Update. Nick Rolovich was named the new head football coach for Hawaii. Hopefully, Rollo can bring back some of the excitement and glory to the program. Go warriors 2016!!!
Peter Rodby Didn’t Brian Smith call plays last year? Plus the run and shoot is supposed to be pass heavy which is why it seems we hardly run the ball. It takes the right players for a system to work, you can’t just want a team to run the ball more when we don’t have the oline or rbs to be successful at it. Look what happened when we tried to run a more balanced system under chow, our offense sucked! And as far as coach stability, Hawaii will always be a stepping stone position. We just don’t have the money to compete with the power 5 schools to keep our coaches from leaving.
@@rainman11 I get so frustrated with Hawaii. There's so much talent here on the islands. Yet they waste the vast majority of the scholarships on out of state talent. Give the top local talent a full ride and than scout outside talent. It can be difficult running the ball in a spread offense. Back in the Jones era Hawaii had a lot of success running the ball. It's sad to see Rolo leave to Washington St. He took the better opportunity to feed his family. Now we are back at square one.
@@islandfantasy5931 nah it’s not that we don’t try and recruit the top local talents but more the powerhouse schools are going after them now. As for our current team, I thought coach graham did a good job considering the circumstances. I think the offense should be fun this year and excited to see Calvin Turner with a full season. He’s a legit nfl prospect.
@@rainman11 The local boys on signing day always talk about not getting a scholarship to play for Hawaii. They end up taking the full ride to Oregon state or some other college. The last time I checked to see how many scholarships was available to the local talent was 2 to 4 scholarships a year.
I remember this game I barley move to Utah in 2001 that year when byu was undefeated and byu got there ass completely destroyed by Hawaii 72-45 Hawaii put destroy beat down on byu not only Hawaii did that but they also put out and Injured 10 byu player as well damn Hawaii was not joke damn I will never forget that game.
@bizzleortizzle I say this is one of Hawaii's biggest wins. But when they beat the number 9 team Iowa in 1989, beating Byu in 1990 when Ty Detmer won the heisman earlier that day 59-28, winning the holiday bowl in 1992, or beating nebraska in 1955 after being a 50 point underdog, beating Boise state in 2007, beating fresno in 2008 at fresno. But I got respect for BYU they usually have a good team so thanks for the luck.
I remembah dis game....I wen go wit my friend Jojo and his sistah Lolo. We wen go grind zippys aftah dis game. Had choke rainbow warrior fans ovah there. We was all grinding ono chili frank and wun tun min and talking about dis game. Choke fun dat time ovah there
...And BYU was complaining of WHY they weren't even being considered late in 2001 for Nat. Championship game! I'll tell you why. First of all, they shoulda lost the holy war game. 7 of their games were in the Mountain West. 8 of their opponents had losing records. I mean really bad...Cal 1-10; Wy 2-9; Nev, SD St, Miss St "all" 3-8; Tulane 3-9; etc. Also, not one of their reg. season opponents were even ranked!!
BYU had such a terrible defense that year. Allowed 35 vs Tulane, 31 vs UNLV, 34 vs Utah State, 33 vs Air Force, 34 vs Colorado State, 34 vs Wyoming, 38 vs Mississippi State, 72 vs Hawaii, and then 28 vs Louisville. Good thing we had an offense who was averaging nearly 50 per game. We still hung 45 on Hawaii with our backup QB playing.
Those were just completely different times. There’s no way a team with such a weak schedule would have made a top 10 rank today. Hawaii clearly, was the better team that year.
@Aiwohi4life yeah bro he was getting looks at by the New york JETS during the playoffs but I believe Chad decided to stay in the CFL for a while longer because of the NFL Buyout thing an the lockout so he figured the CFL would be the safer deal but if the NFL has more stability guarantee your gonna here Chad owens name popping up on a NFL roster again.
it's like uh lives to beat byu lol amazing - just remember byu has their own rival utah. and remember all the times byu beat uh. and to keep you humble remember the sugar bowl where it was proof uh did not belong
Wow, what a salty mormon! Are you guys even allowed to have that much salt? BYU has a school in Hawaii, so you can think Utah is your rival, but Utah doesn't even care about BYU games.
@bizzleortizzle No, not the biggest, just the fact that they ran all over b-y-black and blue! No need to be so bitter, it was only one game, too, bad it ruined their undefeated season, LOL! And is going independent a way to avoid playing Boise St.? Every team has their bad games, so lighten up! And every team has their key injuries, so stop making excuses!
This game is in my top 5 favorite games of all time... the celebration penalties.... cheerleaders fighting.... Lelie torching BYU... pure awesomeness

Go warriors 2016!!!
The stadium needs to be rocking like this again!!! Go Warriors!
I not only predicted Hawaii's victory back then but I remember thinking "It's about time BYU finally plays somebody that is actually good!"
Sebastian Barcelone Good for you.
Which teams they scheduled weren't especially very good?
Rolovich WILL turn around this football program.
Good call, too bad he’s at wazzu now.

I remember this game well. While I was standing in line getting concessions and I missed a 3 touchdowns. 2 by Chad Owens and a BYU score.
We NEED to bring back these ALL BLACK jerseys.

Who’s here after the win over BYU Hawaii Bowl Game 2019
The head Coach of Hawaii is the Quarterback of this game lol
Coach Rolovich hahaha nice
Yep, Rollo can now lay claim to not only beating BYU as a player but also as a coach. Not too shabby.
Remember when Stutzman kicked the ball into the stands?
this will always be the most memorable game to me!!!
this was one of the greatest games i ever watched.
Chad Owens was a beast......NEVER FORGET HIM
Yup i was there myself, I was 13 at the time with my football team, good memories!
Chee, I was at this game. Was nuts
I was at this games. Went to the concession stand for snacks and missed three touchdowns
I REMEMBER THIS GAME!!! I was only 8 but i sat up in the yellow. The stadium was ROCKING while shouting BY-WHO!??

Let's not forget the year detmer won the heisman, then promptly went out, played Hawaii, and LOST. BWAHAHAHAHAHA!
Detmer didn't Just lose....He Got Embarassed....by Jeff Sydner/Dane McArthur/Michael Carter
ESPN took the game off at halftime. I was salty they did that.
Welcome back Rolo!

B-Y- Black and blue! LOL!! Awesome game, still remember Stutzman kicking the ball into the stands!

How tf were they ranled 8th????
Future CFL star Chad Owens
BYU was #8 and relegated to the Liberty Bowl regardless of this game's result
WHAT A GREAT GAME!
@ 7:32 Even a school teacher scored for Hawaii
Sweet! Amazing game! Go Warriors!
@Aiwohi4life he's the best returner in the CFL. I believe he broke a record an was getting looks from the NFL after the CFL season he had.
If Colt Brennan and Ashley Lelie played together...
Whaaa? Davone Bess was better
@@reedallidap7173 then Ashley? Nah

And they still sucked with the backup QB, LOL.
Go Cougs! the real Cougs, WAZZU

@Kamakazi242012 It's was because he WAS a beast. Never heard from him in a long time, heard he's in CFL now. Not as much as A beast though.
WAR-IORS! strap up for War boys
@bizzleortizzle u mad? And I didn't know Luke Staley played defense!
