an article for the BBC last year about International Ballet and Mona Inglesby and without discrediting the Royal Ballet and their work, it is shocking how others seem to have all been forgotten about and yet they all worked just as hard and toured just as much..
Precious!! Invaluable documentary of our beloved Royal Ballet history!!

Paula Dunning is one of the last dancers alive here in Montreal
