Hi Dan, thank you again for taking the time to make these great vlogs. Keep doing what you do, what you want to do and most of all, keep being you! If people don't like it then they can just jog on by and go and view something to their liking or better still, using their energy to make their own vlog!!!!!

Love the grey jumper quote. P.S. As an ophthalmologist, please do not do any comparisons blind, but masked instead.

Hi Dan ! Thanks for looking at my question re the re lacquering. I think, like a lot of things in life its probably subjective. I did hear way back that there was a period maybe in the 70's when guys were stripping lacquer off their horns because they felt it would darken the sound. Who knows. I own a Mk6 that is a lacquered 1967 model and it's a bit on the bright side. I also have a SA 80 with only about 15% lacquer left and it plays darker. You're right in that the horns just need to be played. 80% of ones sound comes from within and the sax is 'very much after the fact' Re your silver plated horn, I don't know how all the plating could come away on it's own ? It's not like lacquer which is more fragile. So maybe it was removed at some stage. Either way it doesn't look like you'll be selling it any time so why would it matter ?
Re the Selmer records. Selmer has new owners who are clearly only interested now in the bottom line. I'm not sure opening up their records to players is going to help them. Their new place in Paris is much smaller than the existing place, which is a fantastic building with so much history and the existing original records may even get put into storage, or now they have been digitalised, get thrown out, which would be more than a shame.

I’ve noticed that most new horns are sold as lacquered models. If you want an unlacquered horn you can certainly get one, but the choice is more limited. I still don’t know what to make of this. Are there any downsides to using an unlacquered horn - and, if so,what are they ... ???

Hmmmm, if the horn actually resonates as you blow and in 'theory' it does then coating it in lacquer will reduce the vibrations and consequently the overall sound. That as you know will be the basis of the argument. However, perhaps an ocilliscope would visibly prove this but listening is different and I for one cannot hear any difference. Right Dan future vlog.... Blind sound test of lacquered/Unlacquered horn.... Gotta be a winner... Cheers 🎷👍

But surely they'd have to be the same horn? i.e. taking a horn that is lacquered and then de lacquering it? If anyone wants to lend me that and an acid bath, I'd certainly be up for testing!

@@DanForshaw same model maybe 82z..... Lacquered / Unlacquered would be an option.... Then it's at least viable😂 cheers

I don't think there's a difference in sound either. Have heard comparisons. Same mouthpiece/reed. Same player. It's about looks. But there was a time not too long ago when everyone was trying to sell us on the type of steel used and if the horn was plated or not...that there was a audible difference. Probably just wanted to help sell horns. It's more about the geometry of the sax, mouthpiece and hardness of the reed...gear wise...but it's 90% the player. How much wind and air control they have. Do they have any soul in their playing or are they just mechanical/robotic...
Some sax players you can tell belong in an orchestra where it's just about playing correctly. in time with the other players. Not about standing out or being creative. Soulful. Original in interpretation...Many just sound like they're "going through the motions" (e.g. like when we were little and we HAD TO practice piano...didn't want to but did it to make our parents happy...wanted to be doing something else at the time).

You need to ditch the flat cap. Bit outdated now
