I actually do have that in my list of videos to make!! I just need to find the time unfortunately. A lot goes into making a video so it's not always a simple process! But I'm glad to see that people are interested in this so I should bump it up the list!! Besides Q&A and Lists, what else would you like to see?
If I remember correctly it's from level 4 and above. At level 4, you will get a virtual badge to display next to your profile name. Other than that, it comes down to luck and which countries the Google team are running their free gifts

The Guiding Star award is not given based on points since those that have received this award are at different levels! I was a Level 8 Local Guide when I first received this award! Hope that helps!

I think so many on here are missing the point of being a local guide. It's not "How many points until I get a gift!?" or " I'm a higher level and never got anything!" When we became local guides, those of us on this video right now, we didn't join and start contributing because of a "Prize" right? I started out because I'm a huge Google fan and I like trying out all their products/services. And I also love taking photos and love exploring my local area for nice cafes to try out! So when the Local Guides program came along, it was a natural fit. Then, the passionate community inspired me to do more than just write reviews, take photos etc... which is how I started the Go Loco Podcast with other Local Guides to try and bring some further fun and activities for the community to take part in! And perhaps, inspire others to start their own projects that are aligned to the community goals. 💖

Not sure if I understood your question properly but when they told me about the good news, it took a few weeks for them to send me the gift box! So it wasn't long. Guiding Stars is an award (I guess) that the Local Guides team started last year and they picked 50 Local Guides to win the award. It's not something that Local Guides can directly work towards or apply for. You just need to contribute actively to the program as well as stand out with your contributions so that hopefully you will get noticed and selected by Google. I hope that answers your question but if I misunderstood it, feel free to explain to me what you were asking for! Thanks! 👍
If spending your time working for nothing is your thing, then kudos for you. I reached a level 4 before I realized if I wasn't doing this for free, Google would have to pay people like me to do it. I feel played.
If Google provided some form of monetisation to User Generated Content on Google Maps, I definitely won't complain 😅 but at the same time I enjoy what I do and I don't feel it's a burden. Most platforms (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, TripAdvisor etc) rely on free content from users too. Every post you make generates interaction which they can use to show adverts. Some provide better rewards perhaps or allow for self advertising (e.g. being an influencer and hyping up a paid promo). With Maps, it may be a little bit more difficult because I wouldn't want people writing reviews because they are paid to do so by Google or businesses as it would make me rather circumspect if the reviews are genuine or not. As it is, we already have a lot of spammy contributions just because people want to level up really quickly to Level 10, thinking that will give them extra kudos or something. Anyway, yours is a valid view point that I've heard many times before and I don't have a solution. The easiest is, 'to each their own' 😁

Judging from comments that I've seen, there's been a bit of confusion that the invite was either: a) they've been selected as a Guiding Star b) they've been invited to be part of the announcement Unfortunately, the online event (TH-cam Premiere) was an opportunity to watch the Guiding Star 2021 announcement with other Local Guides. That was what the invite is for. So, it's a passive attendance. Here's a quick tip: there are 150M Local Guides around the world. It is going to be challenging for Google to notice and recognise outstanding individuals on that global scale. One helpful way is to be active in the forum (www.localguidesconnect.com) because Google Moderators are ever present there so it's easier for them to spot your contributions.
Erm.. it's not about the points. There are only 50 Guiding Stars and we all vary from Level 7 to 10, if I'm not mistaken. If it was about the points, then all Guiding Stars should be the top 50 Level 10 members. It's about the quality of your contributions and whether you've gone above and beyond to help others.
I have been a Google local guide in the area in which I live for about a year-and-a-half it tells me that there are things available points and the levels I don't understand any of it I just recently got an email stating I was one of the highest reviewed pictures on Google 3.4 million views on one picture not sure how to understand what is going on here
Have you been to maps.google.com/localguides to read about the program, what it's all about, and how you can help contribute to your local neighbourhood whilst picking up points and levelling up? The points is just to put some fun in the process and to provide a concept of progress and to show how much you've done. But the official site should have all the info you need to answer your questions! Of course, if you're still puzzled by it all, feel free to ask your questions here too
got mail from local guide that you have unlocked a reward but there is no code to redeem the reward and the deadline to redeem the reward is Feb 28 2022 ,What should I do now and I mailed them also??
I'm not sure about this one unfortunately. Some of the rewards are region specific so I have not seen the email on this. I do recall reading in the Local Guides Connect (online forum) that a while back, there was an error in the email from the Local Guides team and that it was lacking a link/code (similar to what you've mentioned). Not sure what the outcome to that was but I'd imagine that a new email was sent out.

I've been so busy that I decided to take a day off yesterday just to make sure that I was ready for the announcement! So, this is the second year that Google is hosting the Guiding Stars award. Hopefully it is something that they will maintain in coming years. In a way, my personal understanding of it (and I have no insight into the official discussions) is that Guiding Stars have been organised because the annual Connect Live event can't take place because of Covid. If you've not heard of Connect Live, definitely do search for that on TH-cam! It is the most amazing summit a Local Guide could attend! I'm not sure where your #80 comes from but in any case, the Guiding Star announcement is a passive event where we can only watch. So all Local Guides have been invited to watch the reveal of the Guiding Stars announcement together. By the way, did you enjoy the announcement?!

The physical gifts are extras and not guaranteed for all Local Guides. Please check out the official page (maps.google.com/localguides). Your first gift comes at Level 4 when you get a level badge next to your name in Google Maps. As you level up, you will get some more perks e.g. having early access to new features (I believe that this is also not guaranteed for everyone since the early access is usually by region and may be limited in quantities). And you may also get some regional perks depending on what Google has arranged with local businesses e.g. Indonesian Local Guides had a discount code to use with a local hotel chain, North American Local Guides received a discount for subscription to New York Times etc). I've heard of physical gifts given to some Local Guides but this is all determined by Google and, in my opinion, to be treated as extras since they are not part of the benefits scheme. Again, the official page does not mention any physical gifts. Bottom line is to not expect to get physical gifts so as to not feel disappointed. Many long time Local Guides are still active not because of the points or gifts but because they enjoy contributing and sharing their local knowledge for the global audience. Hope that helps 😊

I'm pretty sure that the Fjällräven backpack is worth more than $8 😅. But I would like to stress that I don't do this for the money (especially since I'm not making any 🤣). I enjoy exploring and travelling and if I can spend a few minutes here and there sharing it via Google Maps (or TH-cam), where I believe it can help others, then I'm happy with that. Don't forget that Google Maps is free to use. Folks like the Local Guides community contribute their local experience and knowledge to Maps which in turn help other users to benefit. I, for one, use Maps a lot to figure out where to go, what to visit, find opening times etc. Of course it would be nice to get a reward or something for the time and effort put in but then I feel like it will open a can of worms because some people may review for the sake of getting paid rather than sharing a genuine experience.
