2001 Space Odyssey did not have the motion control in the sense that we understand it today. There were no computers controlling Motors moving the cameras. There were mechanical gears on the camera dolly that they would have to watch and they would have to hit certain marks along the way at specific times so that they knew that the camera was moving exactly the way it needed to move. However they could not pan or tilt the camera they could only move it forward or backward. Any shots of spaceships where the camera is panning or tilting it's actually not a moving shot at all. They were still photographs of the miniatures being animated on an oxberry animation stand. It's actually a fun little exercise to determine if a shot is still photograph of the model or if it's an actual motion shot.

Very interesting. It's amazing what kind of rigging and thoughtfulness went into productions. Still to this day there is a lot of problem solving but the gear has certainly made it easier.

Neither have seen 2001? Maybe screen all of Kubrick's films...his cinematography is astonishing.

@@SPLYCEHOUSE Honestly, even just watching something like The Shining. He used the camera in so many weird ways...not even including making the Steadicam do things it's inventor never conceived of, getting amazing helicopter shots before the invention of gyrostabilized cameras, etc. Even if you guys do it off camera for your own enjoyment...it would be worth the time.

Kubrick arguably made the best film in every genre he made a movie in.
      The Shining is essential horror.
      2001 is the best scifi.
Barry Lyndon is hands down the best period drama, with INSANE cinematography.
Hard to pick "best war movie" but Full Metal Jacket is a genere defining example for sure.
Dr. Strangelove and Clockwork Orange are two pieces of satire that are still painful to watch.
With the exception of Barry Lyndon, all of these are endlessly quoted in pop culture.

If you have not seen 2001, you cannot call yourself a cinematographer.
It's like an painter who's never seen the Mona Lisa, a classical musician who's never heard Mozart's requiem, or a chef who has never had a Caesar salad.

How can you all NOT know his movies?!? He’s considered THE man right?
And the only Oscar he won was the initial Special Effects award
