Anyone who's watched BB before this understands those high up in the Cartel business have so much money, that they can't spend it all(both from excess and legally). That's what makes Gus's chicken operation so brilliant. It allows a lot of that cash to be laundered and at the same time, as bases for distributing drugs/other products. Money is simply a tool for a more important thing the cartel desires: Power.

I love how Lalo is still a man of honor. When Jimmy initially turns it down, Lalo stands up, it's a subtle way of using his position to slightly intimidate Jimmy into persuasion, but he alleviates that tension immediately with his charisma, by opening his arms palms out and smiling and positively reinforcing Jimmy's talent. It's a nice little mind trick of playing on Jimmy's ego. But then when Jimmy starts talking price, Lalo sits back down and goes more on the attentive side, another way of alleviating the tension, implying that he's listening and open to negotiation. I love that they wrote him more as a calculating manipulator rather than just relying on intimidation.

I like how Lalo instantly clocked Saul as a two-faced manipulator. He starts off singing the same way he did for Nacho but as soon as Saul mentioned Tuco and his “Abuelita,” that was the nail in the coffin. Lalo was like “Sympathy and humor. That’s his poker face. I’m gonna chip away at it.” Notice he doesn’t concede anything to Saul in this interaction. @@lunch77 they wrote themselves into a corner with that machine gun. Season 5 was 16 episodes and it was a completely new arc. New antagonists, a new business model. Plus the second half of season 5 was completely luck based. Hank was about to tell raimi who heisenberg was before he heard about jesse in lock up. Walt was just a minute too late to his house as jesse and hank left. Walt told jack and his crew not to come but never explained that the cops arrived.
Stuff like that made season 5 of breaking bad feel fake. I know walt always thrived on his luck but the chance factor in season 5 wasnt realistic.
When marie is the voice of reason, you know the writers took a wrong turn.

You know this guy is colder than Tuco when Saul asks "how's your abuelita?" And Lalo just ignores the question and gets right to whatever agenda he has. God I wish he would have been in BB.

The actress for Abuelita died around the time of season 3. We could assume that she was canonically dead by that time as well. Lalo clearly understood that Saul was trying to deflect from the actual matter, but was probably a little sorrowful knowing that the only person who could calm Tuco down was dead. He isn’t a psychopath, he’s shown emotion plenty of times in the series
