Great video! Glad I found it. To answer your question about why healing is in the water group. My understanding is that this would most likely be used to “jump ponds” that may be holding waterfowl. In eastern Oregon we do this as there are a lot of small ponds you wouldn’t sit on all morning. Instead you’d walk pond to pond and bust them up but if you’re dogs out 200yds and beats you to the punch those ducks won’t hold.
A lot of good work here. I'm sorry to hear about the no prize on steadiness. I have been training for UT, and it looked like your dog learned the pigeon-on-a-string game really fast. I noticed he started flagging on point, which indicates that something's off. And yes, watching a pigeon glide down to the grass gently is different than seeing one shot in the air. Every scenario I have used in the field to try to conserve and re-use birds has ended up creating different problems I had to fix later. Best of luck with a great dog!

Thank you Doug I have been training dogs for a long time now and was looking for a different type of dog was looking at the podelpointer and came across you. How you broke this down into sections is very helpful. The eas In training that dog is a credit to you ser .it's going to be next to Impossible to get a podelpointer over yere in Britain I a from Wales in Britain. I don't give up esaly I was looking at a nother tipe of pointer. I am a keen wildfowler and believe the podelpointer is better suited so yere starts my hunt for one meny thanks Doug
he follows that scent that fast because he is scenting a combination of you and the bird. having wait times or someone else with rubber boots may challenge him a bit more.
My experience with my dog was I could throw bumpers all day and he wouldn't break and fetch til voice or whistle command. But a flushed or launched bird was another thing. It took quite a few sessions to get him to stay steady to wing and shot with a live bird. You can never use enough live birds, but getting them can sometimes be tough and expensive.
I totally agree. I've also learned there is a big difference between launching a bird and watching it fly away vs actually shooting the bird and watching it fold.
Thank you for a really comprehensive video on everything that UT covers. I'm curious with your dog and his retrieves, he has a nice clean delivery. Did you do hold conditioning? Force fetch?
I used a combination of negative reinforcement with positive praise and used the following TH-cam video for my inspiration... th-cam.com/video/Emf2rSAdRpc/w-d-xo.html Basically I would get him in the habit of holding the bumper in his mouth with the "Hold" command and train him to only release with the "Out" command even if I tried pulling the bumper. If he dropped it prematurely before a good hand-delivery, I used a constant yet light stimulation on the e-collar until he picked it back up.

@@patrickwalsh5384 Not yet. It depends on a couple factors I guess. They haven't scheduled the Fall test yet. I depends if it's scheduled over the archery hunt opener and if somebody in the family draws a tag. I would like to run through the test again though.
