Great video! Thanks for making it! It helps up and comers like myself get an inside look on how you fast riders think and ride.

Nice to hear. My goal was to shoe what a race day is like.

Looking good there Bob & Lineker 👌

Yes, it was ok. On the technical stuff my level is not good enough. But if I get the engine and those technical bits sorted I think I can make up these 1.8sec that I miss to do battle with Richard. After 3 years of not training this is a OK result.

Yes, the bike needs a good base suspension setup. The courses all are so similar that there is no use in changing the suspension based on the course. Only if it rains I change it a bit.

I'd love to hear your opinion on the advantages and disadvantages of riding clutchless vs using the clutch, as it pertains to supermoto bikes.

    • @bobstopler
      @bobstopler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well, I ride without the clutch if possible. This bike has no flywheel though and is very peaky. So I advice not to use it if you do not need it. I think I will make a video on how to use the clutch on these types of bike.

@@bobstopler oh I see. A video on this topic would be informative and much appreciated. I currently don't use the clutch ever. I tried using it the other day just to see if there was any advantages, and was locking up the rear tire everywhere because I'm use to having the engine resisting the brake force 😆
I know some fast supermoto riders use the clutch and some don't, so I'd like to learn more about why both ways are chosen.

So far as I can tell the only quick rider not using the clutch is Jan Zapach. But he rides a drz which is closer to a 250 sport bike than a supermoto. It has a massive flywheel and low power so you can get away with running extreme gearing to keep the rpm high. But it does mean he needs to shift. So even with that bike I think if you gear it a bit tall and use the clutch there are some advantages. The SXV doesn't run wel below 3500rpm (it can idle ok at 2100rpm but no lower). So anything below 20kph means pulling in the clutch and over dragging it a little to remove some of the vibrations. Problem with the SXV is it also has more power than a 450 supermoto (stock it is comparable to a highly tuned 450) but very high compression and extreme bore to stroke ratio (it can do 13500rpm). Gear it too aggressive and I cant control it anymore. Now it lifts the front wheel at about 25% throttle already. I installed a special throttle profile on it to improve this.

@@bobstopler interesting. It makes sense now that you say that, in regards to the low gearing on a torquie light bike. You are running taller gearing to control the power, but that means at full lock it will stall out or bog if you don't slip the clutch. Is that accurate?
I'm on a DR-Z like Jan. I'm running a little taller gearing than him. My bike hits rev limiter at 56kph in 1st gear. I only just barely touched that speed at my last cone monkey competition in March.
I started out slipping the clutch but rear brake control was much more choppy and my rotations were inconsistent. I also went through 3 clutch kits in 1 year.

@@atypical_moto practice to reach grey zone with a clutch - it will let engine work properly + it will let you use a rear brake as usual.
The bike choice is always on your taste, but in my team I say - if you need a fork don't buy a spoon to make a fork out of it :) Low rpm torque is a pleasure for fast rotations.

    Hey Bob,
I paid a lot of attention on your videos and I like the way you are also going into deep analysis in your videos. I got a question, does the MotoGymkhana improve the things you are doing on the track? Keep up the good work and maybe we see each other in Mettet. Greetings Marcel

It has a massive impact on track riding. It is hard to get consistent training in on the track. If you want to make progress training once per week is not much. With gymkhana I was able to train 4x or more per week for several years. This also meant that when going to the track for the first time I was pretty much instantly fast.
A few things to adjust to but not much (like becoming comfortable with using the curbs). Also a 1000 at Mettet will feel like a low power tame moped compared to the gymkhana bike.
Also to get quicker you need to find the limit and crash. I crashed on average 3 to 5 times per training doing gymkhana. One thing that is a bit tricky/ to watch out for is becoming to comfortable with crashing. Most gymkhana riders have to crash a few times on track to learn it is something you are better off preventing.

@@bobstopler Sadly in Germany there are almost close to zero offers for this sport and I could not find a near by place to go there to check it out. So far I am only doing trackdays. Guess you must have passed me several times in Mettet. Most of the time I am riding an old SV 650 in Mettet and my best time was a 1:14,8 but of course your times there are really impressive. I did one day a run with my ZX 10R 2005 and so far I could only do a 1:11,3. But now that I watched one video of you, I have found of course a few weakspots to work on. First I need to get the balance of the bike fixed and try to follow some of your advises.
As soon as I find a spot to try out the gymkhana I will take the chance to do so. I have RMZ 450 but I think it is a little bit overpowered.
Usually we take this bike to go to ride supermoto in Spa.
If you going to be in Mettet this weekend we might see each other.
      Take care!
