This movie was lovely but it just doesn’t compare to the book. However their choices of casting is most exceptional. The contrast of beauty between Amber and Corinna is perfect! They’re both lovely but in different ways-just as Bruce described. They captured the gorgeous, sultry nature of Amber and the breathtaking innocence of Corinna.
It definitely is, obviously because of the times they had to omit a lot from this movie. It seems like they really skip a lot. I'd like to see the book as a mini series now days.
As beautiful as it serms, I'm so grateful to have lived in that era. Its definitely rich vs poverty 😢. What's interesting, is now IF one wishes, one can dress in those beautiful gowns, even the very simple looking one's are lovely. IF I was younger, I would rather afford a lovely long dress home style dress vs the horrid see through leggings that do not hide the curdled tushes & thighs, tight blouses that emphasize mega rolls & very few wear lovely modest yet very attractive simple daily 👗, skirts, blouses, Bermuda shorts, capri's & any such like. I so pray those of you young ladies & even seasoned ladies in years, find or have the above dresses to wear out n about or at home for comfort, nostalgia & bc it will bring that feminine loveliness so many of us women may have tucked away bc of life's current woe's & whatever else. IF this doesn't apply to some of you lovely ladies, wonderful, however for those it may apply, please forgive for any offense. Paz be with us all 🙏. "Isa"

Imagine my surprise to find this movie right now. I loved the book so much that I named my first daughter Amber. She has three sisters, but none were named after a book character.
I remember falling a little bit in love with Captain Morgan when I first read the book (I was 16). He was in love with her in a way Bruce never would be. I was so angry with how Amber treated him. Wow, I’m close to 70 years old, and I still remember how I felt ! 😅😅 I was not a fan of Bruce’s. He treated her as badly as she treated Rex.
What a terribly sad ending...the little boy seemed to be very lonely, with no real friends it was probably for the best he went with his Father. She was so caught up in superficiality & deception she had forgotten about the feelings of others. This was a wonderful film very engrossing and interesting.i love all the actors but Linda Darnell shines like a rare diamond!! Thank yo so much for posting it🇦🇽💥😊
It’s weird how Hollywood could take such an over the top book and turn it into a more typical romance film. From those who are interested, Amber was 16 in the book, she had around 30 lovers, she got pregnant almost 40 times and had 7 abortions, and a whole bunch of other stuff happened that the censors couldn’t show. The book also didn’t end shaming Amber so thoroughly for her social climbing, pointing out that Bruce was also a social climber but because he was a man no one took issue with it.
I was about 15 years old when I read Forever Amber. I bought it at a library sale. The librarian said, "That's a pretty racy book. Are you sure your parents will want you to read it?" I responded with, when they see how many pages there are, they'll be happy that I'm no longer reading Nancy Drew books.
This is one of the best books..I just wish someone would make a proper movie of it...it has so much potential for the big screen ...So much better than gone with the wind ......
Note: Author Kathleen Winsor obviously used GWTW as a model for her novel. Many of the incidents are obvious GWTW imitations: Amber marries a rich older man she does not love, she escapes from a burning city, she falls in love with a seafaring semi-pirate whom she loses in the end, and she marries three times.
One of those books whose world you can get lost in. The heroine survives many trials and shapes her destiny through the sheer force of her character, her wit, and resolve. Moll Flanders, Becky Sharp, Emma Bovary are kindred spirits. Anya Seton:s Katherine is one, too.
The first draft ran to over 1,800 pages, and was titled WINGS OF THE MORNING. It was thoroughly censored and edited. Author Winsor did 6 drafts before she was satisfied. Even then the book had to be cut. Someone in the publisher's office changed the title. Kathleen Winsor herself had a fascinating life. Linda Darnell died tragically in a fire.
This is my 2nd favourite book, although this movie does not do it justice in any way, shape or form. If you want to know the REAL (SURPRISING) ending - read the book.

I read this book when I was about 20. Im 51 now or 52 I never can remember. It was my mums favourite book! I’ve read it a couple of times and it’s still the best book I’ve ever read! I wish they would to an updated film. Although this film is pleasant enough - it’s not nearly as good as the book! I really can’t emphasis enough just how good a read it is. If any of you have not read it, it is a must! Bruce was portrayed as THE most handsome man there is! Bruce in the film just doesn’t do it for me! Go get the book people......👍
I was very touched by this movie, and as a hopeless romantic, I was hoping for a happy end. It's rediculous, I know, but I'm quite a bit upset now having watched it all the way through. - Oh well, I'm going to have a long hot bath to restore my inner balance :-) Thank you, for uploading!
This has to be one of the best 1940s films I've ever seen! Wonderful! It's far more nuanced than films of that film usually are: who are the villains? Who are the baddies? There is a lot of morality, immorality and amorality and it isn't always clear whose side we're supposed to be on - that is left up to the individual viewer. And the acting is great! The only times we're reminded it's a 1940s film were when Mither Rod Cup ond thi Narse appured weth thir rother extrudinory yccints! But they were part of the joy of it, too!
I remember sneaking the book from the top shelf in my mother's library, a shelf strictly forbidden to me. I was only 9 but already reading/inferring well beyond my years. Now that I'm in my "beyond" years, I can still remember the effect the book had on me even then. Now let me watch the movie....and compare.
I came across this movie from a mention in comments of another movie "Summer Storm". With Linda Darnell and George Sanders. She played many characters of a woman struggling to get out of poverty. I notice in these two movies it was always something dealing with fire lighting, strange she died by fire in real life. 🔥
Just finished the book again, had to rewatch the movie! Agree with former comments, definitely needs to be remade into a movie-series of some type to really get all of the plot! Still, acting and costumes are amazing! Well done
For any young people that are seeing this for the first time, please note that this story was banned when I was a boy and the film version was strictly adults only. The book was condemned by the catholic church, the reasons given were "Indecency and 70 references to sexual intercourse, 39 illegitimate pregnancies, 7 abortions, and 10 descriptions of women undressing in front of men". Yet it was a best seller and this greatly watered down film was made with massive omissions. Today this would make an excellent mini series and all the censored portions of the original story could be included. It awaits a more enlightened audience.
This is one book I will NEVER lend out, just in case it doesn't come back. I love to re-read it now and then. Pity the movie bears little resemblance to the book --- but then it was made over half a century ago so only to be expected.

Amber and bruce were exactly alike...that was the problem. It meant they were both selfish, proud, and ambitious people. Bruce was the only one who knew it would never work between them and that he needed someone in his life that would balance him out. I wish Amber had realized that. She didn't realize that she was chasing something she would never catch. The movie's ok, but the book is a million times better. 100% would recommend.
Oh my gosh, I can't believe I found this film here on You Tube! Although Winsor's classic novel is more in-depth, as books are compared to most screenplay versions, this film remains a treasure for all Linda Darnell and Cornel Wilde fans.

The Great Fire sequence and Darnell's expression is all the more chilling since fire would take her life As I write this there were two other films where fire played an important part to the plot of her films: HANGOVER SQUARE and ANNA AND THE KING OF SIAM Beautiful actress and a beautiful person she died because she tried to rescue someone else from the blaze that claimed her Fate could have been a little kinder to Linda Darnell....

One of my favourite George Sanders roles, and one of the best portrayals of King Charles III, in my opinion. He shows the loneliness and isolation of a person in that position, and the sadness when the "fragile device" is shattered.
Bruce was a noble snob, and refused to marry her because she was a tramp, and low-born, so he thought. Amber was unscrupulous and promiscuous, but the film sanitized her. The original novel had to be censored before it could be published.

Hilary C She was watching "Stardust" when she left her cigarette burning. Unfortunately, Linda was alive when she was found at the base of the stairs. She later died at the hospital. Only 41 years old. What a talent, a beauty and a wonderful human being.
i really dislike that Bruce guy. He snubs Amber over and over despite all her devotion to him. In her solitude she makes the only choices available to a woman at the time.And after acting like a complete cad,He dares come in on his high horse like He's the moral one...really don't like that guy.

Oh Thankyou for presenting this movie, it's been quite a long time since I've seen it. Now that I think about it , I remember many years ago I watched a somewhat similar movie , one scene in particular was gentlemen on horses following the lead of dogs hunting down a fox, in the movie I remember a young lady holding the fox being hunted in her arms when suddenly the dogs caught up to her but the thing was she was standing by a well that was apparently very old, so old that when the dogs finally jumped upon her not only did she fall down the well while still holding on to the fox but a couple of the hunting dogs fell down the well to. That left such an impression on me. I was about ten years old. That was a good movie to, I just don't remember the name. If someone recalls the scene I just described and knows the name of the movie please put it in the comments or replies. It is a very old movie. Thanks

I remember my best friend and I both reading, and discussing, this book when young (passed down to us by my mother) late 1980's, an older guy I chased around for years was "my Lord Carlton" etc. 😂 It made quite an impression on us!
the original story by Kathleen Winsor is so sanitized by this 1947 Hollywood version (albeit a beautiful Linda Darnell does her best to bring Ambers character to life!) that a remake today would be able to give the story justice that this book deserves!!! I am surprised that I have never come across any hint of this ever being considered and don't understand why what with all the remakes of Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights etc...... a mini series would be a must to cover all the different plots that appear throughout the story and to connect the beginning (Ambers meeting of Bruce at the age of 16 in the village where she grew up ) and all her misadventures and escapades living under Charles II Restoration England to the ending (Amber going after Bruce on a merchant ship to America after being lied to that his wife had just died) what a amazing romance and a dramatic period in Englands history.
Quite a long movie; I know the book was a big success and big book and Windsor married the much married Artie Shaw. And yes siree, Linda Darnell was one of the most beautiful actresses ever. And good, too. Letter to Three Wives and Fallen Angel are all the better because of her.
I agree with you there...it would make a fantastic mini series...all of the Jane Austin and Bronte sisters novels have had way too many remakes...Forever Amber would appear fresh to those that never read the book or seen this movie
I could not agree more Jamie Curles --- this is one of the books I would take with me on a Desert Island (if I had to choose 3 books) - my first would be "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexandre Dumas, "Forever Amber" would be the second --- and I have yet to decide on a third.

The book is incredible! This movie is completely different. Hollywood rewrote it.
Fox had to censor and distort the script because of 1947 Production Code restrictions.

I have always loved this movie ever since I saw it years ago when I was in High school. I love the fashion and décor during that timeframe.

I loved the book. I still have a copy (Part 1 and Part 2) books, dating from the 1940’s. Amber was such a strong character.

This has to be one of the best 1940s films I've ever seen! Wonderful! It's far more nuanced than films of that film usually are: who are the villains? Who are the baddies? There is a lot of morality, immorality and amorality and it isn't always clear whose side we're supposed to be on - that is left up to the individual viewer. And the acting is great! The only times we're reminded it's a 1940s film were when Mither Rod Cup ond thi Narse appured weth thir rother extrudinory yccints! But they were part of the joy of it, too!
I remember sneaking the book from the top shelf in my mother's library, a shelf strictly forbidden to me. I was only 9 but already reading/inferring well beyond my years. Now that I'm in my "beyond" years, I can still remember the effect the book had on me even then. Now let me watch the movie....and compare.
I came across this movie from a mention in comments of another movie "Summer Storm". With Linda Darnell and George Sanders. She played many characters of a woman struggling to get out of poverty. I notice in these two movies it was always something dealing with fire lighting, strange she died by fire in real life. 🔥
Just finished the book again, had to rewatch the movie! Agree with former comments, definitely needs to be remade into a movie-series of some type to really get all of the plot! Still, acting and costumes are amazing! Well done
For any young people that are seeing this for the first time, please note that this story was banned when I was a boy and the film version was strictly adults only.
The book was condemned by the catholic church, the reasons given were "Indecency and 70 references to sexual intercourse, 39 illegitimate pregnancies, 7 abortions, and 10 descriptions of women undressing in front of men".
Yet it was a best seller and this greatly watered down film was made with massive omissions.
Today this would make an excellent mini series and all the censored portions of the original story could be included.
It awaits a more enlightened audience.

This is one book I will NEVER lend out, just in case it doesn't come back. I love to re-read it now and then. Pity the movie bears little resemblance to the book --- but then it was made over half a century ago so only to be expected.

Amber and bruce were exactly alike...that was the problem. It meant they were both selfish, proud, and ambitious people. Bruce was the only one who knew it would never work between them and that he needed someone in his life that would balance him out. I wish Amber had realized that. She didn't realize that she was chasing something she would never catch. The movie's ok, but the book is a million times better. 100% would recommend.

Oh my gosh, I can't believe I found this film here on You Tube! Although Winsor's classic novel is more in-depth, as books are compared to most screenplay versions, this film remains a treasure for all Linda Darnell and Cornel Wilde fans.

The Great Fire sequence and Darnell's expression is all the more chilling since fire would take her life As I write this there were two other films where fire played an important part to the plot of her films: HANGOVER SQUARE and ANNA AND THE KING OF SIAM Beautiful actress and a beautiful person she died because she tried to rescue someone else from the blaze that claimed her Fate could have been a little kinder to Linda Darnell....

One of my favourite George Sanders roles, and one of the best portrayals of King Charles III, in my opinion. He shows the loneliness and isolation of a person in that position, and the sadness when the "fragile device" is shattered.

Bruce was a noble snob, and refused to marry her because she was a tramp, and low-born, so he thought. Amber was unscrupulous and promiscuous, but the film sanitized her. The original novel had to be censored before it could be published.

Actually the book describes Amber as having, “Honeyed curls” so she most likely has dark blonde hair.
Plus, Amber was named for her rare amber-colored eyes.

I always feel sad when I remember the terrible fate of Linda Darnel. She was so incredibly beautiful.
I read that she never wanted to be in that business at all, but that her mother pushed her into it every step of the way. So alcoholism, falling asleep smoking..horrible death.

i really dislike that Bruce guy. He snubs Amber over and over despite all her devotion to him. In her solitude she makes the only choices available to a woman at the time.And after acting like a complete cad,He dares come in on his high horse like He's the moral one...really don't like that guy.
We need either a mini-series or a remake of this!!!

Oh Thankyou for presenting this movie, it's been quite a long time since I've seen it. Now that I think about it , I remember many years ago I watched a somewhat similar movie , one scene in particular was gentlemen on horses following the lead of dogs hunting down a fox, in the movie I remember a young lady holding the fox being hunted in her arms when suddenly the dogs caught up to her but the thing was she was standing by a well that was apparently very old, so old that when the dogs finally jumped upon her not only did she fall down the well while still holding on to the fox but a couple of the hunting dogs fell down the well to. That left such an impression on me. I was about ten years old. That was a good movie to, I just don't remember the name. If someone recalls the scene I just described and knows the name of the movie please put it in the comments or replies. It is a very old movie. Thanks

The Hollywood offering of Kathleen Winsor's great book. Colourful movie. Watch and relax but don't get too excited. Could not watch it more than once every ten years or so!
The lead men so sexy. Haircuts mustaches etc. The clothing so swaggering/elegant. Makes today's men look effete and boring. Love the restoration look. Could be a new/old trend-

I remember my best friend and I both reading, and discussing, this book when young (passed down to us by my mother) late 1980's, an older guy I chased around for years was "my Lord Carlton" etc. 😂 It made quite an impression on us!

the original story by Kathleen Winsor is so sanitized by this 1947 Hollywood version (albeit a beautiful Linda Darnell does her best to bring Ambers character to life!) that a remake today would be able to give the story justice that this book deserves!!! I am surprised that I have never come across any hint of this ever being considered and don't understand why what with all the remakes of Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights etc...... a mini series would be a must to cover all the different plots that appear throughout the story and to connect the beginning (Ambers meeting of Bruce at the age of 16 in the village where she grew up ) and all her misadventures and escapades living under Charles II Restoration England to the ending (Amber going after Bruce on a merchant ship to America after being lied to that his wife had just died) what a amazing romance and a dramatic period in Englands history.
Quite a long movie; I know the book was a big success and big book and Windsor married the much married Artie Shaw. And yes siree, Linda Darnell was one of the most beautiful actresses ever. And good, too. Letter to Three Wives and Fallen Angel are all the better because of her.
I agree with you there...it would make a fantastic mini series...all of the Jane Austin and Bronte sisters novels have had way too many remakes...Forever Amber would appear fresh to those that never read the book or seen this movie
I could not agree more Jamie Curles --- this is one of the books I would take with me on a Desert Island (if I had to choose 3 books) - my first would be "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexandre Dumas, "Forever Amber" would be the second --- and I have yet to decide on a third.

Amber was a stalker. Bruce made his feelings clear from day 1 but she kept on pushing the issue. She got what she deserved.

Linda Darnell, She was married and divorced three times: to cinematographer J. Peverell Marley from 1944-1952, to Phillip Liebmann (a New York brewer) from 1954-1955 and to Merle Roy Robertson (an airline pilot) from 1957-1962. On April 10, 1965, Linda died from burns she received in a fire at the house of her former secretary. Ironically, she had been watching Star Dust (1940) on television, which was one of the films that set her career in motion, when the house caught fire. She had appeared in a total of 46 films. Often described as the "girl with the perfect face", Linda Darnell died at the age of 41.
